OUR EPIC JOURNEY from FINLAND to ALASKA has startedy...

Good morning. Still outfitting for the trip. Yesterday I got AAA Plus membership. Took Avalanche to the seller (Quality Car Sales in Butler) as they had a brand new spare tire for me. They also replaced the electric mirror switch and hooked a diagnostic tool to monitor the ABS/brakes as a light comes on. Avalache has brand new brakes all the way around. Came to find that the sensor needed replacement. It was ordered on the spot. Anyway, the part will arrive on Wednesday morning and they will replace old one then...

The trip will start on Thursday morning and we will be at Lefty's and Carter's in Connecticut on Friday.

I will be hauling our 24ft Coachman home on wheels. I will pick it up from Clem's Rv & Trailer Sales. They too are making sure the trailer is ready to go without any worries for me.

Hooking up the sway bar....

We left Friday at about 3:30 to 4 pm and got on I-80 toward Lefty and Carter's. (We had never met Lefty & Carter, but we have had a great interaction on the Wooden Boat Forum...)

I set the cruise control to 55 mph and let it run slow...LOL....

We stopped at a roadside rest and went inside the trailer and had some lunch. After a while we were ready to continue our journey.

Earlier as we had driven, I had felt the brakes release the "grab" (srongly) when I let the foot of the brake.

As I sat there I decided to re-adjust the trailer brakes. I turned the right hand knob all the way to where I was told to put it.

I turned the other knob to where it started to get orange and the lights went off... NO response with anything.

It was after hours so I called Randy, the owner of the trailer "store". He didn't know what was going on and asked me to wait a bit while he called his mechanics.

As I waited for his call, I asked the trucker who pulled next to me if he knew what was going on. The man came to look at my truck but didn't speak English and could not help me.

I called Husband thousands of miles away. He told me to check the fuse. I opened the fuse box and became overwhelmed as there was at least 50 fuses. I could not believe a truck could have that many fuses...

Randy called me back and told me to check and make sure that the connecting jack was firmly pushed to it's recepticle in the truck... I did and it went in just a quarter hair more. The green ligt came on and I was able to adjust the brakes...

Oho...Carter just called us for breakfast...Will be back in a bit...

..........

So...We left the rest stop and drove nother hour and a half and stopped at a Flying J truck stop in Lamar, about 140 miles from our starting point.

What a huge and impressive truck stop. Anything you might want, was available...and inexpensively to boot...

The ground was nice and level. We filled our water tank 1/3rd of a way and settled for the night. The air was getting very cold as the sun had allready settled. I had the lights on for about 15 minutes and they faded off.

We had no lights and no heat. I had tried to get the heater on while we had the lights on, but to no avail...

We settled on our beds under every blankets we have. It was miserable....I love heat and this was physically painful...

I didn't sleep. I just suffered...

Got up and moving early... Drove accross the state of PA on I-80. The closer we got to CT, the busier the traffic got.

Lefty came and got us from a nearby gars station. I followed him to their home in the woods.

What a wonderful, spacious and beautiful place they have. Wild turkey flock, consisting of three males and seven females roam the grounds. Here are also a couple of lone male turkeys who live outside of the flock...

We were amazed to see the male turkeys chase the females up into the trees. They fly and settle on a branch about fourty feet up. Only then the males take to the wing...

We were sitting on the couch and Carter said to look behind me....I did and look and behold, there was a group of deer...maybe about 10-12 of them. They walked near the house and were very peacefully moving along...no hurry...just walking at a slow and easy gate...

Well, back to our arrival. The lights were still not working. I thought they should have as the battery should have been charged up by the truck as we drove.

I called Randy who connected us to Larry, his mechanic. As I was talking to Larry, Lefty looked at the battery and found that the battery was empty...cracked...and all the acid had leaked on to the bottom of the battery case.

Larry said, he had never seen anything like that before.

We had a wonderful evening with Lefty and Carter. Lefty made a lobster dinner with HUGE fresh lobsters and all kinds of good foods....:) Lefty even offered his lobster's tail to me. I ate it too... I'm not bashful when it comes to good food...

Saturday. Woke to Rhett meowing LOUD at about 4-5 am. His meow was more like a loud growling meow...

Nothing I said or did stopped that. He kept it up till about 7 am. Found out later that Tarzan the cat had spent the morning outside our trailer....

Here is Rhett taking it easy....

Carter came by as Cass and I were working on getting more organized with stuff that had no home till then.

Carter and I went and got me a new deep cycle marine battery and went shopping for food and supplies for the party and also for our trip.

We had agreat time. Conversation carried on like we would have known each other for years ....

Just a word of praise... Carter and Lefty are wonderful, kind and generous people. We really appreciate their friendship.

................

Good morning. Another miserable freezing night.

The men checked the plug wiring that trailer hooks to.

Apparently the trailor company's mechanic had not put hot wire in there so the battery was not charged as we drove. Going to a trailer place now.

............

The worst part of the battery being dead and not charging is not the freezing cold, it's the danger posed on the road when we moved.

I didn't know that the brake-away-cable and trailer brakes needed electricity from the battery.

Thw worst case scenario would have been that, if I understand this correctly, if the trailer had broken lose it would not have stopped as it would if the brake away cable had the elecricity to do it's job.

..........

OK, back to the EBS... It was a small intimate gathering.

Jim and Tracy... Jim with his bright, alert and inquisitive eyes and a winning smile... Tracy, whose warm smile kept lighting up the room where ever she went...

Lady Elf who is a warm, caring person. Her bright conversation and easy, down to earth ways won us immediately over.

J. Dillon and Wife... Wow, what a pair. He is in an incredible shape, wiry as a wild cat and very much his own man... She is absolutely a classy beauty. Smart and soft spoken...

IMG_4675.jpg

R.I. Singer who entertained us with his beautiful music and interesting travels... Imagine riding a motorcycle 1000 miles in a day...

Linda, his lady friend with abundant energy and beautiful smile..

These were all people from the WBF and our first meeting. I really like people and these will be friends, hopefully for life...

The night grew long, but the music went on and on....and I staid behind the camera...

Unfortunately we were not able to connect with Indian George this time, but we really like George and will look forward to seeing him next trip, or maybe he will come and visit us in Alaska some day.

Guess what a horrid thing was on my ear.... I hate ticks.....

.....

We headed out of Carter's and Lefty's and I missed the turn to the bridge while talking (hands free) with Carter about driving directions. We could not turn around for a while as there were no exits. Ended up in the outskirts of New York. Imagine hauling a 24 foot trailer in a city and fast traffic everywhere. It was stressful to say the least.

I got us turned around, but the street scene was so tight, it went over the curb to get out of there... (Remember I'm a country girl and lived on a farm in Finland the last ten years.)

We got back to the highway, turned back and found the bridge we were supposed to take. We drove another half an hour when a vehicle passing us motioned for me to stop. They were pointing to the trailer. I pulled over and walked back to check the trailer's tires.

It had a flat. I had not felt it. Went back inside the truck and called AAA. Told them of the flat. They asked me if I had trailer coverage. I told them I had AAA-plus. After a brief conversation I was informed that they can send someone to change the tire, but I'd have to pay for it. (When I bought the membership, I had told the agent I would be towing a trailer but she didn't mention that I had to purchase trailer coverage separately. I would have had I known.)

I saw a car pull in front of me and told the woman on the phone that I might have help. Thanked her and hung up.

Got out of the truck and the man from the car was already on his way to me. He was a knight in shiny armor...a good Samaritan. We looked for a jack and could not find one. I called the trailer seller and he told me the trailer didn't come with a jack.

We got the tire changed and Michael, the good Samaritan decided to drive ahead of us and show us into a truck stop where it would be a safe place for us to stay. We convoyed for a couple of hours until the Flying J. We were in touch from time to time and talked on the phone (hands free).

He told me he had worked as a police officer on 9/11 and had been right on ground zero helping and trying to save lives. He was carrying someone out of the building when it collapsed on him. Amongst other injuries, his hip was injured badly. He had had a some kind of ? hip replacement done. I don't remember all he told.

I offered to buy him dinner. When we got into the truck stop, there were two side by side. Somehow we got lost and never met again. (I did send him a nice Alaskan Ulu Knife after we got home...)

The next day we got a new tire and rim. It had taken till about one pm...

Then we continued toward Kentucky where Mike and Kathy, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and their son Travis lived.

We got there without further mishap, though it was late in the evening. We pulled into a truck stop about 10-15 miles from where they lived. Their home is up a steep hill without a place to park or turn, so we went to the truck stop Mike knew someone at. Our parking there for some time was already arranged....

Lot of fishermen here...red necks too...LOL....Here are some bumper stickers seen there...

Got a late start today. Had a shower at the truck stop and bought a big hot meal here. Mike, my brother in law came by and we breakfasted together.

We shopped for a CB radio. Drove a lot miles and ended up getting one from a Pilot truck stop about 20-25 miles away. I decided to get a Cobra 29 as three truckers had told me it was a good radio and would work for our needs. I got a magnetic, roof mounting antena and a wiring connection to plug into a cigaret lighter's spot.

A young trucker hooked it up and calibrated it.

1241006364.jpg

It worked fine for few minutes and went dead.... I tried to get a radio check but got no answers, there is total silence. No squelch or RF gain sounds, nothing.

Could I have done something to it when I moved the power cord from one cigaret lighter outlet to an another while the CB was on?....

Or would it be because the SWR Calibration might not have been made right to start with... I when I read the calibration on the manual this evening, I found the following;

It should have been done with doors closed (they were not) ... Also, no one should have been standing near the antena, and I was...

I think I will re-calibrate it in the morning myself and see if I can get it working...

We're in Arkansas. Here we met another WBF member, Phillip. This morning Phillip smoked a bee hive and brought in a frame with honey comb in it. The fresh from the hive honey was sweet and wonderful. You might not believe it, but it tastes different than the store bought.

In Kentucky my B_I_L Mike is a scout master.

We went to a lake where his son and other scouts had gone to the other side of the lake where they were putting up bat houses for some endangered bats.

The following pictures were taken there...

The bat houses still in the back of a truck.
