Scenario: Thirty days in the Arkansas hill country starting in mid March. You get a firesteel, a cook pot, the clothes on your back and one knife. Which one are you taking???? Oh really?? Why?

I'd like to be a minimalist and say the BK11, but with no change of clothes, fire and shelter is going to be a really big deal. BK7 for ease of fire making and shelter building.

BK2 as well, although I don't understand why we have to be in the ozarks for this little adventure.

BK2. Not much I can't do with it to provide my self shelter, fire, water, and food. Course it would be easier if I had my sheath kit that goes with it.

if i'm limited to becker knives, bk-9 otherwise junglas. from actual experience, it takes a tremendous amount of firewood just to boil water (you didn't say anything about having a hobo stove to increase the burning efficiency) so i'm taking the best chopper i have. add in the need to burn wood for heat and it's going to be rough. 30 days is a long time - i'd easily run out of wood i can gather nearby or i'd have to move camp fairly often or chop.

it took riz_aaroni and i 30 min to get enough firewood to boil a liter of water to give you an idea.

Score so far:

BK2 = 5

BK7 = 3

Interesting.
In the Ozarks you've got large and small game, streams and lakes, hardwoods and conifers, a good mix of choices and opportunities. Mid March through mid April anything can happen weather wise. That knife is going to get a workout on tasks large and small.

Exactly. No stove and 30 days is a long time. Firesteel, knife and a pot. That's it. If you build a substantial shelter and stay put and it turns cold, you're running out of squaw wood in a couple of days. If you stay on the move you're building a lot of shelters, making a lot of traps...etc.

After doing the fork challange with a BK7, I would say BK7 all the way. I feel that I can accomplish quit a bit with blade...

BK7 fo sho! The 7 is lighter, and can do all that the 2 can. Does it excel at everything the 2 does? No, but it's still gonna fit the bill in a "1 knife only" situation!!

i suggest don't listen to us and instead do a day hike to test which knives you're considering before going on that 30-day trip. freezing or close to freezing temps is not a joke. i'm generally suspicious of advice given by others who haven't done anything close to what you're planning to do. if this is a real trip and not just a "what if" question, then i'd say a better crowd to ask would be the w&ss folks - that section is generally good at weeding out wannabe's from those who have actual experience to back up their advice.

It's a "what if" question just for provoking a little thought. It would be fun for a couple of days, but would turn into the ultimate weight loss program pretty quick.

BK 9 , I can do enough of the small stuff with it and also have a good chopper to bushwack or process fire wood. Axe or big knife for me.
