Ontario Utilitac II - Best modern folding knife under $30?

Which one did you go for?

I was feeling tacticool, so I went with the black coated tanto(plain edged, not tacticool enough to go combo), rounded handle. If I like it, I'll probably get at least one of the others. Given the materials, these seem like at steal at $25.

I've fallen for 3 of them. Started with the top one with no plans of buying any more...but after carrying it a couple weeks it really impressed me. I came across the bottom one brand new for about $22 shipped and just couldn't pass it up, despite my lack of favor for coated and tanto blades. About a week later the tanto grew on me and I picked up the middle one.

Although they all are great values one thing I will say is I definitely prefer the more rounded handle style. It's much more comfortable and conforming. Take a chance b/c you really can't lose.

How much thinner is the liner recessed on the rounded handle model? Did they compensate for it by moving the liner back towards the spine for the finger swells, or is it just cut thinner? (Spine to liner thickness, not grip to grip.)

I stand by my statement that the COAST FX350 is the BEST sub 30 dollar knife out there today. Might even be the BEST sub 100 dollar folder out there. Simply a superbly made frame lock, g10 handled knife. Excellent grip ergos, steel is better that AUS8a, in that it has 9CR18MV, and it is a frame lock. Simple blade design in a drop point. Uses a liner under the g10. Holds an excellent edge too. I think it is way better than the Bad Blood folders that they market. Ok that's it. Keepem sharp

Thanks longbow, that fx350 is now on my 'budget buy' list.

o4tg, I'll take a couple pics later comparing liners between the 2 different handle types.

Excellent! That blade shape definitely caught my attention. But I wanted to feel that coffin handle before I ordered another variation.

Huh. Apparently the liners are cryo quenched. Maybe that explains why my liner has no measurable wear after literally thousands of flickings. Even my 0350 (thickest liner lock I own) had about a 20% degradation at this point and the assisted opening on it opens slower than I flick my UT2 open.

Edit: Just to show what I mean, here's a picture from when I got it, and what it looks like now. I don't think I've ever had a liner show that kind of longevity.

Hmmm. I don't know that I'll be recommending the rounded handle model anymore for hard use. I was worried they recessed the liner too far for abuse after seeing those pictures, and guess what pops up in my recommended videos on youtube.....

To be fair, this has been one of my concerns of the RAT after seeing torture tests where they broke in this area, and was why I got rid of my Tenascious too. Realistically it doesn't negate function which is by any means normal. I beat the living piss out of my knives so I'm going to stick to the coffin grip since it has a bit more liner depth.

Too long, didn't read: The coffin grip knife is tougher than the palm swell version, but it will make no difference for 99.9999% of users.

Damn, that blows. I'm glad I went with the coffin grip. Admittedly, it was more for looks at the time that I ordered, but I feel better about my decision after seeing that vid. Plus, it just fits into my hand so well that I don't think I'd ever even try the palm swell.

Well here they are. I'd say the contoured version is about 2/3 as wide as the coffin style at its weakest point. I still prefer the feel of the contoured style though. Sometimes I get the feeling I'm not nearly as hard on my folders as some of you are. To each their own.

Yeah... me neither. I use a Kershaw Tremor, a RAT 1, a Junkyard Dog 2, and a Utilitac in rotation for years now as my rough use knives in my construction job. They do everything I don't want to use my smaller, sharper, more traditional knives on.

But since I use them primarily as knives (slicing tools) and not too much prying, scraping, wedging, etc., I have never had a failure.

So Ontario knives told me to watch their Facebook page based on a message I had sent them about Utilitac scale options awhioe back.

They listened. At SHOT this year they're introducing a G10 scaled AND assisted Utilitac, as well as a new Joe Pardue design that looks good to me. They're also putting out assisted RAT's!

Whoa, that's nuts! Pretty awesome looking stuff...now all they need is to make a flipper Utilitac ;)

Here's mine.

Next payday I plan on grabbing the drop point version with the coffin handle, just for variety.

Awesome. So what do you think of the version you have? I'd imagine it's comfy in hand.

Obviously I'm not DShiflet, but I do have that version. I like the grip a lot as it is quite comfortable, and the 4 option carry on the pocket clip allows me to carry it the way I like.

I have fairly large hands, and it is still comfortable for work.

Grown, this knife better rock my socks or I'm coming to your house and like, hacking up some of the bushes out front or something. BELIEVE IT.

(I reaaaaaalllly want mine to get here tomorrow!)

Lol! The jokes on you, buddy! I was doing yardwork all day yesterday :D

And you best believe I'll be anxiously awaiting to hear what you think tomorrow.

Thanks for chiming in, Rob! I appreciate hearing your 2 cents

And here's 1 more pic for my boy Quiet:

Such an awesome knife. You know, looking at my order, I actually apparently ordered the other curved handle style, not the coffin style. Well, I imagine I'll eventually end up with both!!

Well, I imagine I'll eventually end up with both!!

I like the way you do business!

FYI: The action on mine was buttery smooth right out of the box. I was extremely impressed. That being said, I detected the slightest amount of blade play at that tension. All it took was 2 minutes of messing with the pivot and I had zero blade play, as well as the same awesome flipping action. For the price, this knife is smooth!
