#OMG - I've turned into that weird Opinel guy....what the heck!!!

If this mod was made on a "Slim", I'd say you turned it in a very sensible and beautiful blade. The Slim's design is just too flexy/pointy to be a real everyday user (except for filleting fish or meat).

Why spend all that money when with these four items and a little magic?

The beechwood ugly duckling is transformed into the Black Swan.

this may sound ridiculous, but I think the stained one is better than the ebony one because as it wears, the light wood will show through around the edges, which will look cool. also, the price difference.

Keepin' the Opie thread going! Here's a nice field pairing! A Garden Opinel and a Classic Mora

What a great pair! The Mora fixed blade and the Opinel folder both minimalist, classic slicers.

Harrison my mod was nothing more than a dye job, I started with a Garden #8 stainless spear, not a slim, the same thickness and no more flexible than the standard.

W.M.D. Thanks, ......yeah "the price difference".... major motivation for me. The "light wood showing around the edges"? It would look cool but I don't expect to see it. Unlike oil stains, MinWax for instance, the alcohol based or water based stains preferred by cabinet makers of old, penetrate deeply.

I'm flattered that you like it CCHU. Here's a pic of a fifteen year old Opie that was given an "onion patina" and stained with Marine Cordovan shoe dye to give it a warmer look. Screwing around with Opinels is just cheap fun!

I'm actually inspired... I had just modified the opi again and put a groove where the nail nick is. After sanding its a different color than the handle.

So its going to give me an excuse to sand the handle down and paint and lacquer a piano key black handle of my own! I'll report back as soon as its done!

Here's mine just got it finished, It has an interior paint finish that I found in my basement, a spray paint clear coat and a light wet sand.

Cool mod!!!!

Thx ^^

So with the help of pinnah's and davek14's comments, i ended up with this.

It's really rough looking because at first I did the carving with an opinel #8, and a fter the stain job i couldn't find it so i had to work with my drifter and then my vic classic. i eventually bought a dremel, but the stain had penetrated too far and i didn't have the best bits for it (i didn't have money left to buy the diamond-tip thingy).

if i had to do it again, which I will when i have the right equipment, i would stain it first then carve it. i would also not butcher the blade like i did (the tip on the other side is messed up, but nothing functional lol). but it's a learning process and i still am happy with it being my first attempt at a mod. soon i will post my garden #8 (that i bought even later) that i just slightly modded compared to this one.

EDIT: I'm quite happy we can't see the scratches on the blade (i'm trying to sharpen on stones, that's damn hard lol)

I'm looking to get an opinel, but not quite sure what size. Seems that no 8 is most popular, and a bunch youtube reviews talk about hand size. I'm more interested in capability vs. size.

Is there a big difference in capability between a no 6 and no 8?

I'd be using this as a general utility knife for garage/woodworking and maybe take it out camping/hiking.

And as my username says, yeah - I've got a Mora HighQ robust, and it would be nice to have something with complimentary attributes.

Huge difference between the 6, 8, 9 & 10.

I have XL glove sized hands. For me...

The 6 is a 3 finger knife similar to a small slip joint. It is smaller than my Ulster Camper or a normal sized SAK. I find the blade to be too small for food prep.

The 8 is a 3 1/2 finger knife; 4 if I choke up on it. The blade is just big enough for food prep and is similar to a paring knife in that regard. It's about the same size as a Buck 112 or many modern folders with 3" blades but feels smaller due to the light weight. If you wear L gloves and want a pocket knife, I would start here.

The 9 is a full 4 finger knife for me and is my prefered carry for that reason. I get frustrated with the 8.

The 10 is a very comfortable 4+ finger hold and is a significant step up in girth. It is as big or bigger than the Buck 110. I think of it as a folding fixed blade or back up to a fixed blade. If you want a robust work knife for back pocket or jacket pocket carry, get the 10.

8, 9 & 10 side by each (9 & 10 are modified)

Hm. Well, I think I'm looking for the smallest model with the lock that can do garage tasks like:

Open packages. Cut through thin rope. Break down cardboard boxes. Whittle down 3/4" rectangular stock wood to a point. Make a cut through a 3/8 round hardwood dowel rod. Maybe quickly carve off the corner of a piece of wood for rough trimming prior to sanding.

Be able to take to a campsite where it can trim branches, perhaps make a few feather sticks for kindling. Help slice open an orange.

I was thinking of something for lighter duty than the mora robust, and a bit more capable than my leatherman wave and SAK climber. Sounds like you're suggesting the number 8 or 9 to me, I was hoping the smaller 6 or 7 would have sufficed.

You know what is funny? I'm generally a huge fan of 3" or under ONLY blades. I don't have any folders with more than a 3" blade.

BUT whenever it comes to Opinels's I love the big ones. I'm a fan of #9 and #10's its exactly as Pinnah said...when you hold it, you almost naturally think of it as a folding fixed blade due to its size and how strong the blade can be!

I generally like smaller knives but the #6 has bladestock just a bit thin for my tastes. The blades get thinner as well as shorter.
