One Knife For a year...What would it be ?

Is this for edc also stuff?
heavfy tools aloud?

If it was for both edc and woods carry
than hands down victorinox forrester or trekker

if this is a which 1 belt type knife for a year ( but you can have other tools) than I'd pick a mora carbon companion

if it is a survive with only one knife in the woods ? than easy choice kabar bk7

a blade in the 7 inch range is rell a hack of all trades thing

This one has been the only knife in my pocket everyday for the past five years.

The only fixed blade I have carried and used for the past three years is my F1

Just one for everything?

That would be my SAK.

Though these two have covered all my knife needs for years.

Ok, I have been thinking about this a lot since Stan first brought it up and have been testing several knives with some of these thoughts in mind. I've done it before but circumstances were different then. You are meaning literally one knife for one year right? I mean as in this is THE one knife I get to use for a solid year, the one that I prepare food with at home or in the field, the one i use for ALL fire starting needs, the one I carry on me in town at restaurants and stores, and the one I'll have the most chance of having handy if the shit hits the fan and have as both a constructive and defensive tool? Am I clear on this? Because, while there was a time when i was on the same page as Stan, if so my approach is going to be much different than Stan's by necessity because these days I spend a lot of time in urbanized environments, a need for discretion is going to play a major part in my decision.

I'll be honest buddy I spend so much time in sheeple areas that to just carry a med fixed blade at all times would be impossible and would find me in conversation with the local RCMP. For that reason when I do my 6 month challenge I'm going to have to have a small necker for when I can't carry the med fixed.

See, that was my thinking. I was torn between a folder and a necker because I spend so much time in public buildings these days. In the winter I'd definitely rather have a larger knife for shelter and fire prep in the bush but spending years observing the UK laws, spending a lot of time talking to friends there, and seeing where a lot of people in power would like to see things go down here knife wise, I have spent the last couple of years doing in depth studies on what I can do with a knife that is much more discrete than what I would prefer to carry. I'm thinking that if a compact folding saw, with only a saw blade, doesn't count as "another knife" then I am still torn between my HEST, and my fiddleback Hiking Buddy. Both are small and easily stowed away. The HEST spent a year going everywhere I went in an urban environment either on a belt or in my bag just to see how it went. Several officers here know I carry it a lot, hell they've borrowed it, but the Hiking Buddy being dyed-blue box elder burl, spalted 01 steel, and scandi grind is much less menacing visually. I just think I'd rather have the 5/32 saber grind and some blue G10 over the 1/8 and wood given a choice, but I'd go with this one if needs be. It's seen some rough use and handled it just fine.

My first instinct is a Leatherman Surge but that has two blades on it which might actually disqualify it from consideration. My second instinct is a Spyderco Jess Horn sprint run with burgandy FRN scales and a Tom Krein regrind. My third and probably most realistic for a full year would be my Bob Dozier K-35. It is like a really beefy paring knife so it could easily do food prep, hunting chores, and EDC tasks. I would still be forced to use a razor knife at work due to blade length restrictions. :)

Lots of choices here.

My modified BK7.
" " " BK9.
" " " Ontario 12" Machete.
My Tops/Buck CSAR-T fixed blade.
My Tops Alaskan Harpoon.

All of the above choices have very similar features. What one wants/needs varies from person to person. I like fixed blades that have large choils & jimping, so you can also use them for smaller tasks even though they are large. It's hard to use a small knife for large tasks, but if made or modified properly, you can still use a large knife for small tasks.

Alaskan Harpoon eh, I've always had my eye on those, very rarely do you see tthem on the forum !

The only knife I can get by with carrying nonstop is my GEC slippie, SAK, etc... do to laws where I work. I would want something more substantial though for other areas. The dilemma would be going knifeless at work where I spend the majority of the time.

This is why I liked Mentor's one year challenge where he only allowed a fixed blade, edc and multitool for one year. The one knife challenge would be very difficult for me but if I were allowed two knives I could do it I think.

A SAK of some sort is what I've carried daily for the last 7yrs. The only other knife I "really" need is a fish filleting knife, and I certainly don't need that for EDC.

I'd choose a Northwoods #11 for my pocket (though a Fallkniven TK4 or a little Queen Copperhead would strongly compete there)

A fixed is more tricky. I have an Ackerman Serrata, a Shing Heavy kephart, a Fallkniven TK1 and a Kallioniemi puukko (amongst others) that would be difficult to choose between

But in the end I might just ask Guy Stainthorp to make me an Eclipse

I like how a lot of you think; a SAK is definitely all I need. Of course that doesn't allow for much fun in the way of collecting knives. :p

I like big knives, but I would have to choose a 4-4.5 inch belt knife for this.

sak farmer for me been carrying it for more than a year . Sak adventurer before that . Tinker for many years before that. You guys picking big fixed bladed must not have real jobs 7" fixed bladed hanging off a belt doesn't fly many places at work

For an EDC....carry it all day everyday then it would be either my -
1. - MW EDC
2. - ESEE Izula
3. - BK11
If it's only one knife in the woods for 1 year then my choice would be -
1. - JK LOBO
2. - MW SAR5
3. - Breeden Peacemaker
4. - BK9

Plumbrroy, oh our jobs are real. They are just different than yours, we also live in different areas also.

Pitdog,
My choice for one year would be this knife design
IMG_0406-1.jpg

But with only a 7" blade. I do 90% of the cooking for the house hold. My main kitchen blade has a 6" blade lenth and I am really wanting just a little longer for the blade lenght.

This design works just fine for the woods time too. but for one year a 10" blade is more than I want to use for my only knife.

Bryan

Love that one Bryan, if the knife was only for isolated woods/camp use then something like that would be my ideal !!!

OK, around civilization, the ML Kephart Fisher (blade to left of hachet). That is my daily carry belt knife;

Lost in the bush, the ML Hudson Bay (second or third knife from top);

In between, the ML Kephart, or BlindHorse Knives Bushcrafter.
