Merle had a nice green Christmas here in Syracuse. He'll be on his way to his next stop early next week. I'm hoping he enjoyed his time here.

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone! Merle has arrived safely from his long 2,700 mile journey from Syracuse, NY to Los Angeles, CA just in time to bring in the New Year with me!

I snapped a quick picture of when he arrived then he joined my girlfriend and I to watch ‘West Side Story’, by Steven Spielberg. It was a great film!

After the film, Merle supervised my meat-prep for tomorrow’s NYE BBQ! I think he approved of the spices and rubs that I chose!

Finally what better way to welcome Merle than to help out with Iris’ midnight apple snack! She very much enjoyed his service. (The paper towel on the floor is my attempt at catching her drool)

Happy New Year 2022 to The Porch!

NYE began with Merle and I taking a quick drive to a little gem within the heart of LA, a place called Griffith Park! Griffith Park is located within the mountains surrounded by lush trees, greenery, parks, hiking trails, museums, a golf course, and the LA Zoo! I usually take a quick drive there during the weekends or spend time there with my girlfriend and dog and I had some time to spare on NYE so I showed Merle around a few of my favorite spots.

The LA Zoo was our first stop and it had a lot of visitors for NYE!

The next stop on our quick drive through Griffith Park was at the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round. This vintage Merry-Go-Round located within the heart of the park has faithfully served many generations since being brought to the park in 1937. I have fond memories of my grandfather taking my sister and I here when we were little kids.
What makes the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round such a special please besides the fact it has beautiful paintings, artwork, and vintage horses with some dating back to the 1880’s is the fact that Walt Disney first had the idea of Disneyland sitting on a bench here while his two daughters rode the merry-go-round.

Griffith Park is an absolutely beautiful place and I’ve spent a lot of time there as a kid and as an adult with family, friends, and my significant other. I didn’t have a lot of time to explore everywhere and I’ll be surely going back again so Merle can visit all the other cool spots there.
I took a short walk after visiting the Merry-Go-Round and snapped a few more pics of Merle and the main road in the park that passes through the golf park, it’s a beautiful drive and it was a beautiful day.

For the first day of the year I visited my grandmother and aunt with my girlfriend and enjoyed many of her and my aunts’ home cooked Armenian desserts and meals. Merle really enjoyed himself surrounded by all the yummy dishes! Here was a few of my favorites:

This is called “Borek” (Armenian Spinch and Cheese Turnovers) and my grandmother make it the best!

This dessert is called Kadayif and my grandmother makes this the best as well and it’s a personal favorite of mine.

My girlfriend had to comment on all pictures I was taking with Merle and my uncle was a bit confused as well so I explained to him that Merle is on a trip around the world and he’s visiting Los Angles currently with me. He didn’t quite understand and it was pretty funny.

After the wonderful lunch my girlfriend and I visited our favorite nearest beach to watch sunsets, Will Rogers State Beach. What better way to end the first day of the year than with a beautiful California sunset on the beach listening to Hank Williams, Jr, and lots of other great songs. Looks like Merle enjoyed himself!

My NYE and New Years Day was different than past ones because of Covid this year, not being able to see a lot of my family members or have our traditional first day of the year get togethers. Of course we made the best out of it and the important thing is everyone is in good health.

I hope the first day of the year was great for everyone here on The Porch and I’m wishing everyone has a fantastic year ahead filled with health and love!
