OOPS!!

Ide like to see someone resurrect the poor thing! Little bit of work and it could be a hard user with a story behind it!

Good luck Charlie, Jack and all, loss in the abyss. If you file an insurance claim, it will be denied. Appeal it and you will usually win. The system is designed to make you go away first, hurdles and hoops. We've shipped hundreds of knives and sheaths though USPS and never had any damage. We always use the padded envelopes but do fold them in half and tape it together that way. So they must be hand sorted.

Our problem has always been theft by USPS employees. We've had 7 knives total stolen as well as a couple of other packages. Even with the Postal Inspectors theft report saying it was theft by an employee the insurance claim is denied. Then paid on appeal. This takes months.

We try to use Fed Ex or UPS as much as possible. We have never had a package stolen by either carrier, however we've had each lose a couple. Never been a knife. The difference is, you have a check from UPS in a week and from Fed Ex in two weeks. Not months later and only one phone call. Not multiple phone calls and mountains of paperwork (literally the last one with USPS the stack of paperwork was over an inch tall). We do have many customers that live on isolated ranches and their only address is a PO Box in town so we do ship USPS cause we have to. Also we've decided that $100 is kind of our cutoff. We'll ship anything around that price or under through the PO just because its cheaper. If ya called me up and said Dave make me a belt, I would ship it to you through the PO. If it didn't arrive, I'd probably just make ya another. I question if I would even go through the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, navigating the morass of a USPS insurance claim for $95.

Sorry Monofletch that has just been our experience over the years. Good luck Charlie and Jack.

This all started when the claim process went national. I use to process claims for our customers.

I will bring all this up at our next meeting. They want us to drum up all this business, but it's hard when the service is lacking in some areas.

Thanks a lot for your words of encouragement Dave, and for sharing your experiences

Is this a new style of delivery? New concept of Air Mail? Looks like delivery by dropping it out of the plane:eek::D:D

You should nail that knife to your post-box as a kind of voodoo fetish:cool:

Bob (the owner and would-be seller) got the knife back, and took some better pics. The knife surprisingly functions perfectly!! Walks and talks just like it should!! Might even be better than new, but that we will never know!!:D

I want to share a different USPS claim experience. I shipped some snowboard boots and bindings home this winter from a trip I took around Christmas. Fully insured. When the package arrived, it looked to have been dropped, and one of the boots and the other binding had been broken from impact. I took pictures, submitted the claim, and it was approved and paid within two weeks. As long as there is insurance, and especially with their sticker owning the damage, it'd be hard for them to deny that claim, I think.

I think it looks pretty cool, actually. I'd carry that thing.

Is the liner damaged? It looks like the covers could be replaced and you'd have a normal knife with some "interesting file work" on the blade.

Wow, the pin wasn't even spared.
You can see where the pin/button was pressed into the wood!

I always prefer bone handles over wood, but this is a great example of where some materials are better under stress. I'm pretty sure bone would not have held up well in this circumstance.

Could be wrong though, and NO, I'm not willing to offer up one of mine for experimentation.:p

I would carry that. I've carried worse.

I don't trust padded envelopes. When I mail a package, I look at this picture and imagine the journey.

That knife needs a story! Eg 'Man Fights Off Grizzly Bear With Barlow Knife!'

The liners are pinched together. Here are some better pics of the mark side. Note the gouges in the steel liner!
The knife still works well, and there is no blade wobble!!

Sign of a well-built knife ;)
