Thanks for clearing that up Cal!!Notice that he referred to the middle photograph, a Schrade CutCo, 1904-1946, not to the Schrade Walden in the photograph underneath that.
Yes. The Swinden key is a much later invention!!And were the earlier ones pinned and it was just so well done that you can’t see the pins?
The covers are beautiful and unique. I think I might invest in either a blade delete or replacement. Is that … the footprint on the moon? Somebody wanted the Knafs Lander and tried a very creative solution? It’s unique at least!

I think I will carry it as is for a while. The broken pen blade has been sharpened by a previous owner and could be used to cut. We will see how it goes!Nice knife!!
Many have found uses for a broken-off blade/stub in a knife!!!
Opening boxes w/o cutting up the contents is one!!
Thank you so much for the recommendation. I will definitely consider it. Seems like a great option.Another option that you have if you don't want to take the knife apart is to open the main blade fully, tape the edge up ....... open the pen about 1/3 open and wedge something between it and the covers to keep it from closing. Tape off the bolsters or anything else you might cut by accident. Use a Dremel tool with cut off wheel, and cut diagonally across the tang. Sand the cut to make it smooth, then take a large screwdriver and push it shut. It should look like a ramp going down to the liner and it will hold the correct tension on the spring.

I did that to this old Catt Barlow years ago because I didn't want it taken apart. It had a broken pen like yours.

You can polish up that Celluloid with 2000 grit sandpaper, followed by Flitz metal Polish and make it sparkle. If you don't want to bother the patina on the bolsters, shield, etc., .... tape it off with masking tape.

To each his own, but here's my counter argument:Thank you so much for the recommendation. I will definitely consider it. Seems like a great option.
To each his own, but here's my counter argument:
Cutting off the broken blade at the tang doesn't change the thickness of the handle, if you like single bladed knives for their thinness in the pocket. A small coping blade or scraping tool is a handy thing, saving the edge of your main blade for clean slicing duty.

Absotively no argument here. I just can't pass up an opportunity to show off my old knives with stubby secondaries.I didn't mean to start an argument .............. I just gave him another option ...... to each their own indeed !![]()
