The only possibility per WordleBot. :)

The current NYT average for this puzzle is 3.9.

10/30/2022: Wordle 498 4/6 WALTZ

16 possibilities after 2nd guess per WordleBot.
7 using the same letter pattern: "___ ATCH."
Arbitrarily chose LATCH to see if it was one of
"those" words or to reduce the possibilities if
it wasn't. Luckily, it was all that was needed. :)

The final NYT average for this puzzle was 4.4.

Twinzies (that's because I've stolen both of your beginning words).

Unrelated, does anyone else just look at the available letters and have "the" answer just pop into your head seemingly out of nowhere? In a non analytical way..

Yup.
I'm hearing that some people use an app that gives them all the possible combinations of any given partial letter set, which I frown mightily upon, as taking the game from an affirmation of accrued vocabulary into the rather boring world of point-and-click

Here's one of them called The Wordle Word Finder.

However, just because it can provide all of the possible words, it doesn't mean you'll pick the "right" word w/in 6 guesses, especially if it's one of "those" words using the same 4 letter pattern that can be changed in 7-8 ways by altering only one letter.

Yeah but you don't use that kind of stuff right? You're our wordle front man and we require righteousness!

Used it a couple of times when I 1st started playing the game to see how it worked and whether it would really help or not.

It helped teach me how to play the game by showing me how to think about letter patterns.and word structure but it didn't help in choosing the "right" word, unless the word was so obvious that you should have been able to figure it out w/o using it in the 1st place.

Check it out on some old puzzles and you'll see what I mean.

Twinzies (that's because I've stolen both of your beginning words).

I experimented with different words when I 1st started playing the game and, while the ones that I use are not considered the best words statistically according to those who understand such things, they work best for me because they reveal all of the vowels in a word along with a few common consonants.

The other approach is to use words based on letter frequency and to start with words like STARE and then vary the 2nd word based on the result of the first with words like PHONY, COULD or DOING which use different vowels and consonants.

I was not successful in trying to use this approach because I found it too random and unintuitive to me but if you're interested you can find an excellent discussion of the approach here: https://www.tomsguide.com/news/best-wordle-start-words

The author of this article rejects the vowel approach because it severely limits the possibility of solving a puzzle in 1 to 2 tries, which is true, but does not address the overall effectiveness of the approach itself.

I've used the same starter words for 290 games. My overall average for those games is 3.63, which is essentially the same as the 3.6 that WordleBot claims it achieves using the letter frequency approach. So, I'd say that both approaches are equally effective but their effectiveness as used by a particular person will depend on how that person's brain works.

I just find it easier solving a word puzzle if I know what all the vowels are, rather than guessing what the vowels are based on the consonants that are revealed. That's why I'm not very good at guessing the words/phrases on "Wheel of Fortune" until some vowels are revealed and I think most people are like that too.

I know what they do. I've had five letters in the correct place on the second guess and still run out my chances with wrong words, but I'd still rather do that on my own than pick them from a list.

I still pick words from a list but it's a list of my own making that I write down on a yellow pad when there seem to be too many possibilities or if the word doesn't just jump out at me.

I find that this also helps keep my scores as low as possible because it eliminates the impluse to enter the 1st word or words that come to mind, since there are no "corrections," "take backs, do overs," or "Mulligans" allowed in Wordle.

Had to pull out paper and pencil for this one. Every word that
I wrote down seemed "wrong" or unlikely but it really came
down to just one.

WordleBot says there were 2. Didn't think of the other word when I saw
it I but knew that I would not have chosen it unless nothing else worked.

The current NYT average for this puzzle is 4.3.

Used paper & pencil for this one too. Tried a variety of words
but this was the only possible answer.

The final NYT average for this puzzle was 3.9.
