OT- Best .45?

Very true, Mark, re: the decocking lever. One reason I traded my P9s for a G-17.

But the P9S used that lever for both cocking AND decocking. It was much more versatile.

They are also fantastic shooters.

h&k definitely has always been on the cutting edge of technology.

first mass produced polymer handgun, d.r.l.b.s., factory sound dampening, squeeze cocker, etc.

and ive always liked the usp series.

Honestly, HK hasn't been good to me either. I had issues with their USP. I like old HK, the P7 is amazing, the G3 is a tank. I think they have some issues to work out with their new products.

Also, they dont like the civilian market.

Has anyone suggested Para-Ordnance yet? They make 1911s - high-capacity ones, double-action ones, tiny ones, and in all three bread-and-butter cartridges.
They're at the top of my list right now; wonderful guns to shoot. Some of the tiny 1911s hold 10+1 rounds of .45, but they're scarcely larger than a Glock 26, and smaller than a Glock 30. (Not lighter, though; they are 1911s. This is not necessarily a bad thing.)

thier single action models seem to be fine guns. you are talking about the warthog, the little double stack model. its kinda boxy, but no more so than the glocks.

the lda is also a fine shooter, but i feel the trigger mechanism is a bit fragile for a "combat" handgun. target or ispc is fine, but the parts are too small and thin imo.

Here's something I don't think anyone has suggested: buy the one that feels best to you. Most any brand name pistol will be reliable. Every pistol has it's quirks, and some don't like certain ammo....but you don't know that until you buy it and try it. Just because I like a certain pistol doesn't mean it will feel good to you.

Some of it is hit and miss. I've owned 2 Glocks (19 and 21) and a HK USP and sold all of them because I didn't like the way they felt in my hand. They felt fine at the store, but a few magazines in the woods changed my mind. If you can find a range where you can rent different pistols it might be money well spent.

Of course there are only two kinds of pistols, 1911s and everything else. :D In the 1911 field, the best value for the money by far are Kimbers.

Steel everywhere! Mr. Rightwing---- is that an H&K 91?! You gots a nice collection!

THANKS! That one happens to be a JLD PTR-91. Love it, but I also have a HK 43.

Side note on Sigs: Get the German built ones, or, if god is smiling on you, a Swiss made one. The American models have MORE not alot, but more problems than the Eurotrash models.

As for me, Im yet to reach my Valhallah. I want a Sig p210.:)

Yeah, I have wanted one of those for many years, now there very hard to find and have gone way up in price:(

I still say go with the Sig 220 or HK. And the AR Bunker where you live has great prices and is a Sig armoror. Don't think you would EVER have a problem with it, but it's nice to know a certified Sig Armoror is in your town.

Understandable considering the import hoopla after the assault rifle ban. If they can do just fine in europe why bother here. Sig is the same way (to a lesser degree). That's their attitude and it isn't likely to change anytime soon :grumpy:

The Glock 21 is the softest shooting .45 I have encountered. Its a pleasure to shoot. The downside to the standard flavor is that the grip is as big as a drain pipe, so I would be interested in trying the SF or whatever its called with the reduced grip. And its a big gun for IWB carry, but it can be done.

I've been real happy with my Kimber Target model–the all black one. I've shot matches with it and it's pretty darn accurate.

There are a lot of great 45 ACP handguns out there, but if you don't own a 1911 style handgun yet, you owe it to yourself to buy atleast one. You will fall in love with it's trigger if nothing else. My Sig 229 with a custom Bar-Sto barrel is more accurate, my Glock is probably tougher, and my S&W revolvers are more powerful, but my 1911's are my favorite.

You could look into the used Pistol market. I picked up a used Springfield "Standard" model that was made in Febuary of 84. Shoots beatifully and is really reliable. The pistol is almost identical to the current model PX9109LP Loaded Full Size but I got mine for way less.

As others have said, rent the pistols and see which you like. I found I liked the Springfields and got one at a great price. Was actually looking at getting an XD in .40 S&W or 9mm when I came acrost the deal. Some day I'll get an XD cause I like them a lot. More so then the Glocks I've shot.

Have fun and please let us know what you deside. :)

The H&K P9s was also the most accurate pistol I ever shot. The groups were unbelievably close, consistently. The G-17 is just, overall, more of what I want in a pistol. The P9s is one of the Cream of the Crop.

I should have taken Lundes advice and stayed away from the Sig 1911, if you want a Sig in .45 get a 220st one of my favorites.

I know it's blasphemous to admit it, but I like my SIG 220 a lot more than the 1911s I've owned.

THE TRS!!!!!! THE NEXT GUN I'M BUYING!!! HOW DO YOU LIKE IT?!?!?!?!

The TRS is everything you would expect it to be. If small clovers are your thing, you will love it. Great fit and finish super accurate... you will love it. Buy it... NO REGRETS! :D
