Ontario Utilitac II - Best modern folding knife under $30?

I like the way you do business!

Right?? LOL

Speaking of amazing knives at a sweet price, be sure to check the EDC thread tomorrow. I'll be throwing up a pic of my latest acquisition from a fellow member.

Right on! Also, go back and read my last comment. I edited it with some info for ya.

Awesome. So what do you think of the version you have? I'd imagine it's comfy in hand.

Yeah, it's nice. Good traction too, without being annoyingly aggressive. I'll prolly remove the lanyard though, don't find it necessary and it just gets in the way.

Yeah, I'm still trying out the lanyard. I wanna give it a decent chance before I take it off. Still, I think it's cool Ontario included it.

You might want to give that lanyard a try for a bit. I don't have any other knife with a lanyard on it but since I use this as a work knife, I found the lanyard quite handy to just give a tug to get it out of my pocket or tool bags without looking or any effort. Also, it is a great addition this time of year if I am wearing gloves as I don't have to put any effort into getting the knife into my hand for immediate use.

Just my 0.02...

I don't do much outdoor stuff, so I pretty much only carry knives clipped to my pocket, doesn't take any effort or looking to get it out that way. Don't wear gloves, either...I live in Texas, and like the cold, which we rarely get, heh. I won't even wear a coat if the temperature is above the teens...

Another Texan? Hell yeah!

After having my utilitac II now for a while I've got to say Im not a huge fan of AUS8 steel . I've heard it compared to 440B , I do not agree with that assesment . I find it hard to sharpen , Doesnt hold the edge all that well . That being said like OP said its under 30 bucks . I guess ya get what ya pay for . I do not hate the knife either though .

Just took down a couple boxes for my wife. Finally had a good reason to put some character on this blade :) We'll see how it holds an edge over time, but it's too soon to report.

Whaaa? AUS8 is a breeze to sharpen, takes no effort at all. Seriously man, a lot of people dislike AUS8, mostly because it's edge retention is just okay...but I've never heard ANYONE say it was hard to sharpen before!

And Grownstar, yep, live in Crowley, just a little south of Fort Worth.

Awesome. Good to meet ya, officially. I live waaayyy south. As in 4 hours south of San Antonio.

And then you know, 4 hours away in Texas is "a little down the road".

I'm actually in San Antonio myself!

Back on topic, when I wear gloves they are usually White Mules or similar. I am in construction as I mentioned, and while I don't worry about getting cold down here, I work with concrete roof tiles, set piers, do some hand digging as needed, clean up my job sites, do demolition, etc. as part of my normal course of work.

What steels are you accustomed to? 154CM it is not, but it beats out my CRMOV blades.

Do you have the tanto or the recurve? If you have the recurve, what manner are you sharpening it?

Yeah, I'm night manager at a hotel, so most of my knife use is opening or breaking down mail, boxes and packaging, cutting an occasional zip tie, and sometimes peeling an apple. All light stuff.

I've been to San Antonio once, but it was like 25 years or so ago...I plan on visiting again eventually, but dunno when yet.

Well for cheap knives I really like 8cr13mov its easy as pie to sharpen , takes a wicked edge but doesnt hold it for crap .

I sharpen the AUS 8 with smiths pocket pal and a lansky dry stone

when I sharpen with the smiths I primarily use the diamond stick and the ceramic for like 1 pass to get the burs off . The carbide is worthless as tits on a bull

The lansky stone does an ok job but takes forever to work a useable edge

Also my blade is a trailpoint

I've picked up 3 Utilitac folders recently, and everyone has been slick and well made, a LOT of knife for the price. I was cautious about buying the grooved zytel handled one, because online pictures made it look like the thumbstud might be to close to the handle for a southpaw, which is common with linerlocks, but it's not, I have no problem opening it. I think I still prefer the textured zytel models for their ergonomics though.

Just wanted to give you a shoutout! I got this blade because of your review. So far I'm loving it!

I couldn't agree more! This knife is seriously one of the best budget folders I've ever used.
