Opinel #8 my "Slim" Collection: Beech, Bubinga, Ebony, Oak, Olive Wood

Got in a 15 slim Beechwood (used) and a 10 slim Walnut (new). Pictures to follow. I guess I will have to find some thing around the house for a pose. Really like the Shrek pose, don't know if he could pick up the 15.

I didn't look for a pose item. But I did take the picture of the 15 Beechwood and the 10 Walnut together. I guess next I should take a picture of all my effiles in one picture but not until I clean up the 15. I believe it is an old one as it doesn't have a lock close feature.

That 15 is pretty large!
well they just got in some new woods

Ordered the following two, it'll be my first #10 interested to see how that handles!

Opinel Slim # 8 Oak Wood Handle

Opinel Slim # 10 Cherry Wood Handle

Cannot wait for your pictures. I am trying to shine up the blade on the 15. I doubt it was a mirror finish like the new ones. Think you will like the 10.

I am also looking forward to handling that #10, sliced up a Subway sub tonight with the Olive wood #8, but it would have been nice to have a blade that was just a little bit longer ;)

Arrived today, the Oak is very very similar to the Beech wood one I have, and to note that both of them have the coarse finish on the blades, these did not get the mirror polished blades. Also on the Oak, as did a few other regular Opinels I've received, the back side of the tang needed some filing down so that the blade was straighter when viewed from the side, so the transition flows better, didn't take much, used a small grinding wheel on my dremel and all is good, but a warning, do this at your own peril, TOO much taken off can make not lock closed as well, which isn't too much of a concern.

Now the #10, the Cherry Wood handle, not a lot of character in the wood and the blade is also the coarse finish too. The tip of was exposed when closed, so I had to take a small Case Tuxedo and continue the channel just a little bit more so the blade would drop down and keep the tip....and me ;) ....better protected.

The #10 is much larger than the #8, enough that I think one will suffice for the time being, although I may sell this one and pick up a Bubinga one for my collection. I can see the longer blade being handy on certain things, like that sub the other night, that would have worked a lot better, but the #8 did ok too.

I'll get some photos up when I can.

I really like the mirror finish on the blades of the Effiles. Got spoiled with the first three I got. The 15 is not mirror finish but with some fine grit sandpaper it looks a lot better. I also had to sharpen it and with my Lansky I had to move the clamp to two places finish the blade.

They do look like a tough one for sure. Here's a quick pick of my Cherry wood Slim #10 got her up forsale as I do want the mirror polished blade if I'm just going to have one in the collection, and edbeau you were right, I do like it, fits the hand comfortably but the longer blade says I probably wouldn't use it as often as I do the Slim #8's

I guess I will have to get an 8 next. Took a picture of my Effiles Collection and my Olive and Bubinga in their sleeves.

Those look great !! nice collection right there!

Here's a couple shots taken tonight of the Cherry wood along side the Oak, you can see the Oak looks a little like the Beech I have;

and one of just the Slim #10 in Cherry wood, moving this one along and will fill it's spot with an Olive wood version soon;

Gary, I like the mirror finish blades myself. The oak looks good and remember I thought the beech was oak. Cherry wood is kinda so so. Olive wood is better!

Yep, I had to email them because it didn't look like beech to me either, but for some reason, that Oak has something about it, took it to work today and really liked it, nice feeling and boy does she cut too, wicked edge it took.

And the Cherry wood, yeah that's why I have it up forsale, nice but if I'm going to have a #10 in the collection, it needs to be a little more, hope someone buys that Cherry one, she's VERY sharp as well, at least she is now ;)

Olive wood #10 arrived today, very nice too, needs sharpened, but, that's typical so not to be too concerned if you buy one and you have to sharpen it. I do like it a lot more than the Cherry wood one, not only for the polished blade, but the wood has a little character within which makes it interesting too.

I may end up with both in my collection as the Cherry wood is waning away in the forsale section...no interest yet, seems odd but then, I'm a little odd too so I have to take that into consideration ;)

I'll get some photos up of the #10 Olive wood when I can.

here's a shot of the Olive wood one, tried her out on a Subway sub, I like to slice the sub up into finger width sections, less mess that way, plus gives me something to cut up too and this longer blade was just the ticket!

Nice looking wood on that knife, Gary! Nice picture, looks great with the dark background. Need to do that with my pictures.

Back again with my latest, a No. 10 with Beechwood. Has the older markings and no close lock. Came with a plastic case and it is unused.
