Yesterday, after two guesses I had the A in place and the H and the E out of place, but neither could be the last letter.

So A . . . and I just brute forced H and then E and . . . voila!

Like you, today took me five tries. Thought I might get it in two, but no luck. There were just too many possibilities by the third guess, and it took me three tries to guess it (and that is what I was doing at that point: guessing).
 
I'm confused are there different wordles? I have had different words the last couple days. I'm using nyt. Today's was a lucky guess on 3 bc there were so many options!

There are different Wordles (like the one D davidmary sometimes uses) but there is only 1 word list for the original game.

The NYTs has fiddled w/the list and has so far eliminated 2 words from play -- AGORA #241 and PUPAL #245. AROMA which was #242 became #241 and all of the words following PUPAL moved up 1 space stating w/DODGE at #245. So, today's word was #261 but is #259 now.

After the NYT bought Wordle and before it fully moved the game from Wordle.com to it's only HTTP address some people reported AGORA (instead of AROMA which was #242) in Game #241. But I haven't seen any further reports of word discrepancies.

I've avoided "studying" the list (just look for a particular word when there's a reason to do so and ignore the rest) but all of the words (w/the exception of the 2 above) that I've seen so far have matched the list word for word.

This one was problematic but squeak a Bogey 5 out of it.
 
My chess rating has plummeted a hundred points in the last couple days too... Need to refocus.

Same here. Been keeping all of my stats on a spreadsheet.
