"Old Knives"

pressed bone
just sharing BUT Can we please play "guess the handle material"? i think you all have seen enough to know more than i... it looks like wood, it looks liker bone, it looks like petrified wood.... any thoughts? i think this is the best thread because if no one knows then let's just say i'm sharing my new find with mystery scales ;)
UPDATE: looks like it's Snakeskin Stag. I'm glad I know because if I see it again I'll remember why I found it different and attractive

Scapel sharp and full carbon steel sheep foot blade.

:)

I purchased the knife on the left on eBay about a year ago. I purchased the one on the right a couple of weeks ago.

Both are Robeson Shuredge jacks from around 1910-1920 (based on the tang stamps). The one on the left arrived pretty clean. The one on the right had some rust on the blades and on the iron bolsters, so I cleaned off all the rust. The bone is perfect, with no chips or cracks at all in it.

What amazes me about both of these knives is that the blades are essentially completely full as they came from the factory. Both have bear trap solid pulls with super solid half stops and lock up with amazing walk and talk and no wobble whatsoever. I am convinced I could open a bank vault with these knives.

The brown bone example does seem (to me) to have slightly fuller blades... virtually unused despite the patina. It may have simply sat unused for most of it's life. Nice.

Just splendid photograph of that old Hawk! I agree we need to see the lovely open now.

Just two splendid Robesons. The one on the right really gets my blood pumping. What a gem!!

Sorry Gevo - It will have to be another day. I did not take any open pics yet. ;)

It is just a full straight edged sheep foot blade - not a hawk. I think it looks best closed. :)

I really like those Robesons myself - I would like to Primble-ize that one on the right!:D:D

I did not do much to the Barlows in this picture, other than a good surface dirt cleaning, which did not disturb the old patina. They both have nice full blades and nice hard half stops. The old Kutmaster I had eyed in an Antique store for the past four months or so. I liked it's old antique, rustic looks, with nice wooden handles, and the old steel bolsters. I finally decided to pay the twenty dollars for it and when I brought it home, it was filthy dirty and would get your hands black, just handling it a bit. The end of the blade was squared, so I ground it into a nice sheep foot with slightly swedged edges around the curved end. It has a nice even sheep foot blade now and I re-patined the blade and steel pins on the wood handles. I cleaned the filthy wood with a 50/50 mix of lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol (rubber gloves required) and 0000 steel wool. After the alcohol dried, I gave the wood a rub with the steel wool until it had a nice satin gloss, then waxed with Briwax. I sharpened the old carbon steel blade to scapel sharpness. It too has hard half stops and all three are now quite clean to hold and carry ! The old Remington saw-cut bone is really beautiful in person. ;)
