OUR EPIC JOURNEY from FINLAND to ALASKA has startedy...

OK, catch-up...From the Olive Hill area we headed to Memphis Mike's and Sue's (they are another couple we have never met yet,
but we know each other from the WBF)....but we did it via Mammoth Caves.

The night before the tour of the caves, we found a camping spot. It was nice and wooded.

Here we are...

We walked around the camping area and this deer and two young ones were near our camp. We sat on a pick-nick table
and just watched them for a quite a while....It actually started to get pretty dark before we returned to our camp.....

Next morning we took the "Historic Tour"...

This is the entrance to the cave...The waterfall starts right off the edge... There was a remarkable temperature difference
as soon as we got down the stairs...

The first part of the cave takes you to a "cavern" where people mined Salt Petre... This sign tells you about it...

Here is an interesting rock-pattern...

Here is Fat Man's misery. It was a long, narrow"corridor" where the people's bodies had polished the rock as they walked by...
many places were so tight you had to turn sideways to get through there....

After leaving Mammoth, we visited WBF's Memphis Mike and Sue...(another couple we had never met before)

Here they are... A pair of wonderful warm people. Mike was soft spoken and nothing like the ruff-n-gruff persona he puts across the forum sometimes...He was kind and sweet as was Sue...

On the photo below, you can see the gentleness in his eyes and face...

Mike is a helluva cook and he does the cooking while Sue and "Us Ladies" talk...

It became clear really fast that Sue and I could talk about anything...any subject at all.....It was fun and interesting........as was listening to Mike play his guitar....

Here is Sue and the sweet dog Heidi.

She was very interest in the tid-bits we had... Here she went to see if Sue might drop anything that she might get lucky on....

Took this in passing. Tried to not be obvious about it.

We saw many of these newspaper sellers on the street corners....sitting in the rain. Not very many takers for their papers either...Made a mental note to buy a paper from the next vendor...

IT'S KIND OF LONELY HERE....

From Arkansas we drove Missouri to visit Larry of "Boylesboats" and his smart, sweet wife Sharon...They are another couple we had communicated with on the WBF, but never met before.

Here Larry is visiting us in our travel trailer...

Larryvisitingus.jpg

I have to tell you that Larry plays wonderful banjo. One of the finest banjo players I've heard.

Larry gave us a solo CD that knocks your socks off and makes you want to kick up your heels and dance.....

First meeting of Larry when he came to meet us at a truck stop...We followed him to their place....

Our visit lasted till next day which was my birthday. The morning of goodbye Larry and Sharon took us to this quaint place for birthday breakfast. They had a store full of "eye fulls"...LOL.....

Then we headed for the Wounded Knee and the Bad Lands....

.

So, we headed for the Wounded Knee and the Bad Lands....

We were about thirty miles from Wounded Knee when we were gassing up at a little gas station and Cass looked at our trailer and said..."It can't be OUR trailer"... It was....

The awning had gotten loose and was chewed up by the heavy HEAVY winds.

We went to a tire store near by and looked for help there...

....and help we had...by the numbers -as three gentlemen took care of the problem so we could continue on our trip...

Here they are...

We've always had a great affinity to the Native American People, so we looked forward to the experience.

We met a very nice Native man named "Eugine Fast Wolf" at a gas station. We talked for a long time and he asked us to send him a post card from Alaska....

This is on the way to Wounded Knee...

OnthewaytoWoundedKnee.jpg

There was not much to see, so we kept on driving and hoping to see something interesting....

Wounded Knee was a little village, that's about all....
WoundedKneearea.jpg

And another village....

We drove about 25 miles out on this little, narrow, holey road... There was nothing there...

Here is a "Bad Land" bluff...It was beautiful...

This is what the GPS said....

A lonely, abandoned church....Nothing else for miles around...

WoundedKneeareaoldabandonedchurch.jpg

We drove about an hour. The road was bumpy and holey, -pavement broken and we had to drive back the way we came.

Next we headed to Mt. Rushmore....
