"Old Knives"

Some nice additions to this thread. KJ I recognize that Sword brand wharncliffe with the repair. Nice wharncliffe collection you've got there.

Also really like the Northfield 67Nick.

I can't find much information on this one yet, so I've also posted this in the BRL forum.

This pen knife is marked "F. W. W. Germany" on both blades. The knife is swell center, almost Coke-bottle-esque in shape, without bolsters. Has brass pins and liners.

The interesting thing that appealed to me about this knife is the unique shield on the front. It's in the shape of a flower pot, with inlay of striped metal outwards to the scale pins. It's quite pretty.

I'm not sure how old this one is yet, but I'll update the thread once we figure it out.

Good week for old knives. Lucky pick up of 2 knives, both probably made before 1920. One is a Shatt & Morgan hawksbill in nice shape and the other is a Chris Wolf large jack. This one is fairly easy to open, spring is weak, most other examples are reported to have bear traps for springs.
Really happy with the S&M, have not found very many vintage S&M knives, they seem to be a little scarce.

I have a Chris Wolf Jack somewhere but cannot find it right now. I think they were a custom order through Sears ? Not sure if i read it or made it up by getting memories crossed. Anybody know about these rather rare knives ?

Joe, You are correct.....offered in Sears, Roebuck & Co.'s 1905 catalog. There is an informative article in the November 2014 Knife World "The Ugliest Looking Knife You Ever Saw". The knives were marked JESS CROUCH and CHRIS WOLF. Check it out. I don't know how to link this particular article. Barry

Wow. Thanks Barry. Connecting an old knife to it's original advertising copy makes knife collecting so much more interesting. Especially this one described as "the ugliest looking knife on the market" !

That is a beautiful old dogleg whittler! Really pretty! Would it be considered a Norfolk Whittler?

I think, if I'm remembering correctly, that pattern is the one that's actually named Wharncliffe (from there, any blade with a straight edge and a sloping spine became labeled as such).

I think it's a Wharncliffe Whittler, the Wharncliffe has 2 blades rather than 3 :)

I, as others here love OLD knives---the fun part is the wonderment---where they've been, what they've seen, who the owner was and what he did for a living, why a knife is in the condition it's in---pristine covers and well worn blades? or beat up covers and full blades?

Or how could the interior brass liner be bent inward but the bone not be cracked? I THINK we all like a good mystery and with that OLD knives fills that void:o

I LOVE the Jigging on this old Robeson EO Jack model #62227. Several tight cracks on the Mark side, the liner in bent in on the Pile side by the EO notch yet the bone isn't cracked there? although there are tight cracks on both sides. There is paint in recesses of the jigging (to be cleaned later)

All I did was flush years worth of debris inside the liners out with hot water and wd-40. Blow the knife dry with compressed air then add and work in a couple of drops of 3 in 1 oil.

The Pen looks to have NEVER been used, the Spear indicates that it was "THEE" blade as there is NO snap at all closing and only a little bit on the open---just enough tension to hold the Spear safely in it's closed position.

SOLID as in no play on either blade:thumbup: But when I saw it I feel in love with the beautiful jigged bone covers and pretty much FULL blades---just wish there was snap to the Spear:o

The blades are so sharp, atoms run in the other direction for fear of being split:D

Here she is...
