"Old Knives"

I recently stumbled across this old IXL Pruner that once belonged to my Great Opa. It was pulled from the dirt in a barn, soaked in diesel, then mineral oil before being scrubbed with steel wool. Amazingly, the edge is keen and the spring is still strong (although the blade wobbles when open. Interesting to note that each of the cast iron (or steel) handle scales is hollowed out on the inside.

For comparison, here's a pic I found of one in better condition. I thought the handle was exorbitantly pitted with rust until seeing this pic - now I know that was just a feature.

Barbababa, could you [please tell us more about that Knife- I cant quite see the Stamping=- Anderson? Sanderson?

Oldmanwilly, Now thats a rescue, do that Knife a favour and make it a Garden Knife!

Campbellclanman Campbellclanman His name was Sven Gustaf Anderson (1859-1923) and he started his buisiness 1881 and was forced to close his doors in the years just after 1900. It was a big depression in Sweden/Eskilstuna at that time and many fine knifemakers did not make it...
The more comon model of this pattern have a pen blade opposite the main, and nickel silver bolsters in both ends. Usually in dark smooth deer horn.
This is the first time I have found one with the keeper in the back and no pen blade, it could mean it was entended as a soldiers knife with just the nessesary tools (or a working mans tool-knife). Of the 3 knives I have, they all have stainless steel tools (marked ROSTFRI) wich would indicate that he was eager to use the finest and most modern steel avalible. I think it was first used in Germany 1895, and just there after in Sweden. Even though he was only active for ~20 years, knives with his stamp are quite common findings in flee markets in Sweden, and often in fine working condition. Probably due to good material and workmanship
this is one have lived a harder life

Roland sold this knife to me a long time ago!
A lot of people have a knife once owned by Roland!! He was a great, one of a kind, collector, and a friend!!! Joanne and I went to visit him, and took him out to dinner a few years ago, and really enjoyed his company!! A bright, outspoken man!!
He got booted from Bladeforums, several years ago for being so outspoken, honestly so!!
He should have been a politician!! Definitely would get my vote!!
He hasn't been well! I checked in with his daughter today and he's in a palliative situation!!
He's comfortable, and the nurses are taking good care of him!!
Wish I could drop in, but it's not possible for me right now!
He's got Family all over the globe, well taken care of!
I wish you Joy in your last days, Dr. Roland!!!

Charlie I was wondering about him myself of late. Emailed him several weeks ago and he was feeling OK but extremely weak. It's so sad knowing he won't be a part of our wonderful brother(and sister)hood any longer. He's such a great person and always shows an incredible curiosity about anything knife related. I'll miss him dearly. I'm glad he's well taken care of by his loving family.

He got to meet some of his grandchildren for the first time a couple of weeks ago, from across the sea!! It took a lot out of him physically though!! I managed to talk to him after, and he got immense joy from being with this new generation, and, with his own successful children!!

I too am very sorry and have been communicating with Roland until he pretty much could not, I feel for the long time friends such as Charlie, I haven't known Roland as long as some of you.
I used to ring Roland every month to 6 weeks or so- or if I was slack it would be a bit longer. Over the years Roland and I have enjoyed many-a-chats over the Phone and constant e-mails, shared many photos and told many stories.
I too have purchased knives from Roland- when he was here at BF, as well as when he was in AAPK, he always was far too generous - too much so that I always paid him more than he was asking, he would always want to lower the price because he is just a really nice guy. I was always very scared when buying from Roland because there are people out there who use other people just to get what they want.
I am deeply saddened he is leaving us, I hope that one day when I leave this place that Roland and I cross paths again- this would be great, I can only hope, until then I am going to really miss Roland extremely so.
