Opinel mods

Mykel, you make me want to do more work on mine. Fun to work on aren't they.

I guess I haven't put this pic up here yet of my Opi family:

Just a question - looks like some of you have had great success modding the opinel blades. What tools are you using? I have modded several handles, but would like to make a stout sheepsfoot with locking ring. Would be my first attempt at modding a blade. Ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks

Here's a link to a thread in the workshop forum.

I modified a few, and if you read further, a few other members post some of their mods, as well.

I use a combo of carbide hacksaw blades (the round ones, the flat metal ones with the carbide edges don't seem to work as well for me), files, and my 1x30 belt sander. Never thought of bolt cutters, but it looks easy. I'll try mine the next time I mod one.

Cool. Thanks for an additional suggestion. Your method was what I envisioned, but I also like the bolt cutter idea.

I just want to caution everyone, if you do use bolt cutters: Before cutting I put a canvas bag over the blade. One time I didn't get the bag over it in time, and the broken blade tip flew about thirty feet from my porch into the middle of the street.

That's a beauty Tinbasher, exactly what I have been wanting to do also.

I imagine in grinding the pin down to get it out it gets shortened some & isn't reusable so what did you use for a new pin & what did you cut the groove with?

Hello Opinel modders. After reading all pages of this thread I decided to buy my first Opinel N0.10. And here is my humble attempt at modding. I first changed the handle shape, added some cow bone finish piece, made a lanyard hole and painted matte black. Then put the diamond knot lanyard on. All made by myself. Now, the question is: should I modify the blade too ? Comments and advices are welcome. Thank you.

The blade looks nicer un-modded and works better as a little more of a drop point.

Your mod doesn't change the shape much (a good thing), yet changes the appearance a lot. I like it, it's very nice.

How did you attach the bone?

You may find adding an easy open notch desirable for next time.

Thank you, davek14. The bone part is attached by bi-component resin glueing and secured with a recessed screw and a drop of transparent glue on top of it. Glad you like it !

Didn't do any mods to my #8 Carbon I picked up in Paris this spring (8.50 Euros) except to melt some hard floor wax into the handle slot and pivot with a heat gun. That has kept the wood from swelling and binding the blade. Cuts like a scalpel. Maybe better.

I got this knife a long time ago at a yard sale for two dollars. The tip was broken and the handle cracked. I reshaped it as little as possible and used it a fair amount.

Then I decided, upon seeing so many cool Opinel mods, to mod mine.

Thanks for looking.
