Oh Say Can You Snark...

Sand or crushed pinecones and a bit of water. Ash from the fire for a passable soap.

You have to be careful when using ash. Water poured through hardwood ash makes lye. While using ash as a "soap" substitute might not be terribly strong, it could have a caustic effect. Rough on hands, deteriorate some metals, or make you sick if ingested. Probably wouldn't happen, just an FYI. We always just used clean mud, and black moss. Pine cone would work ok too.

Back to our regularly scheduled snark

just got a new tablet/computer. I hate it already. Mostly my problems are with Windows 8 mostly (Oh how I miss the start button!!) and not necessarily the computer. My wife talked me into getting a HP Envy, despite her history with HP. I had briefly forgotten how HP totally sucks, and got it anyway. Stupid me!!

There are several small apps that put the start button back in. It's not perfect, or looks the same, but it works. I used one. Better than nothing. Still hate windows 8 though.

It took me a long time to get used to it, but im starting to accept windows 8.... Its never to late to accept Windows 8 :D

Just caught up on 9 pages of snark and you bastids didn't blow up a single thing. So disappointing...

Interesting, My HP is awesome. I got a nice performance based 19.5' HP laptop. I do agree with you about windows 8. It took me a solid 3 weeks to finally figure out all its quirks. I'm still learning a few of them. Just wait until you hit a key sequence and a different keyboard gets stuck on :(

I almost blew up my hot-tub last night :/ if that counts. It kept tripping the breakers, I ended up removing the panels and found a tiny water leak. Was able to fix it after all my family left.

Morning folks, just got off the phone with my mom, sounds like my dad had a small stroke yesterday. The local hospital sent him off by ambulance last nite to the closest town with a CT scan (about 4 hrs. away) to see if it's a clot or bleed.

Guess he woke up yesterday with numbness in his left side arm and leg. Too stubborn to go to the hospital though. Luckily my sister's down for a visit, so her and mom ganged up on him and finally convinced him to go later that afternoon. He later admitted that he knew he should have gone, but wanted to watch the World Cup game lol!! I told them that, with having German background, it's a perfectly acceptable excuse, and they should have stopped pestering him. They still don't get it though...

Anyways, by the sounds of it, he's doing ok all things considered - no vision loss, no droopines, no slurred speech. Just waiting on the results. Sounds like they're even sending him back home this afternoon. Man, this is the hardest part of getting old - watching your parents getting even older...:(

Just an FYI, but being an IT genius could have a caustic effect.

most IT geniuses I know are rather caustic.

I plan to purge Windows from our entire ship - at least everywhere I can. It's a horrible OS, confusing to navigate, makes complicated assumptions, AND these days basically doesn't work unless you have an internet connection. My instrumentation machines are SPECIFICALLY unable to connect to the internet for security reasons, but I can't register a copy of windows without putting them online. Microsoft == FAIL.

It's too bad Apple is going the same way. Try to set a MacOS timezone to UTC with the control panel. Go ahead, just try it.

Thanks..... And NO..... I have had more than my fill of this place. But ill talk to the landlord and let her know your interested in this spot when i leave if you want?? :D

Great! Thank you! I would like to use it as a summer place.:D I was there a couple of times. I had breakfast in a place that was famous for its cheese blintzs and my first Japanese food and saki for dinner. Saw the bell. Was not otherwise impressed with the town.

Sorry to hear that man. Looks like he's gonna be okay though, so that's a blessing.

Anyone know of a retailer that carries American Optical sunglasses? I left mine on a table in Waffle Hut and don't remember what size they were and don't want to play the whole "send them back if they don't fit" thing.

Smoke and prayers Aikiguy. Hope all is well with your dad

Getting the family dressed and ready. Time to head into town to look at some camping chairs. Lebaron has a sale on Eureka folding chairs. My wife really likes them

You can get them down at the river store.

Doc

Edit: guess that's kind of worthless information if you don't know the size..... Duh..

Thanks everyone for the kind words and thoughts, appreciate it. Sounds like he's back at the local hospital. Docs make their rounds in about an hour, so the family will be able to get some answers on his condition then. Yeah, he's too damn stubborn to let this slow him down for sure lol.

I blew up 5 toilets in 4 states over the last 5 days... Does that count for anything?

I have learned basically every other windows release is ok. I'm going to keep 7 till the one after 8 is released. The next laptop I get is getting wiped immediately and loaded with 7.

Try to get me to use Mac! Go ahead, just try it! I have absolutely ZERO Apple products. I like it that way!
