Opinel #8 my "Slim" Collection: Beech, Bubinga, Ebony, Oak, Olive Wood

Holy crow!!! Those are beautiful! I think this will be the post to finally make me pull the trigger and get a Opi. I hate you and Thank you!:D

HAH, sorry but you are welcome!

And yes the Slim models and a few others do come with a highly polished stainless blade and they do their stainless pretty good, takes an incredible edge. Had one guy at work today check the Olivewood out and as he felt the edge he said "wow, did it come this sharp ???" always makes me smile and I said nope, a little work and now she's fine.

And Sarah, nice stuff there and thanks for the compliment, had that set in my head how I wanted to capture the contrasting handles and symmetry of the shapes, all was going well until I sprung a leak, then my enthusiasm kinda dropped off...a LOT haha but it's healing fine, a super sharp edge as thin as these will make such a clean cut it should heal up fast.

I really need some more.

I just have one beechwood #7 with carbon blade, and slimmer handle.

I accidentally sliced my self with mine cutting fishing line, right before I had to go to a ranch and wrangle about 250 calves to brand, cut, band, tag, and inject. Made for a bit of an annoyance when I was out working the cows.

I want an Ebony #8, and a few more!

I was curious also about the shine on the blades - is that characteristic of the stainless steel? I like the idea of the carbon blade as has been recommended a lot in this thread, but the shine of the SS sure catches my eye!

It's just on a few of the knives they go the high polished route, here's a shot of my #8 Garden knife

and my #8 Ebony, this one I paid a little more for this engraving on there, did an excellent job!

I've heard tell the plastic handled ones are not as good? blades are thicker, for 'Adventurer's ' and the like dunno but I do like the wood ones a lot.

Thanks you Gary - I was assuming that all the stainless blades had that shine.

I have to get one of these ordered and in my hands. I like the carbon steel and like the olive wood. Looks like I will have to opt for one or the other as that combination isn't available as far as I have looked.

There's been discussion over the steels they use, one person was a die hard Carbone fan, until he tried their stainless and was sold on it after that. Now that I have both, a couple of #6's and a #12...that's a BIG folder ;) and personally the stainless here works fine and gets amazingly sharp and I do like sharp!
So I'd not be put off on getting one of their Inox models myself at all.

for those with a larger screen...

Thanks for you input on the blade materials Gary.

And you last pic only fills 1/2 my screen horizontally so no worries here!

You're welcome, was looking for the post about the conversation between Carbone and Inox but didn't find it to link it, but there are several threads regarding Opinel's and I give them a healthy thumbs up!

My shaky understanding is that the Sanvik Inox is somewhat similar to 420hc but with the reputation for being very pure. They harden it to around 58rc which is the same target for Bucks 420hc. I've used Bucks quite a bit and can't tell the difference but I've only been using my Inox for a month.

The Carbone is softer and tougher. Target hardness is 56rc as I understand it. I've dented blades using them roughly but not chipped them. I sharpen my carbones at 25 degrees and my Inox at 20. I like the Carbone for rough work and the Inox for EDC or wet use.

Thanks, good info there! and the fingers about healed up already, thanks to the VERY sharp clean cut ;)

hehe yep, it took me by surprise, wasn't overjoyed that's for sure!

Took the #8 Slim Olivewood with me to dinner last night, our daughter gave us a gift card to Olive Garden, seemed appropriate ;) and it sliced up the jalapeno's in the salad nicely, very classy folder!

Bumping an older thread up, as I just added to my extinguished collection :( the Ebony and Olivewood have parted ways, have a PM to see if I might be able to wrangle them back since getting this Bubinga handled one, reminded me how cool they were, so I also ordered the Beech wood one and it'd be great to get the other two back, I'd have just about the full range of the #8 Slims, they make a horn model but at almost $150 for that, I can live without it...:)

Here's that Bubinga one I just got, sharpened up exceptionally well, cut up the peach I had this morning nicely too ;)

and a shot of it next to my #13 which is a monster of a folder and yet I use it more than I thought I would !

and unfortunately, that comprises my Opinel collection right now, things you need to do sometimes,

yep it's hit or miss sometimes with the character in these, the one I have does show a lot, so that's lucky!
