Official Northeast Beckerhead Spring Gathering. PICS ADDED.

Had a great time. MANY thanks to trailbum for setting this up and to Ka-Bar and Ethan for....well, everything.

Arrival, Becker standing guard:

JWL arrived with his secret rub grill was set up and the loin dressed and put over the coals. I don't know why JWL thought it would escape, but....

17351864510_de1f4214ff_b.jpg

Dinner was late, but oh SO worth the wait. Got to know JWL and pass the mead that he'd brought. Never have I drunk from a horn before....he assured us that is the tradition, so.....

And then it was done! Masterful job by JWL.

No one was complaining....and don't let these two fool you...it wasn't really that cold out.

TheMadIndian and his clan arrived a little late for the festivities, but there were leftovers to be had for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday morning arrives at Radeke, and that means....BACON! Trailbum winding it up:

Jim Bensinger showed up with some bagels, and though I didn't get a photo of it, my newly edged Brute actually sliced a bagel.....I kid you not. It's now a fully functional cutting implement instead of a knife shaped bludgeon.

Bacon done, time for the kielbasa so trailbum could make his "hot mess" for breakfast.

Amanda about to drop a big log.....

....and we (I) was too busy eating trailbum's hot mess to get any pictures ;). Maybe later in the thread.....

I'm still working, but a quick word.

Thank you Ethan and Kabar for the prizes and the forum. Without you none of us would have met.
Thank you to everyone who showed up and made it such a fun weekend.
A special thanks to Dresnor, Copperhead88, and GSOM for helping to get this thing setup.
If my count was right we had 17 people there on Saturday. Not bad for a Yankee gathering.
I will do a real write up with pics later this week.
I'm going to bed, I'm beat.

OK, time for some more pics, though it turns out I was having too much fun to take many.....

Saturday morning after TheMadIndian clan showed me some of their knot handiwork, I got dad and daughter working on their own lanyards. Button knots and lanyard (diamond) knots for the win. They both did a great job:

17351977600_9ff242075c_b.jpg

Then, all sorts of fun happened where I took no pictures at all. Someone else has or will fill in here (but in their own post) and TheMadIndian already has posted some great shots. I did have to get a pic of the fire starting activity:
Jim B. and Trailbum sporting this year's hottest (and I do mean hottest) new trail fashion:

And then....I forgot my camera was in my pocket, or I was helping folks with the air rifle, or.....I was generally just goofing off. Was sitting up late with Bladite chatting and we kept hearing noises in the leaf litter, so we went to explore....

Inside the cabin there is a serious rodent problem:

But still, it's cozy:

My favorite shirt of the weekend was Dresnor's:

16917182594_243fda022e_b.jpg

Sunday morning, and another fire....I don't know why we had one; it was an unseasonably warm 80° and the temp was going up. Amanda has a thing for fire, I think. She made sure we didn't freeze either night by keeping the woodstove in the cabin going. Of course, she also made sure I woke up sweating as well ;).

Dog day:

And then it was time to clean up and say goodbye. Until next time....thanks to everyone who came and made this the coolest real life internet forum on the planet. It's hard to express how the Beckerheads have changed my life, and become part of my family of choice. And thank you, Ethan, for creating the digital house that has brought us together in the great outdoors.

awesome!!!
Moar Pix!!

and OMG, did Ka-Bar raise the grind on the BK-7?!?!?:

What an awesome weekend! Getting together with the northeast crew is always a good time. Mix in some great weather, great food, and even more great company and you have a recipe for an unforgettable weekend.

I will try to re cap this as best as I can. I should have taken more pictures but with everything going on it was impossible to capture it all.

We had three new forum members attend this gathering. TheMadIndian, JWL, and J W Bensinger. All three of them were not shy about helping out and giving advice in their own way. They jumped in and helped out when needed and provided comic relief when necessary. It is great to see time and time again how personalities translate to real people vs a persona online. Time and time again we are able to shake hands and make friends with a real, like minded person. I have yet to meet someone from this forum that I have not trusted. I hope that tradition continues. TheMadIndian even brought his two kids to add to the family friendly event. I hope they had a great time (and were not too cold at night) and I hope all of you can make it to the fall gathering.

Our weekend started my leaving early Friday and taking it easy on the way down. I really hate driving and don't like being rushed so we planned a few stops to stretch our legs. We got to the cabin first and checked everything over and made sure it was presentable for the other guests. After that we hung out an waiting for people to arrive. I was more tired than I thought and quickly passed out on the couch. Becker followed suit.

17565342735_980d42b527_z.jpg

Trailbum, GSOM, and JWL showed up and we started in making supper. GSOM and JWL put their brains and their talents together to make and awesome pork loin. The crew were speechless until our bellies were full.

Getting the charcoal ready.

While we were waiting for the pork loin to be ready JWL broke out the mead and toasted us all. He shared his mead in the traditional way. Around the campfire drinking it out of a horn. I don't drink much but I couldn't pass up drinking from a horn!

Operation lightweight is underway. We were all in good spirits after the horn made it around a few times.

TheMadIndian and his family rolled in around midnight. His travels were slowed by a previous obligation. They all looked really tired from the 6 hour drive so we helped them unpack their truck and showed them were the beds were.

The next morning we hung out around the campfire trying to figure out who was or was not snoring all night.

After breakfast I was able to shoot the first of two pellet guns that I was lucky enough to shoot over the course of the weekend. I didn't get any pictures of the second, but here is the first. A very handy and packable Crossman Backpacker.

Throughout the day, J W Bensinger, Bladite, and the rest of trailbum's family showed up (minus the youngest who was on a class trip) and brought Bjames and Alwaysoutdoors. Epointer and his wife made an appearance as well. It was good to see him again.

Alwaysoutdoors has been working on some knife handles for some blade blanks. based on these results I think he needs to work his own steel and make some one of a kind originals.

Damn!

J W Bensinger and Bladite did a show and tell. I missed opportunities to take pictures of many awesome blades. Here are a few.

After the show and tell we all got to shoot GSOM's Pellet gun and had a slingshot competition. Both were really fun and it was great to see the kids get in on the action. I didn't get any pictures of the pellet gun shooting but it was popular and a lot of fun. Thanks GSOM!

Here are some pictures of the slingshot competition in no particular order.

After the slingshot competition we did a fire challenge. The challenge was to make a fire with a fresnel lens that you could walk away from. Each person was given a lens, a birds nest made of jute twine and either chaga, char cloth, or both. Each person had to go to the surrounding woods and gather enough additional tinder and sticks to make a small fire. With the area being dry, fire safety was a concern so we only made the fires on the bare dirt and had plenty of 5 gallon buckets full of water handy to put out any potential stray fires.

I am very proud to say that everyone who took the challenge completed it. Even with the sun not helping at times by hiding behind the clouds just enough to cause frustration, everyone got this challenge done. There was also good teamwork after someone got a fire going they helped and instructed others until everyone was successful.

Before the challenge started there was some hilarity when three of our hair challenged individuals made a bush toupee. I might have a new avatar with one of these photos. LOL

After the fire challenge, J W Bensinger helped put an endge on a kukri that belonged to TheMadIndian's son. It took some effort but he got it done. Just another act of kindness at a Beckerhead gathering.

17565567605_9342cdac13_z.jpg

After all the excitement some people said their goodbyes and the rest hung out around the fire. Great conversation, more great food, and most of all, peace and quiet.

The next morning we had breakfast and some people packed up their stuff. In the meantime Bladite and I went for a walk to the nearby river.

We geeked out over different plants and mushrooms and took in more of what nature had to offer.

It was another great weekend with old friends and new ones as well. All I have to say is, if you have the chance to attend a gathering please do. It does not matter where in the world it is, the Beckerhead gatherings are worth it every time. These gatherings are full of great people and they are always a great time.

A big thank you to trailbum for setting this weekend up and making sure everyone has a great time. Also, a huge thank you to Ethan and Kabar for donating new steel for prizes.

Till next time everyone!

Jeremy

Three sizes, even. Mine's a 17".
They may have been seconds but there's nothin' wrong with the HT.
Limbed a whole maple that cane down this winter with my full-convexed 4. Like buddah.

What a great weekend.

Thankyou Ethan and Kabar for the wonderful prizes.

Friday night we started cooking the loin, well JWL and GSOM started cooking the loin.
The rest of us just looked on in wonder.

While the food was cooking we enjoyed the night and the fire, and some Mead.

Food is ready.

This is how you set down your Mead.
