Once I got into fixed-blades... I just don't care about folders...

Chris Reeve Pacific
I definitely still enjoy folders, and carry them more just because they are more discrete and convenient most of the time, but I am enjoying fixed blades and carrying them more. I went hiking today, and before I went I put my Ruike Jager F118 on my belt. I started out on property that I own (not that much, a little over an acre) but I wanted an extra hiking pole, so before I took off, I used the Ruike fixed blade to chop down a small, straight hardwood sapling that made a great hiking stick.

I hiked about 4 miles, then when I got back in the car, I had to stop by a few stores (drug store, grocery store) and I just left my Ruike on my belt until I got home. Even in the car it was not uncomfortable or in my way, I could almost forget I was wearing it. I have been on something of a fixed blade binge lately... have purchased several in just the past month or so.

Nice knives in your photos! What is the one, below? I can't quite make out the logo...

I generally prefer folders just for the convenience and fidget factor. Unless it's in a rural setting most people aren't carrying fixed blades unless it's really small and/or in a pocket sheath.

Guess it's not fashionable to carry big honking blades anymore. Too bad, I like them. So if someone is carrying a fixed blade it's actually usually indistinguishable in use from a good folder.

I mean I guess it provides the user some piece of mind if they're doing some prying, but how many people are engaging in that sort of thing and busting their folders?

Maybe it's just personal preference. I own a whopping 3 FBs. All are 3 inches in the blade, or less. Two, an Izula and a skinner I won here are BF about a decade ago, are in a box of earthquake stuff and camping stuff, respectively.
The one I actually use is the Bita, a $25 CRKT I picked up from Lowe's. It's teeny, but even then I try to use it discreetly, because it is a concealed fixed blade. And, I use it like s folder. I don't abuse it, usually choking up on what little blade there is. It cuts great, and is easy to touch up. It works well for my needs.
That said, I use a pocket knife far more than my one EDC fixed blade, and they're represented in my collection 20 to 1.

Since it's legal in my area to carry fixed blades as long as they are not concealed, I don't mind wearing a fixed blade up to about 4-1/2 inch blade almost anywhere I go. As I stated in a previous post, I carried a Ruike 4.5-inch fixed blade yesterday while I was hiking, then wore it to the drug store and the grocery store after hiking.

Much bigger than 4.5 inch blade though, and it probably wouldn't be as comfortable to wear while driving (I left the Ruike on my belt in the car) and might get some strange looks in the store or other public places. Honestly, I'm more concerned about comfort than I am what people think. I'd prefer that knives were much more commonly seen, so that no one would give them a second thought.

By the numbers, I seem to like folders far more than fixed blades unless you count my kitchen knives, 70 folders, another 10 if you count the multi tools, 20 fixed blades not counting my over 60 kitchen knives
Here are a few of them

How are the sculpted handles on that Winkler in use? I've thought about picking one up someday and worry that the sculpted handle option might give got spots, but I really like it...

I will always like folders since in my state that is all I can carry, but am now finding a new love for fixed blades too!

I made two previous posts in this thread, in which I discussed carrying outdoor fixed blades for hiking, since we've had a little warmer weather here.

Although I carry a folder most days when I don't go hiking or do other outdoor activities, I recently got a small Austin Goldman fixed blade that I have been carrying a day or two each week in place of a folder. Photo above. The overall length is 7.25 inches and the blade length is about 3.25 inches, although the cutting edge is just under 3 inches.

I also have a larger Goldman knife that I use as a bushcraft / camp knife, that I purchased back in 2016. I have had great results using Goldman knives.

My tastes have changed over the years, I currently own more fixed blades. I carry them more often too.

I went on small fixed blade tangent a few years ago and will still pick one up from time to time even though I don't carry them very much.

I did carry this one in NYC since it seemed safer than any folder that could be construed to be a "gravity" knife

I never ended up carrying this one but I still have it, from the first run and not the indie go-go that went way off the tracks

Not to mention the obligatory Izula and Spydie Mule that we are all familiar with.

Forgot about this little Anza, approx 4" total.

That Fairly is lovely

I’ve tried fixed blades in either pocket or neck but they have never been comfortable or practical for me. I just find folder easier to carry and deploy.

Now if I would be in more outdoorsy activities and/or job that would be a different thing but I’m not.
