One Steel to Rule Them All

1084 is fine for my needs.

Z-Wear/CPM CruWear/PD1, 3V,M4
Any type of knife can be made from these grades, from thin to thick, short or long. The toughness is great, wear resistance and edge holding is good enough for someone like me that likes to sharpen all the time. Corrosion resistance is improved over simple carbon steel as well.

One steel for all your knives whether fixed or folder... What would yours be? (If you can't decide between a couple like me, throw em' both in)

I would choose San Mai with a White steel core, or CPM 20cv.

Your Turn!

Sorry. I can no more live with one steel than I can live with one knife.
Different alloys for different uses. (Hint: that's part of the reason knives come in different alloys.)

Of the steels I own it would be CTS204P right now. Looking at testing statistics I think 4V could become my choice, but I won't be sure until I test the MULE 21 when it arrives in a week or 2.

CPM-M4. Doesn't rust nearly as easily as it's made out to, takes and holds an insane edge even on very thin edges, doesn't chip... It's magic. Just keep it dry.

That's the fun in it all! This is not meant to say there is one steel that will work with every single knife on the market, rather for having people share their opinions with the knife community. It's just for fun man so don't be such a smart Alec.

I agree with your statement on CPM-M4. I've had my Gayle Bradley for two years, taken it all over the country, it has sat for long periods of time (lost it for two months) without taking much care at all. No rust.

Cpm 3v for large fixed, Cpm m4 for everything else. But I could be happy with only one or the other. Probably give "the edge" (:D heeheehee) to m4.

I think 4v and cruwear might give those a run for their money, but I haven't been able to try them yet.

Of course, but that's what makes it a fun question.

Anyway, for me, I would be fine with VG-10.

I really like cts, or whatever steel spyderco southard uses. Very tough and keeps a fine edge for a good amount of time.
