Ontario Utilitac II - Best modern folding knife under $30?

I just got mine yesterday (thanks John) and immediately swapped out the back spacer for stand offs and I'm actually on my way now to a little construction project I need a good beater knife for to put it threw its paces. I'll try to get a picture up and a little report if it gets the use I'm expecting.

What was wrong with the back spacer? Or are you just one of those people who just has to mod everything? ;)

Yep... Lol

Here it is with the back spacer removed, it was a little more in depth than on say my BM 710 but it wasn't much more however no factory hardware is usable.

Oh man, that thing looks killer! I actually ordered one a few days ago, couldn't resist all the hype.

Very nice! Come tax season I plan to do the same, add some G10 scales, and Cerakote the blade.

Just checked the tracking number. Mine is in San Antonio. I'll have it in the next couple of days

To be honest the only thing I plan on doing with mine is flicking it open numerous times because it just feels good and makes me feel closer to Rambo. Oh..and opening some of my amazon packages when it's time for it's turn....I have many other knives on a rotation for this grueling task ;)

If you think I am trolling I am not, I am just being honest. I buy knives because I really like them, not because I put them to good use.

Trust me, I can relate. I may view knives as tools but so are hammers, and I sure as heck don't enjoy them as much. What ever tickles your fancy!

I own two, one has the square handle, plain edge uncoated tanto blade, the other is the round handle, plain edge, black coated regular profile blade. They are a hell of a deal at ~$25 each.

There are probably people who collect hammers too! I wonder if there are any genuine hammer folders out there? Or even an out-the-front hammer? There are some Leatherman like hammer tools, but I can't find any genuine hammer folders. Since a hammer is usually used for hammering, though, I'm not sure a folding hammer would be such a great idea. A butterfly hammer might work, though.

Modern is as modern does. The reason Opinel still makes the Opinel and the reason they continue to sell like mad is that they work.

If anybody wants to put a so-called modern up against an Opinel in a hard use bake-off, I have an Opinel pass around going. Happy to see the Opinel busted. Just post pictures and if you have guts, post pictures of you doing the same thing with your preferred "modern" knife.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1097460-Opinel-Pass-Around-amp-Walk-About

I own 3 Opinels, a 7, 8, and 12. The handle on the 8 cracked and broke after owning it for less than 3 months. It wasn't dropped, it wasn't abused, ALL it did was sit in a case. Got it out one day, and as I picked it up, a chunk of the bottom of the handle just fell right off. Ever had that happen with any of your modern knives? I know I haven't. Now, the number 8 is fine, but when I received the number 12, it had several knicks in the blade...haven't had that happen with any of my modern folders either. Also, until Opinel adds 1 handed opening and a pocket clip, they'll never even be considered for my "best folders" list. I like them fine for around the house, cutting fruit, that sort of thing, but for any carry or serious use, a modern folder just leaves them in the dust. And on that note, I'm not a big tanto fan, but I like the looks of the Utilitac pretty well, and for the price, I may well pick one up.

Oh, and I'm not sure I'd use the sales argument, either. Tac-Force stuff apparently sells pretty well too, I don't think the quality has a lot to do with that.

There are multitool hammers around, the hammer head is part of the steel handle, so they do work.

Hahaha oh man! Tac-Force...

I'm man enough to admit I've owned one in my lifetime. Never again!

So my Utilitac was waiting for me when I got home from work. I'm stoked on this thing! Solid lock-up, handle feels great, and this blade is beastly! Also, o4tg was right. Probably the smoothest action out of box as I've ever experienced. I'm gonna love taking this to work tomorrow.

I've fallen for 3 of them. Started with the top one with no plans of buying any more...but after carrying it a couple weeks it really impressed me. I came across the bottom one brand new for about $22 shipped and just couldn't pass it up, despite my lack of favor for coated and tanto blades. About a week later the tanto grew on me and I picked up the middle one.

Although they all are great values one thing I will say is I definitely prefer the more rounded handle style. It's much more comfortable and conforming. Take a chance b/c you really can't lose.

If you guys didn't know (if its not published spec'd or whatever) they have both PB and teflon washers on each side of the blade on these. I found one of my teflon washers was folded in half at assembly so I left them out when doing my stand offs and instead polished the liners and blade.

Now that's interesting! Thanks for the info. Must be why the action is so buttery smooth. Again, your modded 'tac looks awesome and I may just hit you up in the near future ;)
