"Old Knives"

Duncan, beautiful pre 1916 VF Senator Pen folder! Gorgeous pick bone handles, wonderful rounded end bar shield, hand hammered pins and very nice prominent blade etch:thumbsup::thumbsup: This very old folder has all the right stuff!!

Just got this HSB, serpentine pen? Guessing it’s from the 1930’s or so. 3 1/8”. Milled/coined steel or nickel? liners and pins. Made by NYK Co I think? Would like to hear more from you guys please.

Thanks Lloyd- I remember you commenting before when I posted that one!

Glenn - you took the words right out of my mouth -Nick that's a real dandy that one! Often these smaller Knives get overlooked- but lately I see that changing as these are spectacular Knives in every way.

Thanks guys for the nice words. Duncan, your pen knife you just posted is sweet, the bone is gorgeous! I personally like smaller knives especially single spring pens, they just disappear in the pocket and is sufficient for most of my cutting needs. I love trappers and other similar sized patterns too but find myself toting smaller slimmer knives more often especially the last couple years. Plus, these small pens with tip bolsters are just so classic. But then again, I love all patterns! The big English jacks posted recently are soooo nice.

Campbellclanman, to have any knife that's over one hundred years old in that fine condition is pretty special, but add the etch and WOW. :)

Kai76, that's a beautiful serpentine model which was most likely made by the "New York Knife Co." and is a bit earlier than you might think.
Enclosed is a catalog illustration from 1910 which shows your model offered in pearl or stag. "Stag" often referred to jigged bone by many cutlery companies.

H herder Thanks for the info, I knew I’d get info about this knife here. I looked at the HSB catalog but couldn’t find my knife. Could you send me a link to the catalog you found the info from? I was guessing it was from the 30’s or 40’s but didn’t know it was this old. Thanks again herder!

Glad to help, but there is no link. The graphics are from my library.

Ok picked up this Camillus today along with some others( newest additions thread for all) anyways I believe this to be the oldest of the bunch. I believe the covers are jigged purple heart, as their purplish in sunlight, have a dense wavy grain. Tang stamp reads:
CAMILLUS
CUTLERYCO.
CAMILLUSNY.
U.S.A. (edit:moved the blade and found more to the stamping lol)
In that order, any ideas to age? Main is a 7-8 pull snappy both ways. Caplifter starts at bout a 5 then gets stiffer just before it cams over, to snap open with authority. Found out lots of good info on other threads as well, to everyone who helped a real BIG Thanks guys!

MH, that tang stamp puts it circa 1941–1946. Does it have a U.S.A. below Camillus NY? Nice old knife

Thanks! Yes it does, I moved the blade to half open and you can see the USA then. I missed it earlier. Its still good and solid. Those dates makes sense as it has steel liners, saving brass for wartime production and all.

I checked Goins and he says that tang stamp could be 1919–1941 (Goins pg. 43). Is the tang stamp on the front or back of the tang? Is there a Sword Brand stamped on the tang either side? It could have had Sword Brand etched on the blade originally but it does not look like it does now with all the patina on the blade. Most blade etches on vintage knives have long ago faded or worn off but intact and original etches are highly sought after by some collectors and they tend to command higher prices.

Nothing sword brand on it I can find, the stamping is on the mark side. I'm 99 percent sure it hasn't had a blade etch, even with the dark patina this blade has the factory finish. Its smooth and even, just darkened now. The bolsters and the back springs have the only sign of pitting, and that's very shallow. Mostly just made them darker. The wood is almost black but in direct sun its definitely got a purple hue.

This model was a non-issue knife that was sold to soldiers through U.S. Army post exchanges during WWII and was discontinued shortly after the war.
It originally had a bail as did most military pocket knives.
