On-line class Edge re-profile/convex your Busse.

Is there any reason that I can't just use the Edge Pro I have to do the edge thining/reprofiling?

Of course you can do that! It is probably faster too! But the whole point to Jim's online sharpening course is to teach freehand sharpening :p

Oh I forgot that....

OK I have an old fashioned wet stone here with a box stand I can use.

I ordered some dia-sharp stones and a holder; they should be here around the end of this week. I've already got some leather and a block.

I also already have a set of the smaller pocket-sized DMT stones from coarse to extra fine, but I see the economy in using the bigger stones.

As I thought, just reading along is valuable. Already learned several things. :)

[Not the least of which ... Cobalt likes toe rings.]

Going to order from sharpeningsupplies.com tonight. I need to pick up the coarse/fine DMT benchstone and a holder. I think between that and my ceramics/waterstones/arkansas stones I should be able to finish/polish the rest. Does that sound about right to you Justabuyer??? BTW I already have 800-1000-1500 wet/dry and a pad. Should I get some 2k paper too?? I will be working on my BATACLE during this class for all interested.

JAB, which coarseness of these are needed and are the stands for these the same as for the paper/leather holders. i guess i'm confused as there seems to be multiple choices in this test

Mister skunk...

In a nut shell we are going to do a edge reprofile. On some Busse Knives since they get so thick out near the tip we are talking a lot of metal to remove.

I strongly suggest a DMT Xcourse 120 Micron. Then a course DMT to clean up the scratches left by the extra course...optional is a 600 grit of so DMT to clean it up more before we move to sandpaper.

No need to buy the finer stones. They are great but this is a convex class and they are not needed. The stones for this class are just to hog off metal.

or buy the whole set you crazy palooza. :D

Do you hand grind those or use a tool?

I use a tool a very BIG tool

Ok, so this is what I was going to buy:

1 - extra course dia 8 inch
1 - course dia 8 inch
1 - fine - 600 dmt
sand paper 1000
sand paper 1500

is this good?

Too bad you can't just use what you have.

I ordered a coarse whetstone from Oregon Abrasives. It is a two sided stone in a wood box for $30.00. I put it on a rubber mat and it doesn’t move around. The stone is 11.5 inches by 2 5/8 ths. I have used the Med/fine stone in the kitchen for years.

I have sand paper in 220, 320, 400 and 600. I need to find some finer grits around. I have a leather strop that is 15 iches by 2.5 that I can use for backing.

I should be ready to go by the weekend.

Perfect. You have a good backing for the leather right?

Tony that should work. I think depending on what knife you choose and how much metal you need to remove the other kids are going to make fun of you.

Thats the problem with public education. There is always some kid that does not have the Air-Jordens and 100 color crayon box.

Your gonna be a stroking fool. :D

I have a small diamond stone I used on a few knives. It took off so much metal it scared me.

About "stroking fool".... kind of like when I use to hit 500 golf balls a day.... makes your stroke real good real fast:thumbup:

Tony,

The waterstones should be fine. Coarse water stones cut faster than most people would imagine. That is because new abrasives are constantly being exposed. For that same reason they also wear fairly fast and in most cases unvenly. Just remember to flatten them often with a flat diamond hone and you should be ok.

The advantage of the diamond hone is that they always stay flat and are a less messy because water is not required.

Your local OSH or Homedepot should carry the 1500 and 2000grit sandpaper.

I think Tony is the type of kid that will be made fun of even if he had Air-Jordans and 100 color crayon box :p
