"Old Knives"

Nick - the XX is a sweetheart!! Coming from Cases Great era - and in lovely condition too! Good score mate!

Thanks so much Duncan, your positive comments are always very appreciated my friend! There is something truly special about the bone from the XX era and before. Just a remarkably rugged and sustainable material.

A large penknife just under 4 inches closed. Likely made by one of the large Sheffield firms circa 1905 for the Army & Navy Department Store in London.

Thank you my friend, that's a beautiful Sleeveboard, and an interesting piece of history. I remember going in the Army & Navy store on Victoria Street in the mid 1970's, and later lived near the Lewisham branch for a short time.

Struggling to keep up as more and more interesting items appear here. Thanks to all.
KnifeHead ... an amazing kit in such good condition.
67nick ... the oldie but newie Case is a very good find.
Jack ... You are turning them out thick and fast. I recognise the whittler - most characterful and the pruner is good and wholesome. The fruit knife is a gem. It really is quite small. I would love to see it sometime. I daren't go down the fruit knife road.
smiling-knife ... the Army and Navy knife is very smart and it is very long. A fine piece.
Thanks again to all for showing these.

Picked up this wee fruit knife in silver and MOP at the weekend. John Yeomans Cowlishaw, Market Street, Sheffield, 1916.

No...don't temp me! That fruit knife is splendid, my friend. Really deserves to be seen on this page too. I could not help myself

S-K

Thanks ADEE  I got the fruit knife for a reasonable price, but NO, definitely don't want to go down that road, my pockets aren't deep enough! :D

Thanks Gev :)

An old Gustav Emilern skinner I picked up on a visit to the Sheffield antiques quarter. It was the only decent knife I saw all day!

Another interesting item Jack. What is the tang stamp logo ? Once again the words are in English and not German.

Thanks ADEE  It looks like an axe or cleaver embedded in a block? Hey, is this like a Rorschach Test?! :D

This is another tiny thing, but it has great walk and talk, and I rather like it. Wish the tang scrawl was more forthcoming though.

Hi Jack. Nice scales on the penknife. The mark... Sheffield Made perhaps.

I love the thin crescent nail nick on that one, Jack! Very nice. :)

Thanks fellers. S-K, when I first got the knife, I assumed the tang read 'Sheffield Made', but looking at it now I'm not so sure. Maybe I have just spent too much time looking at it this evening, or maybe the cutler was dyslexic :)

I had this EXACT knife about two years ago. It now resides in very good hands in NZ;)

The one I sold was Identical to this but in original shape where this one underwent a bit of restoration:eek: I bought it this way and am glad to have it but I always look for "as is" condition that can yet be made serviceable again:thumbup:

Electric Cut Co Jack with great Bone covers Circa 1910---1920? 3 7/16 closed, SOLID blades with great walk and talk:thumbup:
