Oh no...I've gone and done it.

As a matter of fact I do not! No doubt this is the only reason you have not been deluged with naked pictures of my girlfriend!

You know sometimes in these threads I am tempted to go into details but this is really not the place.

I will say this: Erin used to be a professional dominatrix and fetish model. And one thing I found in the whole scene of hot girls getting photographed in kinky gear for money...they are a pretty...affectionate bunch. So I can tell you that I have seen a lot of things that would curl a guy's hair.

Anyway back to this knife!

After giving it a lot of thought I have decided to take another crack at the heat treat next week. I am going to build a bigger firebox and try to get the heat more even throughout. That should make the whole thing a little better. I am also going to get a couple more gallons of oil so I can do a complete quench instead of an edge quench, just so I don't splash myself with flaming boiling oil again. Pics of the next attempt soon!

Mis- there is always the cove- I show you mine if you show me yours!! (women that is)

Can't wait to see your mycarta, maybe post pics of your mycarta setup when you are done

All right, another step in the process...I have just finished the third heat treat attempt, and this one went much better. I went and bought another cheap charcoal barbecue grill, this time a bigger one. I was going to just buy some sheet metal and make something, but then this one was on sale for so cheap it would have cost me twice as much to build something.

And when I finish screwing around with this I can barbecue on it.

Here's the only pic I managed to get:

But this time I immediately tested it with a file all over, and it is GOOD and HARD!!!

It's in the oven for tempering now. I am feeling pretty good about the heat treat at last!

So take heart, guys, soon it will be worth putting in the picture with a model!

Just FYI,

Fire_triangle.png

When I read about you grabbing the extinguisher, I knew what was next. I'm really glad to hear you weren't hurt! Next time you can just pick one of the 3 parts of that triangle and knock it out. A wet blanket over the top of the bucket should let the fire smother fairly quickly.

Back on topic, I am really digging this thread, so please keep us up to date!

P.S., the image is compliments of a google search, and it is not mine. If I need to take it down I will gladly!

LOL...you are right there, too!

I am used to working around heavy equipment and when it catches on fire, we just nail it with an extinguisher, or, if it's underground, we hit the halon system button.

So my habit is to blast stuff at close range but it's never liquid! So I never thought about blasting the oil everywhere, I just did what I do on the bulldozers or cranes or pettibones! Heh heh...woops.

Don't feel bad, part of being a FF is teaching fire prevention and use of extinguishers, so I had a leg up on ya. To be honest, I'm happy that you had the foresight to grab an extinguisher! :D

And to be even honester I am glad there's guys out there like you who are fire experts that can save the rest of us from ourselves!

Although you have to wonder about guys who seem comfortable running into burning buildings!

(Actually no you don't...they're just guys willing to put themselves at risk to save others and that's pretty damn awesome. Except it makes it harder for regular guys to look cool.)

LMAO I would never call myself an expert, I just read a few books and took a few tests, then they gave me a helmet and told me to go smash stuff :D

As for looking cool, I offset that by doing enough goofy things that it all evens out ;)

Though I do find myself shocked sometimes that they would pay me to do something I love so much!

But enough chatting out of me, we want to see the finished product (and some model shots! ) :p

Quick update here...I think the heat treat went well, so I have gone back to grinding.

What you see here is not an attempt at "tactical tigerstripe" but just me making sure that when I go to lap it on the glass block it is still good and flat, straight everywhere I want it to be straight, etc.

I also threw on a temporary cord handle just to make it comfortable to hold while I work on it. That will come off and there will be handle scales, but this will do for now.

The edge is still about o.o20" so I have a small ways to go yet. But I am starting to feel pretty good about this brute!

Misan,

This thread is a real page turner... I'm not sure if if I am more interested in the outcome of that great looking blade or seeing if Doc convinces you too open a new forum.... Having messed around a little with knifemaking, I think you may the touch. Looking forward to seeing how the blade performs..

Hey thanks very much!

You know I still have a pile of books and magazines from you which you so kindly sent me back when my leg was pointing the wrong direction...I need to get those back to you!

Also I need to get on another smaller knife to put some cherry handle slabs on from that cherry you sent.

I guess that's my next project!

E-mail you addie (mneedham51@hotmail.com), I'll send you some more "technical" manuals and my address for the books. I've actually got some small knife blanks laying around if you want to grip one, how do you like these little guys in 440C (Jantz Cutlery)?, there is a third, more traditional pattern around here too... Maybe a piggyback for the Fusion Battle Misanthropist your putting together....
