"Old Knives"

My apologies for breeching forum etiquette that I wasn't aware of. (I just re-read the sticky guidelines in case something had changed.) I've edited my post, but I guess anyone that quoted mine will need to do so as well.

I'm not sure it's in the guidelines at all Mike, though it's been discussed a couple of times in the Lounge in the past. I know that some members prefer to be discreet because they have said as much. Personally, I try to call a poster by the name they post under, unless they sign their posts or have done in the past, sometimes seems awkward when you know them well and/or where they have a long user name. I certainly prefer calling Dan 'Dan' instead of 'Silenthunterstudios'! :D I was very pleased when he started signing his posts :) I just think it's a general courtesy. My post wasn't aimed at you especially, some of our finest members here are the worst offenders! ;) Of course there's nothing more to it than friendliness. Easy to forget we're on the internet. I'm happy to be called Jack :)

Edit - Just tried to PM you Mike, but you don't have that option enabled

If I'm one of the worst offenders please understand there was nothing malicious in my posting. During our lunch we discussed and respected not posting pictures of our get together. I only meant to express my sincere appreciation for the book I was gifted and the immense knowledge it contains and also show my appreciation for his insight on old knives. I have edited linking the first name to the forum name (removed forum name) from my OP and please ask anyone quoting my post to please do the same. I don't visit Carl's lounge often enough to have been part of or recall the conversation of anonymity.

I'd say the worst offenders are two other good friends of ours Paul, they are incorrigible! :D Absolutely understood my friend :)

I always have actually never thought of that guys! and I mean that in the most sincere way.
I call people on the forum by their first names - whom everybody knows by their first names- sitting here I am unsure if I may have breached anyone's anonymity wishes - but Jack - with mentioning a couple of Paul's friends - is one of these me ? :(

I have had a number of discussions on this subject my friend, and when long-standing members of this forum have been party to those discussions, and we have got to joking about the worst culprits, two of the very nicest guys on this forum, let's just say that neither of those gentlemen live in the US! ;) :D You are not the worst! ;)

Sorry to have de-railed this thread

A.W. Wadsworth & Son

... and a J.A. Henckels (Not sure the use of this pattern of knife or why it has a spike, someone please elaborate)

Has anyone heard of A.W. Wadsworth & Son ? I hadn't heard of them before this knife.

Well I've never seen a nail file like that before. Strange but alluring design. I feel so silly for not realizing what it is.
Thanks

A.W. Wadsworth was a Kastor & Bros. import brand of German and Austrian knives. 1905-1922?

I have one, that I'm sure I've posted here before, but may have fallen victim to Photobucket.

Wow! Now that is what I call Jerry rigged!!!!! Crude Ingenuity never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks for that little bit of info. That's probably why I haven't heard of them. Seems like a fine knife to me. Snappy.

Thanks for that Jack:)
I take that the way you meant- as a kind way of letting me know- Yes Duncan - one of them is you! Lol...
I am sitting wondering just who and where I do this- most probably all of my posts without realising it? now this is bought to attention- I would say this is rife as I recall many people calling each other by first names other than the Forum Name?

Just so I know- this topic ( and no I dont think you de-railed the thread jack ) is calling people by their real names- other than their forum names- thats right isnt it?

Guys and Gals- if by any way I have done this I invite you - ( I mean this in the nicest way) to pm me and let me know where I have done this to yourselves - or others so I may edit post.
I probably wont edit such ones where everyone knows people names such as Charlie, etc.

Jack- from now on I wont call you by your first real name- but use your forum name - so from now on Im going to call you Jack :D:p

Old Knife content....

Thanks pal :) I hope I haven't maligned you! ;) I think it is rife here Duncan (on some forums it's a bannable 'offence'!), someone sees a name being used and does the same, and many posters are perfectly happy to be called by their first names, even by their full names, but some aren't, even the ones who ignore the faux pas. When we are all such good friends here, and swap PMs, and letters, and phonecalls, it can sometimes be easy to forget. Having had the subject raised by others, I prefer to err on the side of caution myself, even where others might name a poster. Many posters add their first name to their sig line after a while, which helps to avoid confusion, while a few sign some of their posts - and I think once they have done that once, it is fair to be able to address them by their name. However, the names of some posters are only known here because others have used their name, rather than them using it themselves. pertinux pertinux , for example, has only ever signed her posts 'P', so while we are good friends, I would only address her in the way she prefers to be addressed (hope you'll excuse my using you as an example P ) when posting on the forum :)

A smashing feller gave me this Robeson HJ :)

Nice R8shell, that ol boy has character. you did well rescuing it.
Thank you! As is sometimes the case, after de-rustifying and some cosmetic bone-patching, the knife is solid with snappy springs.

Thank you Jack- no you haven't maligned me at all- certainly not taking it that way!
I think Paul Hilborn definitely is the worst offender by far - Im calling for a infraction"!
Jack- Those Robesons are something special arent they!!! I heavily suspect who that fella is who gifted you that Beauty! Well deserved my friend.

Just to add knife content ..
I showed this lovely Challenge Scout recently - Charlie posted one as well- slight differences- but challenge and beautiful and in a lot better condition that this example- but that doesnt take any of the fascination and liking I have for this wonderful Knife.
Each Challenge Scout like this - ( if you are lucky enough to find one ) has a beautiful full convex shape to the Bone- just a wee tad more than the "ordinary" Scout - and the Bone is incredible! everything about this Knife is superb!
I love the very tidy engraving on the Bolster of a past owners name and address- as they did in those days-engraving was/is an art.

Check out the neat old etching on the Blade....( as well as a better view of the engraving on the Bolster )..

Just a word on forum etiquette, some of us post under our own names, others add their name to their sig lines, others post anonymously, or at least discreetly, and I know some of the latter group prefer to keep it that way, at least in public posts

Due to a feature in the new forum software that I love (notification when one is mentioned, or when one's post is quoted), I have been summoned.

I debated quoting the above and posting this short response in the Lounge instead, but thought it efficient to respond to this discussion in context:

I agree with everything Jack has so eloquently written here-- including that genuine friendship, in-person meetings, and the sense of camaraderie fostered here can sometimes obscure the reality that in an online forum on the World Wide Web, it is always best to address others in the manner in which they (re)present themselves.

[All legitimately warm fuzzies aside, we are on no one's porch, and not an iota of our discussions here are private. Every word is imminently, eminently searchable.]

As Jack astutely picked up on early and describes above, I very intentionally do not use my name on this forum, nor within any other online venue for that matter. My reasons range from the practical to the Quixotic (the latter including the pretense of privacy).

Well said, Jack, all of it!

( I always have to search for that wee squiggle )
I do admit - looking back that I have called you by name in past posts- apologies - if you would look at this in the light of trying to be more polite- but I get it now.
I would say with GEC Business and your photos that name you - and others who often refer to your name- etc its a wide "problem"...so what do we do when it comes to photos of the Rendezvous ( and other photos at other meetings that name people ) videos on line from the Apostle- and others in the forum/outside the forums? I think this is why I just kind of'flowed along
with it?

I would say everybody- or close too everybody is guilty of this - very few who arent.
Also to add - people who have put their own photos up of themselves, family etc cant expect anonymity- and then post recognizable details in other posts? - thats when it gets confusing - This is certainly not pointed at anybody at all whatsoever - but a very real happening right now within the forums.

I will really try to watch myself with this- I met with a person who so very kindly showed me his stunning knives- but didnt want me to post any photos of the knives period nor relate them to him - but kindly gave me permission to take photos for my own reference- thats fantastic trust! I understood this and totally respect that- if someone says that to me- I would NEVER break his trust.
Righty-ho clear as now the topic has been bought Up Jack, ~P - Thanks you for the input...I better add a knife here..
Acquired this lovely Ulster lately- man this is one VERY VERY nice knife!

All understood, Duncan, and no worries. I think the horse left the barn long ago when it comes to my name,* and I of course cannot control what anyone else does. Nor is it my intention to make anyone feel bad!

The point, for now, is to simply use discretion, and heed others' online representations of themselves.

*Up to a point. I don't believe my last name has been included anywhere here, yet. SO BE IT. Please.

[Further conversation is probably best taken up in the Lounge; I've now entered Jack's post there as well, after all.]

A favorite old knife:
