"Old Knives"

Yes Duncan, I am pretty sure it was made by them! Another infamous contract knife, with their famous punch!!:)

To your question Duncan, back in the late 1990s, I used to think German knives
were "other"!! They had steel pins in nickel bolsters, they fitted their stag differently often, their knives didn't look like Case knives which I collected avidly (10 dots and previous), and, they were ridiculously cheap, so I thought there was something wrong with them!!! Missed opportunities!!
Now I have grown to like them, and appreciate them!! I missed the boat on German knives, just like I missed the boat on IBM stocks etc!!! It was as much visceral as anything else!!
Too soon old, too late smart!!!

Hey Charlie I think we all look at you as THE example of what a Knife collector should be and should do.
There’s one thing that does bug me is that pin colour in some models.

Edit - was climbing off a plane before....

Yes at times when you see the Steel Pin in a Nickel Bolster it tends to smack one in the face a wee bit - thankfully from most I have seen in the Henckels Whittlers etc this seems to be minimal, the larger old Hunters at times as you can see in my last few posts back - the Bolsters have a proud Pin making the Bolster to be almost like the Cheap Shell Bolster construction like a lot of the Richards etc, but these early German Bolsters are not that.
Great points Charlie and very much appreciated.

Thanks guys. Looking forward to more Herder by Herder pics. Some more Henckels stag:

Both are amazing! But for that pruner, you just got to think the knife was built to fit the stag!

It probably took a lot of sorting to find the right stag for that pruner, but then again they had a lot back in the day!

I guess I'm over the steel pins standing out on German knives. On the plus side, I usually know it's a German knife just by the pins.
And I could have bought Google stock, but didn't.

Lol - oh to turn back the years - I would not have bought a house - and bought 3m, IBM, google stocks lol.

Mike I am with you- there tends to be quite the variances in the strength of the contrast between the Steel and the Bolsters - often when you see a very White coloured Nickle Silver - that’s when it stands out - but when you see the deeper coloured NS Bolsters it at times hardly shows.
Hillbilly my friend- have a look out on early Solingen or early Sheffield knives - actually if you go back to page 877 in this Thread - post 17531 - that Oval Bar tenders Knife you will see just how good these early Cutlers were with the Hafting business. At times the actual Bark is just a sliver thick - most probably because they would have had a bit more choice in Stag and of course time wasn’t money so much then to as it us now, and the pot boiling over with true craftsmanship.

Yes, Duncan, the jigging is terrific, and I've always been a sucker for green bone. Quite undervalued.
