OT/ Rifle Reccomendation

FNAR is a good way to get around the semi auto ignorance. An other good choice, although a bit heavy, is a Garand from CMP. you could almost get 4 field grade rifles for $2K.

Also the politicians don't know what an en bloc clip is and most likely will not include them in any legislation. Something to be said for the ignorance of politicians. (I know there are only 8 rounds)

But with the 7.62, there is no need for "follow up" as one round will do the job........

Agreed. Also, when I was out and about yesterday there was no 5.56/.223 to be had off the shelf (or any 5.45 for that matter), but there was 7.62 on the shelf. No problem here with the 7.62.

When the panic buying stops buy both a decent mid range AR 15 and AK 47/74. Since you just want the basic rifle without bells and whistles you can easily get them both for less than $2000.

+1!!

Jason, yeah I use to collect FAL's. Love them. Quite possibly the best battle rifle ever made. Weight killed it. But the new DSA versions are quite possibly the best FAL's ever.

as for 556 and 762, both serve a purpose. CQB wise, the 556 is the way to go. Room clearing(ie., home defense) the 556 is much better than a 762 for many reasons. A few being, weight, compactness, muzzle blast and noise and last and most important is overpenetration which can easily go into a neighboring home and kill an innocent.

762 has the advantage of incredible reach in such a compact caliber/rifle combo. I can consistently hit an 8 inch gong with a 4x scope at 700 yards. At 700 yards an 8 inch gong in a 4 power scope is just slightly bigger than the dot in the scope. Another advantage is that 762 is one of the most accurate out of the box rounds made.

As for all the other rifles and rounds mentioned, I would put those in the dreamweaver category (I'd like to have but not necessary) and anything outside of the mass produced calibers fits that category. OP should concentrate on a good 762 or 556 platform. And if you start with one, go with the larger caliber since it offers all the short range needs plus long range needs that the smaller caliber can't match.

This is one of my favorites. It looks like an AK but its not, IMO its better than an AK. The Czech VZ-58

I'd advise an M1A in whatever variant you can find/afford. Shoots well and unlike many platforms you should not have to worry too much about parts or ammo should some pending legislation cause importation and manufacturing to cease. If you don't want to spend a ton even the Chinese M1A's are pretty good. I know many shooters may disagree but I have put many rounds down range with mine and had no issues. I carefully measured all the dimensions of the receiver when new, after 50, 200, and 500 rounds and they did not change (there are rumors of them having "soft" receivers). Is it as accurate as my Springfield National Match or my Super Match? Well no, but it functions just as well and you would not be able to tell the difference in accuracy unless you were in the prone shooting paper at 100+ meters.

That's what I thought when I read that too...
Gotta love 7.62x51
I just picked up an LMT MWS and I love that rifle, remove 1 bolt, loosen the other and remove the barrel.
It came with a SS 16" and a SS 20", since then I picked up a SS 18" in .338 Federal.
Funny thing right now is you can't find a box of .308 anywhere but the .338 Fed is out there, you just need to bend over and pick it up.
30.06 performance out to about 5 - 600 yards at a buck a round,
Uses the same P mags as the .308.

Light weight .556 with accuracy go with a Knight's MOD 1, ($1900.00) want more distance and even more accuracy? Go with the SRP ($2125.00)
Ready to take a step up? Get the Knight's ECC in 7.62. ($4900.00)
They all take AR or $13.00 P mags..the .308 takes the $18.00 L20 Pmags.

Yes, you can find them at that price, I just did.

I hear that there are going to be lots of Rifles and 10+ round mags going on sale in New York.

M1A. Gonna have to shop around.

+1 I have one on the way! They are certainly not cheap and adding an optic mount or changing the stock can get pricey. That being said I like the regular old stock config just fine. I am gonna put a VLTOR CASV-14 top rail on it though.

For me it was between that and an FAL. If the FAL does it for ya check out DS Arms for an american made version.

Good luck on your search

Chuck, good choice on LMT:D

However, the prices you mention are not even close because of what is happening. A buddy of mine saw an MWS going for $5k and I doubt you will find an SR15 for anywhere near $2k. More like $4k if you want it now.

I went for accuracy and a history of reliability when I spiffied up my Mini-14. Which is another viable recommendation, people knock them for their accuracy though. Bone stock, they're rock solid little .223's, and with a little or a lot of work they can either match or outshine most AR's.

Stag 2T with + package (I just bought one)
Colt LE 6920
Daniel Defense V5 or V7
BCM (anything)
I like some of the new Sig ARs too, but haven't read much about them.

458 socom....... but prices are high for that calibre.

Last time I bought ammo for mine, if was about $60 for a box of 20. I've bought .50BMG for less. A lot less.

Unless you're into reloading, for a .50ish AR15, .50 Beowulf is probably the way to go. Ammo's about half the price of the .458SOCOM.

Ya I am thinking of getting the 50 Beowulf cause of 458 prices

Another consideration is that .458 takes standard AR mags. That seemed like a good thing at the time, but if they ban standard capacity magazines (i.e., ones that hold more than 7 or 10 rounds), you might find that anything bigger that a limited capacity .223/5.56 magazine is all you can get at a reasonable price (and maybe all you can keep, depending on how they write the law). That would probably give you a 2 to 4 round capacity in .458, which would be less than optimal, IMO. The Beowulf magazine won't feed .223, so you should still be able to get those with the full 10-round capacity.
