OT/ Rifle Reccomendation

Many have proven themselves on the long range market such as 6.5 BBr

I am a meet and potatoes guy and like to stick to fairly commen rounds like 233 and 308 in assult type rifles and of the two I greatly prefer 308

I have many long range rigs and especially a little suppressed rig that I very much enjoy in 308 and I like being able to run the same loads in my bolt actions and semi autos like the Socom and my Galil

If you are not familiar with a Galil that is IMHO the finest AK variant out there with a machined riser vs the cheap stamped on of most AK's

Problem is they are going for 5000 + these days in some markets

man I like the looks of a galil.

I like a bigger bullet than a .223. even if I was to ever get into the AR platform it would likely be 7.62x39.

AR platform in either 5.56 or 7.62. There is nothing better. I got rid of all my FAL's, M14's and HK-91's. Spare parts will always be available even when the doors close. It does not suffer from frame battering like all the other platforms. It has the lightest cycling action of all, since it does not have a piston's weight, and properly lubed runs forever. 556 and 762 are american made so they should be around as well. Russian calibers can easily dry up.

I have to say, get a s&w MP15 sport and use the rest for a good optic and whatever part you would like to change. I have a sport with a eotech 512, troy rails, troy flip up sights, grip pod, eotech magnifier, magpul stock, magpul Moe grip, magpul vertical grip and a bcm bolt. I have not had one single issue with it so far and have used it on numerous pig hunts. I'm planning on putting a suppressor on it. Also if you want a true hog killing round, but the sport and buy a rock river arms 458 socom upper and it will knock down any hog. I didn't get a m1a because I had heard that they are only assembled in the USA.

Just my .02's.

^^^ A local store got 100 sports in yesterday and line was longer than that before they opened! :grumpy:

Where to get a gun is the question to me right now. :grumpy::grumpy::grumpy:

I agree. I work part time in a gunshop and when a customer comes in the shop with the needs similar to the OP, I generally recommend sticking with .223/5.56 or .308/7.62x51. Assuming we don't have restrictive ammo legislation, 50 years from now those calibers will still be available. There are countless options in factory ammo, from "cheap" plinking rounds to match grade, light grain to heavy and everything in between. If it was ammo fielded by the US military, it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Just look at 30.06. Over a 100 years old and can be found (current hysteria/ panic buying excluded) in any gunshop or big chain store in the US. All the abundant Russian surplus ammo that is (was) on the market is only a legislative penstroke away from availability. Domestic manufactured ammo in 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 is expensive.

I've owned just about every type of military style firearm over the years and have settled on an AR in 5.56 for a carbine and an M14SA (LRB) for a battlerifle.

AKs are what they are and years ago their price drove their sales. But with cost of AKs rising and the cost of ARs lowering, I couldn't see why a buyer wouldn't just "upgrade" to an AR. (again, think pre-hysteria prices.)

I shelled out the cash for a DSA 16" but was VERY disappointed with the accuracy out of it's non-chromed line bore and chamber, attributes that I also find disappointing in a "battle rifle." Mags for the FAL used to be cheap and abundant a couple years ago, but even before the panic buying the supply was drying up and mag cost had leveled to the cost of USGI spec M14 mags. That is when you could find them, as I knew of no new manufacturer of FAL mags, unlike the M14. (DSA kept saying they were in the works, but I never saw any actually released on the market.)

The AR10 platform is arguably the way to go as it offers superior ergonomics and out-of-the-box accuracy over the other .308/7.62x51 "battle rifles" on the current market.

That is the best looking FN I have ever seen. That wood furniture is beautiful. You have just enough wear to almost make it look comfortable.....In writing that I just realized that might sound strange to a non gun person. Whatever, looks great!

FALs are truly fun to own.

Any other enthusiast Out there?

If your area is anything like around were I am, I think it is going to be very hard to find any semi-auto rifle in any caliber other than .22LR. You might find something, but no shops around here have any rifles. One shop I went to sold all their AR"s(35 total), in the first three days after the shooting. I looked around online and all the big stores where sold out. But back to your question, I think a good choice would be any of the common brand AR-15's. I love M1A's, but .308 ammo is very expensive.

I am keeping a few Ar 15s around because I figure they will be the easiest for the wife and the kids (in a few years). As for me, not sure exactly which one I would grab. The Ar platform is great but so is the M1a, Fal, and the Ak. At this point the best advice may be to just get whatever you can find available. That seems to be the trick lately.

A couple of things to keep in mind when considering 5.56 vs 7.62. Follow up out of a 5.56 is faster than a 7.62, unless you are willing to spend more money. Also, if you happen to pick up an AK in 5.56, the magazines are difficult to find, at least the good ones are. I am parting with one in .223 for this very reason and looking for an AR instead. Not knocking 7.62 at all, but you specified a range/plinking gun, and to me the 5.56/.223 is a little more fun for that than the 7.62. You have received some good recommendations in this thread and really can't go wrong with anything that has been suggested.

I would recommend staying in the AR platform if you decide on 5.56 and AK platform if you decide 7.62 or 5.45. Careful, though, it's kinda like getting into bussekins, and it's difficult to keep it to just one. :)

But with the 7.62, there is no need for "follow up" as one round will do the job........
