Our "Front Porch" ....

Touche Rubi :D The exposed cap of the lenslight that sticks out of the pocket is what concerns me and one reason I'm liking the HDS more. As for Molly, there are no balloons to worry about- I'm more worried about the other places she's been rolling around. With cows and horses coupled with her generally bad smell, I think I'd rather not think too hard.

Also I never really thought about it until just this moment, but I don't know why exactly my light is sharing my off hand pocket with with my gigantic phone (iphone in the insanely book like mophie case) when the only stuff in my left pocket is my key chain and my investigator. I probably should fix that.

On a totally unrelated note, a few pages back lots of yall were sharing stories about your kids. I don't have kids, don't have a real desire to have kids of my own, and I'm a long way from a place in life where I'd be comfortable with it, but I do spend a lot of time with my niece and nephew (7 and 2 respectively). I've been helping my niece with her homework- in particular math lately, and after we do her homework I usually write up some separate problems of my own design to see if she learned what she was suppose to and generally to try and make her think about what she has learned. My rule is simple- she can use my investigator to work on any of the problems I write up (she loves pens, pencils, paints, etc.) after her normal homework is done. She's so excited to play with it, she now asks me to to more math problems. So apparently we can add "making children excited about math" to the list of Rick's accomplishments.

Very Cool Nj - the value of a Mentor in a young ones Life is incalculable (pun intended) I often reflect back on the Great Uncles and Aunts I had growing up that made me who I am today - Wish I could tell them Thank You, they were Everything to me.
I can only Hope I reflect a little of their Light on a young persons road.
As for your pocket load out, experiment and try anything you do until you forget the old muscle memory, only way you give it a fair try.
Cheers my Friend :)

Nj. Sounds like you need to get that girl an investigator of her own one day. Probably with a flat end cap though ;). It's really cool that you are a positive role model in her life. Your a good dude.

Thanks guys. I actually wasn't posting thinking about my doing anything special or of interest. It's just something I do to try and help her because I can. I just thought it was funny how something as simple as a pen can make the difference to a kid. I'm sure it has more to do with the pen being mine than any specific feature of it, but I just got a kick out of her asking, "can we do math problems and can I use your pen?" One of these days I will have to order her one- and concoct some way to keep her from losing it.

Very cool NJ!!! Yeah that would be hard to get her a pen that price and lose it :( Maybe get her a cool inexpensive one and see how it fends... So what is your decision on the HDS buddy?

I'm 95% sure I'm going to pick up the rotary 250. I've got a strider out on loan at the moment, but soon as I get it back (if he doesn't want to buy it) I'm going to turn it into liquid assets for something useful. I keep coming back to the HDS, so I think it has to happen in the near future. That and finally getting my CHL are my two eminent EDC changes. Too many folks with similar taste in gear swear by the HDS and y'all haven't steered me wrong yet!

Cool NJ!! I'm excited for you to get one man!! As you already know... I love mine :)

And that has to say something coming from Rubi's 45 years of flashturbating :) Sorry guys I had too :D

I have a lifelong philosophy that I rant about to anyone who still finds me interesting- defer to the experts! There are smart people everywhere with tons of experience and acquired knowledge. Find them and listen! Double true with matters of taste and those who have similar tastes. I like my lenslight. I actually like it a lot, but my general obsession with durability draws me to the HDS. The only thing that worries me is losing losing some throw (I'm not really sure if or how much on the 250 lumen model), but with the increased durability, control, and aesthetics I think I will be happier.

I agree with you fully NJ. Lots of knowledge out to be had... Especially from these other wise fellows.. Then its up to us to apply the knowledge and then comes the wisdom :) I have tried to live my life like that, and still try in fact. That's why it's great to be around all these great people here and laugh, learn, and share our life's experiences. Very cool in my book :D

I agree what Nj and KJ are both saying, listening to people who have had more experiences in certain disciplines and with equipment. Generally in a situation and a consensus is attained, following that path is sometimes the better option. The saying that " in school you are given the lesson, then the test, but in life you are given the test then the lesson " is so true.

Had to walk the 11 y/o niece to her bus stop this morning because of this guy.. I'm glad she was paying attention and didn't have her face buried in her iPhone (that she has an iphone at 11 bugs me, but at least she was able to call for help ;) So, I showed her that he was more interested in snacking on the alders and that if she kept her distance and was quiet that he would tolerate her passing. THEN I got to demonstrate what agitation looks like in a moose when he wasn't too happy that I paused to snap the second pic, he started to put his ears back so I figured we'd resume our travels at that point :D

Nature and wildlife are some of the most spectacular to experience in this lifetime. Very cool pics Shane!! The only moose I seen this year was the moose roast I pulled out this week to throw in the crock pot :)

Lol, that sounds good to me Juice! I toyed with the idea of hanging a salt lick in my garage to lure one in but then thought about the damage a pissed off and freaked out moose would do

Hoping to put one in the freezer this fall, for the meat and also a chance to put my XM Skinner through it's paces as intended!

The critters and overall environment is one of the biggest reasons I tried so hard to get back to AK for good, I'll never tire of seeing and sharing space with them. My first year up here I kept a tally of moose sightings, well I kinda gave up after 250 but every time I see one it's like seeing one for the first time.

Joe - spot on (as usual) and Shane - that is too cool. I LOVE that pic. I'm just glad I wasn't there given my propensity for Odd "chasing large animals" behavior.
That guy is/was best left to his snack and I get what you mean about be bugged by your 11 year old niece having an iPhone.... I still Harumph when I walk into my house and ALL four(4) of my teenagers have their heads buried in a smartphone, wearing earbuds -music blasting, LapTop on and in their lap while the TV is on and the Dog is laying there chewing my remote control.
Brain Damaged would be my diagnosis for all four.

I have always had a great appreciation for wildlife of all sizes. I would love to run into a moose (at a safe distance and not during the rut)! Living in the city, I don't get many visitors other than the occasional raccoon. I do however see an incredible amount of birds of prey, (eagles and hawks) here in Saint Paul. That is cool. Oh and last year a little red squirrel moved into one of the trees by my house and scared away all of the grey squirrels. (not my picture)

Yeah, my theory is the 11 y/o's inability to express a coherent thought has to be at least somewhat due to her incessant preoccupation w/ the iphone, the ipad, the laptop, the tv - in that order. I force her into conversation at the dinner table every night - no tv, and definitely none of the other electronics. It's tough getting her to logically and articulately describe her day to me. Don't even get me started on the lack of education she seems to be getting at school!

The dog just wants your attention focused on him (her?) instead of the tv ;) Mine used to no-kidding come and nudge my hand off of the laptop :D Man, I still miss that lab :(

Me too! I often joke that the moose and rabbits we have roaming around (and black bear to a lesser degree in the neighborhood) would look great in the freezer, but I really do enjoy seeing them out and about. We have the aforementioned moose and snowshoes, plus black bear (possibly brown, I just haven't spotted any around the house yet), lynx, and the ubiquitous squirrels roaming around. Ravens and eagles (mostly bald with the occasional golden) predominate the sky for bigger birds. Lots of sparrows, finches, and magpies (cool to watch, but they will forever be on my s**tlist for tormenting my pooch) to round it out in the summer.. Oh, and the occasional immigrant turkey :)

Oh yeah - and the odd caribou/reindeer being taken out for it's daily walk.. (not me in the pic btw..)..

Fortunately the school my kids attend(ed) forces them to engage in open discussion, debate and argue issues many times with the least popular "side" assigned for defensive argument, uniforms (jacket and tie for males, skirts and sweaters for girls) are worn to standard.
Electronic devices are confiscated if visible during school session and home work is assigned and collected.
My oldest three(3) now in College Full-Time, thank us for sending them there because they were truly prepared for the rigors of a University, many of their peers are struggling to say the least.
The financial sacrifices were considerable but, I looked at it as part of the deal. I never really thought I'd retire anyway. now I'm sure of that.
