#OMG - I've turned into that weird Opinel guy....what the heck!!!

Thanks! That's a lot of info!

I have a question about the staining and the coating: do you apply them with a brush or do you dip the handle in the pot?

Sorry for the late reply — I used Rit Warm Brown, mixed with hot water in a 40-oz. mason jar. Then I opened the blade, locked it in place, and dunked the handle up to the metal collar in the dye. Left it there for 5 minutes (a spring clothespin held it at the right depth), pulled it out and let dry the coating of dye on the wood. After an hour or so, I washed off the dye residue in cold water. I let it dry overnight, then started the coats of oil-urethane.

Top to bottom: #9 in carbon, #8 garden in stainless, #6 in carbon. All handles were treated identically: sand with 100 grit, then dunk. DThe dfferences come from the wood grain and probably oil from my hand. The #6 was bought in the mid-1990s; the others saw some use before the dye job, but not too much.

After i read your post and the bit about failure I ended up buying a no7 to play with it, here are a couple of pictures. I forced a patina with coke and ketchup, and i tried to whittle the handle to make it look like a katana handle. I couldn't do it on the sides because i had already made an easy opening notch.

Any suggestion is welcome, but for tools i just have my opinel no8, some 80 grit sandpaper and a revlon metal nail file :D
My next step will be to coat the losanges, and to stain the rest of the handle black or very dark.

Wrap sandpaper around something round, a pen if need be, and smooth the notches. Bet it will look great once stained.

I use stain and I dip because stain has a little linseed oil in it normally and it helps seal the inside.

I got my first Opinel, a no.8, from the Garrett Wade catalog about 20 years ago and it is still going strong.
The no.8 is the size I reach for most often but on a whim I ordered a couple larger ones this past week, a 10 and 12, and man the 12 is a monster.

It really has a hefty feel to it and with just a couple swipes on a fine ceramic it is razor sharp.
The 10 is perfect size for me to EDC and just like the 12 it was very sharp out the box.
I am still amazed with the quality that one gets with these knives for such a low price, plus they are easily customized.

Does anybody know if there are any other spear point models other than the garden knife?
I have the garden knife and it is great but I think it is only available in stainless and I would like one in carbon.

I've had an Opinel #8 for a few months now and I love it... great knife.
Great for full prep work and anything else.. nice and light, love the look of it too.

I recently picked up the stainless garden number eight and love it. I love a knife I can pinch open and I also really enjoy the spear point. Normally I do tend to prefer carbon steel but the stainless is quite good in terms of taking a keen edge as well as holding that edge

Are you uploading the image to a place like Photobucket? Then open the page at Photobucket (or other image hosting site) with your image on it and right-click on the image and choose "copy image location" Then come here a paste it (CTRL-V ) into the image box prompt.

ok, here goes
wow, thanks for the help.

Looks like a lot of love for these cheap knives. Anybody got comparison pics with another common knife, like a Sodbuster Jr, Spydie Native, or Mini Grip?

thanks!

They come in about a dozen sizes and in carbon or stainless!

PS I love my grip, but I hardly use it as the blade is too thick. I've been preferring stuff like the opinel over it. In my head the grip is overbuilt and its why I keep it in the emergency stash in the car.

Just got a #5 inox from a local store. Had a nice 'box' of 5,7,8, 10, just in plain birch. It's going ride in my desk drawer after I tighten the friction up a bit. I suppose a small rubber band would be a good addtion for your safety if you wanted to pocket carry it.

You can't beat Opinels and Moras. You just can't, not for the price anyway. If you had a Mora on your belt and an Opinel in your pocket, there's no cutting task that you wouldn't be able to do. They rock!
did someone say opinels and moras?

Hi guys. Should I buy 200 regular Opinels, or one of these?

What a beauty.
Why spend all that money when with these four items and a little magic?

That No. 8 looks slick. Did you paint that first picture or is it some sort of photoshop wizardry?

Thank you gentlemen, glad you liked it. Hardly "wizardry" just a simple digital filter in the camera, mostly useless but I thought it would be fun in this context.
