I like the hammer poled hawks for outdoors use. In most cases a hatchet or a regular axe would be better. But there is something just cool about a hawk. Th Chogan is pretty darn heavy for a hawk. I just picked it up the other day at my favorite store. I think it is going to be a beast of a chopper and splitter. The RMJ Loggerhead is an awesome splitter for fire wood. It is a little light so if you are splitting something tough or big it may need some help. I take another log or a piece of split wood and pound the pole and just baton it through.
I do keep a Killian K2 tomahawk in my car at work, but we actually carry dedicated breaching kits. I bought the killian before he had benchmade making his stuff. Its an OK hawk. Very klunky and heavy. Its more of a dedicated breaching tool. The RMJ is outstanding. You can tell its designed to be light enough to carry on you person and weild as a weapon, heavy enough to be used to breach and its practically indestructible. They actually chop wood well, something the killian absolutely sucked at.
I have a good collection of hawks. I love them as much as I love knives. Here is my list...
RMJ Loggerhead Shrike
Fehrman Lagana VTAC
SOG Tactical Tomahawk
SOG Fasthawk
CRKT Woods Chogan
Cold Steel Trail Hawk
Cold Steel Spike Hawk.
Killian K2 Spike.
I had an emerson CQC-T, but that thing was actually scary. It was only a weapon to kill people and the handle didnt suit my liking. The thing was so sharp, blade and spike that I worried I was going to puncture myself playing with it. I sold it when I sold a bunch of Bark Rivers and switched to SK!
I really want to get another RMJ. I like his Kestrel and Kestrel Feather (a lighter weight version) .25 inch stock instead of 3/8. Or just a regular shrike with the spike. For the money, the SOGs are great. They chop wood very well. They are not as durable as some of the big money hawks but are easily replaced.
