"Old Knives"

Some beautiful knives have been sneaking into this discussion about what to call who!!:)
That "basketweave"-like jigging on your I*XL Barlow is cool, ~P!!
In fact the whole knife is great!!

Just don't call me late for dinner!!:D

Thanks, guys! I agree about the jigging.

Fine lines throughout:

However, this is what stole my little heart away at first glance--

Awe man, I am so out of touch...transparent Paul:( I apologise to any I've called out by name and shouldn't have. I'm just big and loveable, it's my trusting nature. I let my guard down here because of how comfortable this place is.

Anonymity? yeah look at my forum name:D my door is ALWAYS open unless your uninvited, then it can get interesting getting caught without a hall pass:oops: I respect all here and again hope no ill is taken by my openness. I now know the rules/guidelines from here on out. I feel a brother/sisterhood by calling one by his or hers first name, they say (who's they)? It's OBVIOUSLY the most used word one will hear throughout one's life... one's first name that is. Nanc has other names for me but I can't say them here without blushing or for possibly offending others, but I'll always respond to Paul:p

So we move on, and how bout that weather:D

Here's a long departed Jimmy Allen Robeson jack knife, man I regret letting certain knives go and this is one of them. I dug these pics up from a few years back.

Thank you Jack- no you haven't maligned me at all- certainly not taking it that way!
I think Paul Hilborn definitely is the worst offender by far - Im calling for a infraction"!
Jack- Those Robesons are something special arent they!!! I heavily suspect who that fella is who gifted you that Beauty! Well deserved my friend.

Just to add knife content ..
I showed this lovely Challenge Scout recently - Charlie posted one as well- slight differences- but challenge and beautiful and in a lot better condition that this example- but that doesnt take any of the fascination and liking I have for this wonderful Knife.
Each Challenge Scout like this - ( if you are lucky enough to find one ) has a beautiful full convex shape to the Bone- just a wee tad more than the "ordinary" Scout - and the Bone is incredible! everything about this Knife is superb!
I love the very tidy engraving on the Bolster of a past owners name and address- as they did in those days-engraving was/is an art.

Check out the neat old etching on the Blade....( as well as a better view of the engraving on the Bolster )..

Thanks my friend :) :D I will never forget the time I was given that Robeson in a Sheffield pub :) I'm loving the old Scouts you're posting Duncan, each one is absolutely superb

Due to a feature in the new forum software that I love (notification when one is mentioned, or when one's post is quoted), I have been summoned.

Err..That might have been the sound of my size 12 pit-boots trampling on egg-shells!

I debated quoting the above and posting this short response in the Lounge instead, but thought it efficient to respond to this discussion in context:

I agree with everything Jack has so eloquently written here-- including that genuine friendship, in-person meetings, and the sense of camaraderie fostered here can sometimes obscure the reality that in an online forum on the World Wide Web, it is always best to address others in the manner in which they (re)present themselves.

[All legitimately warm fuzzies aside, we are on no one's porch, and not an iota of our discussions here are private. Every word is imminently, eminently searchable.]

As Jack astutely picked up on early and describes above, I very intentionally do not use my name on this forum, nor within any other online venue for that matter. My reasons range from the practical to the Quixotic (the latter including the pretense of privacy).

Well said, Jack, all of it!

~ P.

Sincere thanks P :)

That's another stunner Duncan, just how much did you smuggle back through customs?! :D

All understood, Duncan, and no worries. I think the horse left the barn long ago when it comes to my name,* and I of course cannot control what anyone else does. Nor is it my intention to make anyone feel bad!

The point, for now, is to simply use discretion, and heed others' online representations of themselves.

*Up to a point. I don't believe my last name has been included anywhere here, yet. SO BE IT. Please.

[Further conversation is probably best taken up in the Lounge; I've now entered Jack's post there as well, after all.]

A favorite old knife:

Thanks again P, your sagacity and eloquence are always a great addition to any conversation

Or 'Gary'! ;) :D

That's why we all love you! :D That's a beauty Paul, love the shield

I can repeat a few of Nanc's names for Paul if any one is interested :D

See you in the Lounge! :D

Hey! I resemble that remark!

Replying to one of Charlie's posts, I once accidentally referred to him as 'Gary' (I think my multi-quotes got mixed up). He sent me a PM saying 'Gary is a perfectly good name, but it isn't mine!' :D

It was kinda fun being Gary for a while!
I almost banned a guy from the forum!!!:D

Too funny! There's a funny story about my naming. I'll post it in the lounge one day soon. Thanks for the chuckle guys.

What is the purpose of this thing?
That long blade appears to have a minutely serrated edge. I surmise that it is a letter opener blade that won't need constant sharpening nor much pressure to open envelopes.

I have an old Miller Bros. knife with what I believe is some sort of nail file/manicure blade. I suppose one could open envelopes with it...Miller Bros Lobster 2 resized.jpg

Nicely Said ~P
( I always have to search for that wee squiggle )
I do admit - looking back that I have called you by name in past posts- apologies - if you would look at this in the light of trying to be more polite- but I get it now.
I would say with GEC Business and your photos that name you - and others who often refer to your name- etc its a wide "problem"...so what do we do when it comes to photos of the Rendezvous ( and other photos at other meetings that name people ) videos on line from the Apostle- and others in the forum/outside the forums? I think this is why I just kind of'flowed along
with it?

I would say everybody- or close too everybody is guilty of this - very few who arent.
Also to add - people who have put their own photos up of themselves, family etc cant expect anonymity- and then post recognizable details in other posts? - thats when it gets confusing - This is certainly not pointed at anybody at all whatsoever - but a very real happening right now within the forums.

I will really try to watch myself with this- I met with a person who so very kindly showed me his stunning knives- but didnt want me to post any photos of the knives period nor relate them to him - but kindly gave me permission to take photos for my own reference- thats fantastic trust! I understood this and totally respect that- if someone says that to me- I would NEVER break his trust.
Righty-ho clear as now the topic has been bought Up Jack, ~P - Thanks you for the input...I better add a knife here..
Acquired this lovely Ulster lately- man this is one VERY VERY nice knife!

That is an exquisite knife. Congratulations.

A little Google search revealed that those blades are (or are very much like) lobster file blades.
- Stuart
It would have to be a very small lobster. ;) More like a crawfish...*

*I know the pattern is called a lobster.
