Opinel #8 my "Slim" Collection: Beech, Bubinga, Ebony, Oak, Olive Wood

That's a #8 Slim model, the larger #13 is beech wood, just in for flavour and because it's big ;)

NICE looking Opinels you have there, Gary. I have the standard #8 in Olive, and though it's not quite the looker that your #6 is, it sure is a looker. The Opinel marking on the Olive one came off pretty easily compared to the beech ones, but it was one of my first so it may just be showing age more than anything. I don't mean to feed your addiction, :D , but go take a look on the Opinel site and check out the #6 in rosewood that's there. Made me drool when I saw it.

aye that is a beauty, right now of course, they're sold out ;) but just as well, as I will focus on just the #8 slims for now.

I have a #10 Slim Bubinga and find it makes a nice bird & trout (& fruit) knife. I have been thinking about getting a #12 Slim in Olive Wood.

Gray, nice bunch of Opinels you have. The last couple of months I have been on the Opinel kick and i am now up to 17. Got one of the slim ones of the bay a couple of days ago, so it isn't here yet. I got a No. 10 with (I think) beechwood.

Well I will be getting my Ebony and Olive wood back and will get a family photo taken at that time, can't afford that horn model, looks nice though! Here's a shot of the Bubinga

Edited to add, the Beech handled one arrived today, handle looks great, and on the standard beech models, the blades are not highly polished, which is ok too, fits the more traditional hard working Beech wood handled Opinel's a nice addition to my "Slim" collection, pardon the pun ;)

I just got my Ebony and Olive wood handled #8 slims back from the fellow I sold them to last year, which made me happy, back then it made me sad but I needed the funds at the time. When and if they produce different wood handled versions of this size Slim, I plan to pick those up as well.

Left to Right, Bubinga, Olive wood, Ebony and Beech, the first three have highly polished blades, the Beech is a satin brushed finished more like the standard Opinels have.

The setup to take the photo was a simple one, well except you are playing dominos with razor blades!!! they fell over a couple times in the process, you DO NOT try to stop the fall, those points would pierce you so quickly! They are resting on top of an old slide viewer box, I made a bridge out of a large priority mail box with a sheet of paper to throw light back down to the knives and held a sheet off to the left to light up the blades, camera was on a tripod. Quick and easy setup really, just dangerous ;)

Those are some enviable Opinels Gary! I have to admit to just a teeny bit of jealousy. I have a few, but not the nicer wood ones. I love my #8 (carbon) #8 garden knife. They're part of my stress relieving apple eating ritual at work. When the statistics are driving me crazy it's nice to pick up the apple, cut slices off with an Opinel and munch on them while day dreaming of simpler things :)

Great pics, Gary. I don't have an Opinel in my collection and the slim #8s look really nice. I'll have to try one.

Gary, I believe that your slim on the far right is Oak not Beech. They all look great. The N0. 10 I "won" was a Bubinga not a Beech one.

That'd be neat if it was, ordered on Amazon as a Beech wood, I don't see an oak available to buy on Opinel's site but the grain doesn't look like beech

Thanks sir, photography is my other passion, runs neck and neck with knives ;)

and the question mark Beech ;) I think you are right about it being Oak, the grain sure looks like oak!

Well I sent the crop of the Beech one to Opinel and they replied back:

Hi Gary! You received a very pretty beechwood model, not a oak. The oak has a very tight grain with a consistent darker color.

So that's good to know, also heard that they might be coming out with an Oak and Cheery next month in the #8 Slim models, so I hope to snag one of each for my 'Slim' collection ;)

Okay if they say so. The ones I have that are Beechwood are all very light wood. It is a very nice looking one.

yep, can't argue with the folks that sell them, plus I don't find where you can even order a #8 Slim yet in Oak, but he said they might be on their site next month, so you know I'll be checking on that!

I emailed them again and they confirmed they are coming soon, but not yet :( so in the mean time, here's a shot of my best bud Shrek carrying around my Olivewood Slim #8
