OT- Best .45?

All roads lead to H&K or Glock. But it will come down to what you like. Post your pick!

I just wandered over to ye olde local gunshop and pawed a new Sig 220 they had there, compared it to a bunch of Kimbers they had in stock. I'm leaning towards the Sig- it's very nice. It has a great trigger, was comfortable in the hand, has nice sights, easy to reach controls, and looks pretty cool to boot.

Now I just have to figure out how to nab it without the wife getting angry. They should have jewelry stores right next to gun shops, so guys can buy guns and something shiny to distract their wives with, at the same time.

OK... too much talk... not enough porn! ;)

This one may be my favorite... as stated previously, I have much more expensive .45's, but I just love this one. It is Busse-like in the respect that EVERYONE who handled it has wanted to but it! Some things just aren't for sale.

She ain't as pretty as she used to be but she is still beautiful to me. :D

Can't go wrong there:thumbup:

AR Bunker has a shat load of em at great prices. They seem to have the best prices when there set up at the Matt Eastman show at North Atlanta trade center. There also a SIG Amoror and give all Sigs(new or used) a lifetime warranty.

I would try to find a good series 70 or earlier Colt.

Get a user that is known to be reliable, then save a little and have it tuned by a good smith.

If you do it right you will end up with a super reliable pistol that will shoot better than you do.

Just don't go super fancy and you will be all right.

Stainless looks pretty but I would go with regular steel. If you are in a high humidity area, just add the cost of a hard chrome refinish to the budget.

FWIW, when I bought my first pistol years ago (10?) I first went to my local range and went through 50-100 rounds in each of 5 or 6 different guns. A 1911 (.45), a pair of Glocks (a 22 and I believe a 23--though I might've swapped that for a 27), an H&K (think it was a USP?), and a Sig. All the plastic was in .40 S&W.

End story, I bought a Glock 22 that day. I needed something simple, dead-nuts reliable, and hi-cap. The ONLY gun that had any issues that day was the Sig. Multiple FTEs. I know a sample size of one does not a distribution make, but considering the fact that all the guns I rented were equally beaten up, it put me off Sig and I haven't shot one since.

After 10's of thousands of rounds the Glock had one FTE on a crappy reload that I limp-wristed. My Kimber has had one FTE on a 30-year-old crappy reload.

Yes, I wind up with lots of crappy reloads...have to save the rest of the world from using them! No, I don't do my own reloads.

I orginally thought you were asking about a 1911. If your willing to consider a polymer gun, you can't go wrong with a 5" Springfield XD. I had a 4" and a 5" both great guns, super reliable, and much softer recoil than any other .45 I've ever shot, especially the 5". I used both for a season of IDPA and only malfunctions I had were with a friend's lead semi wad cutters and 1 bad primer with some factory ammo. Hard to beat 13+1, as well. My next polymer .45 will probably be an M&P, just because I haven't tried one yet. If you have large hands, you might like a Glock 21, also super reliable and much easier to tinker with than the XD from what I've heard (i.e 3.5lb triggers, etc.) I had one of those for about a year as well:) Can you tell I like just about anything in .45acp .45:D

you know... i hate to be critical of anyone's chosen gun. It is kind of like calling a man's wife ugly! Guys get pretty offended when you talk about their girl or their gear.

That being said, the least reliable gun I ever owned was a Sig p228. I realize that I may have bought a "bad" one, and have talked to many people who swear by their Sigs, but I had bad luck with mine. :grumpy:

I own or have owned S&W's, HK's, Colt's, Kimber, Baer, Wilson, AMT, Browning, Beretta, several Glocks, Kel-tec, and maybe a couple others I cannot remember. Generally, I have had very good luck with reliability in all of them... with the exception of the SIG.

I've noticed a ton of SIG's (more than others) on the resale market as well, and I have to wonder why so many people want to sell them.

Just food for thought...

Now... off to put on my flame-proof suit! :D and remember... I am not calling your wife ugly:D:D:D.

regarding 1911's, i can offer this review:

1: they are wonderful guns. but are high maintenance, especially compared to something like a glock.

2: i carry a kimber warrior, series 70. over 5000 rounds fired. the malfunctions i have had have been mostly magazine related. get quality mags, i like the wilson combats. the plastic follower seems to be the most consistent in feeding.

a: exception: my sear wore at an angle, and i was getting a full auto effect. replaced with a wilson combat sear.

b: i have replaced my recoil spring once, as recommended.

3: kimber's quality control is not the best. every kimber we have seen come through required minor gunsmithing to guarantee reliability. two needed plunger springs replaced right out of the box. the custom shop models are better, but still needed some work.

same thing happened with a springfield armory loaded.

4: my colt defender was far more reliable out of the box than virtually all of the kimbers and springfields we have seen.

5: the most reliable 1911 i have ever seen is a wilson combat cqb, carried by one of our sergeants. the only malfunction i have seen was induced, a very dirty gun and severe "limp wristing".

6: if replacement parts are needed, use factory spec parts. dont put in springs heavier or lighter than recommended.

7: after tuning, they are as reliable as any other auto. eventually every gun malfunctions.

The Colt Series 70 Repro is sweet for a good price....if you could get one in Cali I DEFINITELY would....I got an XSE which is a series 80...I know many people don't like the 80's but I have yet to find anything I don't like about it! Trigger pull is great even though apparently that's what people DON'T like about it :p. Also, the Springfields look sweet, I've owned one and loved it...just had to get that pony on the slide though :D. I think you probably get a bigger bang for your buck with the springer though to be honest. I don't know about Kimber...I know I'll probably get crucified for saying this, but I've been told by guys with cases full of Kimber that Colt's and Springers are better quality when they don't have many Springers or ANY Colt's in stock....they always say the Kimber's have more MIM parts and cast while S and C's are largely made of forged parts....I really don't have any proof or grounds for that statement and it's not mine...just what I've been told by multiple parties....I hear nothing but good things about Kimber USERS though :D so I guess that's what counts. I've got to say...they ARE attractive guns!!

I know it's not a 1911, but I want the S&W Mountain Gun .45LC :D that thing looks sweet!

Steel everywhere! Mr. Rightwing---- is that an H&K 91?! You gots a nice collection!

I have had this one for appr 5 yrs and shoot every month- no problems.

It is a little large if you have small game warden hands, but it matches the FFBM better that way.

HK USP tact all the way!1:thumbup:

My Les Baer= making .45 dia. cloverleafs at 25 yards.

My Glock 21SF= carried for my protection

$1200= G21SF + G30SF + ammo

Kimber fan here. Mine is a first year production, with over 12,000 rounds through, never jammed. The only thing I replaced was the trigger because it had a plastic one. I use McCormick power mags in it.

Did someone say gun porn? Here are four of my favorites. Ruger New Vaquero in .357, S&W .44 magnum, Kimber .45, and my grandfather`s old S&W Model 15 .38 that he carried as police chief in the early 1960`s.
