#OMG - I've turned into that weird Opinel guy....what the heck!!!

Thank You for the comparo pics SAK! My garden Opie is among my favorites, it resides permanently in my kitchen knife drawer ;) seeing them side by side just convinced me that I need a slim no. 8

these are just the ones from the kitchen drawer :) Yep, I like Opies, I like 'em a lot, the slim one shown is a #10 :)

Very nice bro! Nice mod on the No. 10 too. I don't have the skill to mod anything. One more thing on that slim No. 8, the blade is about 2/3's the width of the Garden...very thin and flexible!

Always great to see your Opinels, Duane :)

Being honest, some years ago I thought "what would I do with such a cheap looking knife" nothing special... but after some years I really love (!) these nearly indestructable design and the no-nonsense-pattern.

I actually think I also turned into one of these weird Opinel guys...

Some modded ... one is still original - a quiete older pic :)

The most economical way to buy Opinel knives, for those on a budget:

And one of my favorites:

Have had them for years. Just now had one that didn't work right. Just got a garden 8 and the lock ring doesn't lock tightly.

What do you guys use to lube the joint...I saw Vaseline mentioned in a post. My new Bubinga is really tight in the joint!

I haven't had to lube mine it loosened up through use maybe after 50 open and closes roughly!

I soaked the handles of mine in mineral oil before I started using them. Haven't had to do anything else to them yet.

Got to get a new can of mineral oil anyway for my other knives, guess I will try it on the Opinel....that bubinga is super tight..much tighter than all my other Opies, I need to do something because the tightness combined with that little, high polish, razor of a blade is an accident waiting to happen!

Thanks KF!

Some of mine I have put a big dollop of petroleum jelly on the blade tang at the pivot, then heated the jelly with a Bic lighter till it melted into the joint ;)

Petroleum jelly? Heated with an open flame? Be very careful.

Im sure someone here has tried the opinel steak knives. I found a 70 dollar set of 4 on line, not the 300 dollar set of 6 on their site. I was thinking of getting them for the in-laws this Christmas but figured I would ask. they are stianless. probably better for them, they would not maintain carbon.

SAKGuy,

Since all Opinels change day to day in terms of their tightness, I think in terms of "average" tightness. I control the "average" tightness in 2 ways. First, I carry and use it for a bit. Second, I control the basic tightness by adjusting the inner collar.

Remove the outer lock ring. To loosen, use a large (very large) standard screwdriver and carefully twist in the slot to open the collar just a bit. I do this with the blade open and closed and open the collar on each end of the slot. Take care not to damage the wood. To tighten, use large pliers and crimp the inner collar closed a bit.

IME, Vaseline and Mineral Oil (both good) are more about making the joint less susceptible to getting tight when wet or in humid conditions.

WMB, as a recovering carbon steel snob, I wouldn't hesitate getting the steak knives in stainless. The Sandvik 12C27 sharpens well, holds an edge longer (its a bit harder) and doesn't transfer taste to food.

Well, not the first time I've looked at Opinels, but this thread was the final nudge I needed. Carbon #7 on it's way to my door now. Looking forward to it!
