OOPS!!

WOw that is one beat up package!!! Lesson learned, and hopefully the next one gets there safely!

That is some kind of damage! I would assume that was caught in some sorting machinery, as it appeared to be an envelope with the tube inside. There has to be some sort of automated sorting, logically, based on the sheer numbers involved. Envelopes would tend toward the "envelope and letter" treatment, which would involve more automation in my estimation.

Glad you had a backup plan for the buyer.

I think a little effort with a prybar would render the knife usable, if not beautiful.

Maybe a forum passaround blade in the vein of Earl?

OUCH!!

I have to say, looking at the damage to the knife itself, I don't think a box vs. an envelope would've made much of a difference.

I think that flat envelopes might get sorted differently. See quote below.

"Non-standard mail, like square or vertical envelopes, lumpy or rigid envelopes, or mail with clasps, string, or buttons, cannot use our automated processing machines...."

They would have wrecked a box too. Maybe a steel ammo can would have stood a chance.

A box would have been sorted differently, and never had the chance of being mangled in the machines. This is exactly why the USPS says not to ship lumpy envelopes, and in my opinion is squarely the shippers fault for improper packaging.

That looks like a truck drove over it a couple times, not that it got caught in a belt.

Wow, what a disaster that one is! I have never seen a new knife with that much damage before. It is great that there was a replacement for the customer. :) Hey, look at the bright side Charlie! You could put that one on the auction site as a rare one of a kind TC! Probably bring a grand at least!!

Owwwwcchhaa!
At first glance I thought it was an example of "when filework goes bad!"
Sorting Machine you reckon?
Do they still use the sorti g machinez out 1950 bugs bunny cartoons?
Cue that music they always used to biild up to some impending mechanised disaster.

So has any actual excuse been forthcoming?

Belts move things. Sorters sort things. The post office uses people and machines to sort mail. According to USPS, the machines for sorting envelopes can't handle "lumpy" envelopes. I think it's likely that the lump at the end of the envelope was overlooked and it was accidentally put through the mechanical sorter.

I hope so! :D

No!
Not that!
Not the mechanical sorter!
Naarrrt Thaat...
In the name of humanity
Not the mechanica sorter..

Should we expect a new style of tubes on the next run of TC Barlows?

joking aside, it breaks my heart to see what happened to such a great knife, but I'm very happy to know there was resolution for the customer. Hopefully the USPS will fully cover this.

Ouch! That is really quite shocking Charlie :( "We care"? Hmmm

Good luck with the insurance Charlie, I'll be interested to know if you get on any better than me. Recently, USPS were claiming pocket-knives were on their 'proscribed' list in a claim I made

I'd be interested to know what you folks in the know think about my latest 'shipping plan', and if I can improve on it. I've bought some small hard water-tight plastic containers, (they look a bit like Tupperware, but stiffer, and with 4 flaps, which hold the lid on), rectangular in shape. They'll hold a couple of knives, wrapped in bubble-wrap. The box then goes into a padded envelope, sealed with duct tape, and that envelope goes into a plastic shipping envelope. I'll put the recipients address and my return address on both envelopes, and (for what it's worth - very little in my experience) send them tracked, signed, and insured. Will it work? If not, what could be better?

I'm glad you guys are having fun!! Think of that poor knife!:(
Never to pare one's fingernails, or tighten the screw in one's glasses! Or pry loose the lid on canned peaches. Its future life flashed before its eyes, then happened all at once!!
:D

It was sent by a dealer/friend. I am trying to get it back from him; why? I don't know!!
Shame . . . . . but stuff happens!

I don't blame you for shopping for armour, Jack!
Actually, the only time I have lost a knife, it was in an envelope - has happened twice I think.
Both times the knife squeezed out through a tear, and disappeared.
I hope that Barlow above got its revenge, and broke a few gears and levers!! But it seems it had to be a fork or a truck! Can a sorting machine chew that hard?????
