On the Road Again with Merle

Yesterday my wife and I took a ride to our oldest son's home in Camillus. After we visited a bit, we took a ride to the village to show Merle a few sights.
My wife is a good sport and joined in the fun, although I'm sure she thinks I'm nuts.
We showed Merle the old Camillus Cutlery factory, which is now loft apartments and retail space.

We took a walk in the village and thought about stopping at the Saloon, but decided against it. The old factory is the sixth building down the street on the left.

Here's a cutlery shop that I've visited a number of times. Unfortunately it's not open on Sundays, so Merle missed spending some time inside. The owner has a very nice Camillus Cutlery Museum inside, as well as a retail shop. He started working at the Cutlery in 1975 and ended up running the Custom Shop. It's worth a stop if you're passing through.

Nine mile creek runs alongside the Cutlery Factory (not shown). I imagine that they took advantage of the creek for some of their processes, at one time.
We left Camillus and took the road to Marcellus, which runs along Nine Mile Creek. It's a pretty nice trout stream that I fish often, as it's about 20 minutes from my house.
We stopped at one of my favorite spots (William's Rapids) to dry fly fish for Brown and Brook trout. I've caught a few Rainbow there too. Merle appreciated the peace and quiet, after the hustle and bustle of the village.

Later yesterday Merle helped me cut up some sirloin steak for dinner. Good job Merle!

Nice shots of Camillus and environs, Gary!! I lived in Syracuse for four years, but saw little of the nearby town of Camillus. Your Pics make me want to go there and see what I missed!! Knice Knife shots!!
Thanks, Charlie! I remember you telling me you attended Le Moyne College in Syracuse. If you come this way you better let me know! :D
I spent some time at Niagara U. , another Catholic University, which is near your old home, Buffalo.

Maybe yo

I attended Niagara while I was stationed at Lockport AFS in the early '70s. I finished up at Syracuse U after I was discharged in '74.
That water in Green Lake is cold in the summer! I can't imagine wanting to jump in there during the winter!

So cool that Merle got to see what was once the old Camillus factory. 🤠

Even better that he got to sit beside that beautiful trout stream. It looks very fishy. 🤠
I'm glad they renovated the old factory, instead of tearing it down. It's nice to see it, even in its repurposed state.
The creek is pretty heavily fished, but still a nice spot, close to home. Since I'm retired I can enjoy it during the week when most folks are working. It's got a decent population of stocked and wild brown trout.
Don't they all?! :D Fantastic pics Gary :)
The woman is a Saint, Jack! ;)

You missed my sister; by then she was gone on to med school.

Green Lake taught me the meaning of cold!!! But we were young and heroic!!

I feel your pain.... I grew up in Lubbock, Tx.... we always said we were right in the middle of the best fishing in Texas.... it was just 3 hours in any direction....

actually, it was likely closer to 4-5 hours....
I’m 3 hours from over crowded mediocre trout fishing…but then again I live in Illinois soā€¦šŸ™„

Awesome photos sir. So today I told my girlfriend that Merle is going to be visiting me for a few weeks soon and that I’m planning on showing him around our favorite spots together with her and catch a few sunsets at the beach and she turned around and gave me the most confused look I’ve ever seen šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ (She definitely thinks I’m nuts)

I tried explaining to her what Merle is, she thought Merle was a knife maker from the forum who is going around the states spending time with forum members that won a giveaway or something 🤣🤣

I explained to her Merle is the forum knife and took mine out of my pocket and showed her, ā€œexcept it’s engraved with the name Merle and he’s visiting all the states and then going international.ā€

Then she told me, ā€œso you’re going to take a knife around to museums and to watch sunsets when you don’t even take meā€ (not true, I take her all the timeā€ loll

She’s a good sport šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Merle will tag along on our adventures

Thanks for showing Merle (and the rest of us) some cutlery history, Gary. I know opinions on this topic vary around here, but I’m glad to see the old Camillus factory utilized for something, rather than being torn down or left to fall apart on its own.

It’s getting to be that time of year here where you need an auger if you want to do any fishing. šŸ™‚

That’s great! 🤣

I think my wife is mostly used to this sort of thing by now. That said, when I was getting out of bed before 6 am on a Saturday last month and she rolled over and asked what I was doing up so early, and I told her I was going to take a pocket knife into downtown Minneapolis to get some pictures with a neon beer sign before the sun came up… well, I couldn’t actually see her roll her eyes, but I could feel it. šŸ™„šŸ˜

I got a good laugh out of these! We are nuts!

Very cool that you live so close to all that knife history (and trout fishing).

You're a lucky man.
Good fishing spots are over an hour away for me.
If you’re not opposed to bass fishing, I’ve got a bass pond a little closer to you on a place we lease. I know it’s not trout, but it can be pretty good. Let me know, I’d love for you to come out once the weather is better.
