"Old Knives"

Just in the other day

Camillus US Army Radio Jack or PX exchange knife. Four line stamp with jigged Rosewood handles

Still had the factory edge

Older German knife!! Well made, it takes a good edge and stayed tight with no wobble at all, even though it's a well used lockback!!
Decent bone handles; note the worm groove. English-sounding name of "Harrington cutlery". The German cutleries fought hard for their market share after WWI and WWII!
No idea who made it, or exactly when . . . . . . Opinions are welcome!!!

Thanks Charlie - nice! Yep everything on that knife kinda ticks all the boxes doesn’t it!

Paul matey - another fine Schrade! That pattern is a nice sleek number!

Thank you Duncan and Jeff.

Jeff, it is definitely in the 50's or maybe early 60's range with celluloid, crocus polished main and pinned bolsters. The 896Y doesn't seem to be shown in catalogs but you can find the 896K which was the same except it had butter & molasses celluloid.

That’s a real nice knife Calvin.
Both yours and Charlie’s both look like American made knives if I can say that- like a transitional knife.
Both lookers that have everything going for them and both have strong similarities in Bone Jig type, Bolsters etc. very nice!

Cal, that's a nice one, everyone that's posted German knives have posted some really nice knives. I also had some bias against German knives but finally figured out that just like vintage American made knives their is a wide range of quality.
This Garland Barlow changed my mine, as well made as any of my vintage Barlows.

Wow that’s a nice one Augie - Garland? XLNT is Kastor Bros isn’t it? So is Garland another trade name under Kastor - as there were a few or so you think Garland is a customer / merchant stamp?

Thank you Duncan, information is hard to find, from what I can figure out Garland was a trade name for a New York importer, Max Klaas, dating from 1913-1940. Which company actually made it is unknown as far as I know.

I have a feeling the Klaas family was the maker of Garland Knives and Kastor used them as one of their many suppliers. The XLNT logo was used by several cutlers around Germany so I am not sure it is specific to Kastor.

Here is a post I made a while back.

Below is from the Kastor List of brands... it shows Garland on the list but shows the parent company as "Max Klaas" and the Kastor related column says "suspect". I think that it is why I came to the conclusion previously that they are not an "owned" brand of Kastor's.
