Other than H2O, What is your favourite drink on the trail?

Water is the only thing until I'm taking a break, then it might be Earl Gray tea with condensed milk, or maybe a wee dram of single malt in cold weather or mead in warm!

As to coffee, as rksoon said there is no real evidence that coffee is a diuretic (that means it increases urine production), it is however thought to stimulate urination if there is some to get rid of. That's why it is commonly (and possibly incorrectly) thought to be a diuretic. So, it makes you want to go, but probably doesn't make you go any more than you would have with water. That's the last thing I read on the subject, anyway.

I mainly carry only water, but sometimes in the winter Ill make a fire and have a nice hot cup of hot chocolate!!

Probably tea.

You've hiked a long way and finally made it to where you are camping.

You toss your pack down and lay down, exhausted with your pack as your pillow.

"How will I gather the energy to make camp?" you ask yourself.

Reaching in the pack you pull out the little alcohol stove from Iuke, the primus tea kettle and make a cup of strong tea and have a couple aspirins for good measure.

20 minutes later you are back up scurrying around putting up the tent, buiilding a fire.

Of course JAEGERMEISTER is good too.

Mostly water for me.. Sometimes if i plan on a realy long hot day of hiking it would be Gatoraid added in a bottle of water. Sometime a bottle of iced tea with some mint.. that is the most refreshing drink for hot weather that seems to make you come alive... Did you guys ever notice that one of the favroit drinks for people that live in the desert is Hot tea???

Water mostly, I do carry some packs of gatorade powder. In the colder months I will be carrying Tea, hot Chocholate and Tang

I plant my butt in Captain Picard's camp, and have a nice "Tea, Earl Grey, hot."

Of course in winter, hot chocolate with marshmallows is a required staple.

Hot / Cold:
I always carry and use cheap Lemon herb tea bags. Very mild but hides any taste that might be in the water or from purification, and tastes good cold also.

Cold:
Pink Lemonade Crystal light, no sugar etc, and tastes so damn good.

I always have some gatorade on me in the summer. (Liquid, not powder) It does add extra weight, but I love the taste of Lemon Lime gatorade. Once I tried making a fishing trap out of the bottle. I caught one minnow in 3 days of trying to get something with it. Not very effective.

I treat myself to hot tea that I make at home and carry with me in a thermos when woods strolling, especially with my wife. We enjoy "aging hippie teas" Pixie Mate makes a great line of yerba mate based teas also good are most any of the Chai-styled teas, especially from Tazo. We sweeten them with crystalized sugar and add some half and half. Water with a little lemon juice works great as well.

I am surprised no one mentioned swizzle:

I'm a fan of coffee.

Well, that's a bit of an understatement. I'm thoroughly addicted to it (to coffee, as opposed to caffeine in general, for some reason). My whole day is structured around pots of dark roast, whether I'm at home, at the office, or on the trail. Even though it takes up a bit of extra space, if I'm out for anything more than a few hours, I always bring along my French press and a container of coffee, plus a pot and water. There's nothing like that first cup of rich, black coffee on a chilly morning.

Other than that, I'm usually a water-only guy on the trail.

All the best,

- Mike

I've been using the Emergen-C electrolyte drink mixes...not too bad and pretty compact without all the sugar.

I still like coffee in the morning and licorice root tea in the evening. I've been drinking cold licorice root tea (using the coffee strainer adapter for the Guyot water bottles), and it's pretty refreshing. Water is still the staple, but when you drink bottled water for over a year (and getting it again in a couple of months), you really need something to add some flavor.

On an overnite, and sometimes a day hike I NEED coffee.:o

I am also a fan of chicken bullion cubes in cold weather.

Fruit Punch Gatorade, Country Time Lemonade, Sweet Hot Tea, Hot Cider....

Not necessarily in that order.

And of course, for just plain old hydration, the grand daddy of them all, water.

Water

Gatorade in hot weather.
Tea in any weather, any time, anywhere.
Fresh hot cowboy coffee is very good, too.
Water is necessary, but often not very appealing plain.
