"Old Knives"

Utica night !!

Galvanic
The stamp on the back of the magnificent gunstock I have not seen on a knife only in the literature. The swell center is a piece of heaven. What is the story behind the badge ? Both knives are spectacular indeed.

I don't remember you showing those and even if I did both are worthy of a million more glances !! The full masters with their shape are masterful !

I love Utica too !!! Come on Charlie :) and everyone who's gottem...show em off

Great bone on that Robeson !!!!

OK I have a Friday night mystery... I have no idea what the handles are made out of on this Aerial Cutlery cigar jack. At the risk of sounding like a numskull, I really think it is hardened leather. Anyone heard of leather scales? Any other thoughts? I have stared at, tapped it, scraped it lightly with my fingernail and it just does not feel like wood which would be the only other material I think it can be. As always, your knowledge is welcomed :)

I wish I could help but I've never seen that type before. I think the knife was rehandled.

Unfortunately I had to step off the proverbial porch a few months ago and have had little time with “life” getting in the way - and quite honestly missed checking in to one of my favorite threads and associated members !! Been so long there is no way to even catch up but went through many pages and as expected fantastic old knives posted by all

Those easy openers are really nice TR, and Gev the badge I got from a lady that said her grandfather worked at Utica Cutlery. He was a security guard for the company. The UTK tang stamp is the oldest mark used by Utica. Here is another one. View attachment 824385 View attachment 824386

Mike – what an awesome knife and piece of history  !!! Sure beats having a campaign button with their names :) ...

Here is a knife I haven’t shown as of yet – a Challenge Cut Co Whittler, 3” closed with hard snapping blades and tight - very lightly sharpened if at all but certainly shows signs of wear. It was a salesman sample based on the residual ink left on the pile side of master (see photo) - I believe the #s are worn and light due to the handling over the years that occurred prior to me scoring it - I imagine the salesman had potential buyers handling it during demos and the prior caretakers of the knife may also be responsible - grimy hands on blades does take its toll over the years :). Nonetheless I am also attaching a 1925 catalog cut of this knife and indeed the pattern # matches the salesman’s ink if you look closely.

Nice Challenge whittler, Lee! And well done pictures, capturing the details!!!

Great Patriotic (or should I say Political?) penknife, Mike!! I love the associated paperwork you collect also!!

Getting back to Utica, here is a Harness Jack with an odd tang stamp. I sent these pics to Utica years ago, but they didn't have any information about the stamp.

I've seen celluloid deteriorate into some weird looking stuff...??

Thanks Longblade and Charlie, I like that Challenge it has an etch and of course the ink!! Never seen that Utica mark before Charlie, great looking knife!

And I forgot the mention yes Charlie I like the old Abalone way better then the put together stuff they are using today but it was hard to find the right size for lager frames back then and now it about impossible so the mosaic stuff is better then nothing for sure.

It looks like a homemade re-handle job to me. I don't see any pins, so someone could have glued leather on the liners, over the backspring pin to replace broken covers. I've done that with wood, and I could imaging it working well enough with leather. Kinda cool.:thumbsup:

Thanks r8shell... I love Aerial Cutlery knives and since a majority of them were celluloid scales it's possible they gassed out. So it makes perfect sense that someone re-scaled them and apparently decided to try leather LoL. I did find this interesting old post on BF and wish I could see the pictures. Oh well... onto the next old knife!

Thanks for that link, I did a super secret hack to restore the pictures. ;)

Well, I've started the project. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I've got the leather glued and trimmed up. I put one coat of dye on but after sanding the leather, I'm going to redye it when I get home. I've got it sanded down fairly well. After the dye dries, I think I'm going with a superglue finish to harden the leather and make it more moisture resistant. And hopefully, I'll be able to sand it smooth and get a nice polish on it

Here it is. I recited with superglue, wet sanded with 220, 600, and 1500 grit sand paper. Then the buffing wheel with green compound on tight stitch wheel then red rouge on soft wheel. Finished up with mothers mag polish. I'm pretty happy wih this little guy now.

Now I totally want to try putting leather covers on a knife! I wonder how they held up? I've seen lots of stacked leather handled fixed blades, and they can last a long time if you keep them waxed.

Here's the Camillus, I replaced the cell with wood (I cheated on the spring pin: that's just a metal bead that I glued on afterwards) :) :

Great old scout leghog ;) The scout knives were some of the first knives I started collecting because the scout website has a really good historical documentation of the different manufacturer's and the years they were made. I took a liking to the Imperial's and of course my Ulster's... here are a couple of my favorite Ulster scouts. The top one in the picture is from 1927 to 1940 and the lower one is from 1926-1928 with the Dwight Divine & Sons tang stamp on the main blade.

Here is an fairly uncommon carved pearl dog shaped knife from the "Electric Cutlery Co." circa 1900. Carved pearl dog knives were produced by a few other cutlery firms in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and those known (including this Electric) were all made in Germany. While known examples do look similar, they all vary slightly and have different blade configurations. Only the most skilled German cutlers could produce such a knife. The odd looking folding brass tube on the underside is actually a sheath which contains a needle for sewing. The thread is visible and is seen wrapped around the end of the brass sheath.

Here is another from the same company marked Freidmann & Lauterjung, they owned the Electric trade mark. I agree the German cutlers knew what they were doing that'View attachment 823349 View attachment 823350 View attachment 823351 s for sure!

Electrifying posts guys
