newest update 18 mar 2012 page 3 again. completely unexpected customer service.

Latest update on page 3. warranty info

updated warranty info on page 2 at the bottom...made contact today

so me, dtrap, and mad dog (my 5 y/o girl) were about and about building shelters, fires, and just plain chopping today. it was going great. we had some busses, blind horse knives, 2 hawks warbeast, JK belt hawk, condor parang and a fiskars bill hook.

we threw up a quick tarp shelter, found some kindling and dry wood (very hard task). do some prep work. I pull out the esee fire starter and get a flame going (after about 30 tries lol) we found a old metal barrel someone was shooting and used it as the fire pit, also found some weird plastic things we let my daughter use as seats and a sled lol. after she was all hooked up and warm under the tarp, dtrap and me started really playing around. we found a lot of dead hardwood and proceed to test the chopping ability of the blades. the wood was a hard oak or something similar. the hawks are crazy good choppers. they all were really doing very well but the blades required more work. we stoked the fire continually and it used a lot of wood. under the tarp it was actually very warm, probably around 55 or so, while in the elements it was 21.

now on to the wtf part. so I am using my 2 hawks war beast to chop some very seasoned hard wood. the final hit and the wood breaks off and I hear this strange sound. I look down and this is what I see

to say I was salty is a freaking understatement. wtf!!!!! but I guess at least it wasn't a real survival situation and I guess we will see how his warranty it. this hawk I got at the 1500 and has very minimal use.

Dang, I haven't ever seen a hawk do that before, I've heard that steel has a point where it can get fragile, just never experienced it myself. Good luck with the warranty!

yeah it's only a week old and the website says hawk blades are warranted for 25 years so. it was still a blast hanging out with the family and beating on some blades, honing skills and watching the little one chop

Looks like a bad heat-treat. Great that you got the tyke out there and enjoyed some quality time together!

Glad no one was hurt!!!

Hope the company fixes it quick

Never saw a break like that before

Crazy!!!!!! Must have been a flaw in the steel.

I have hawks that have been thrown thousands and thousands and thousands of times! Bounced of of countless rocks (I have uses my hawks and let a group of 150 or so kids learn to throw them for 9 hours on the rockiest soil ever! They were so beat up afterwards).

Priceless with your daughter
Better than anything else!!
Congrats

What knife is this?

Looks like a good day out, except for the hawk breaking. Good to see my hawk getting some use. Your new spike hawk is heat treating right now, went out to the shop at 1 am to start it!

Always a great time when the kids are involved. They are like sponges and too many parents let video games become the babysitter. I am waiting for grand kids to be able to do that stuff with again.

this is a custom blind horse bushcrafter xl. I picked it up last weekend at the INDY 1500 gun and knife show. I am really digging it. very well made blade. enough length to baton with and it throws sparks better than any of my scrappers lol.

the full tang hawk is a jk belt hawk and it's a beast. mine is a bit different than the normal ones he does as I had him bump it up to 14 inches in length. 1/4 inch thick 01 and it chops like a son of a gun. carries very well also. great tool. if you need a solid camp axe definitely check it out.

bigcountry I agree completely. It was a blast having her out there and teaching her to get dead wood from up in the air vs on the wet ground (though she was mostly breaking off live little branches lol) the day was a great time and worth the hawk breaking. I'm sure 2hawks will take care of me. thanks for all the comments guys

That really sucks. But, that is not the first picture I have seen of that happening. My friend had the same break occur in the same spot with the same hawk.

Let it be known that all of 2 Hawks are CAST heads not forged like the regular custom or even Cold Steel heads are. Stuff like this while rare can happen easier being cast imo.

I was going to order one of those 2hawks axes until I did a bit of research and found out they are all cast. Way too expensive for a cast head IMHO. Chris

really? this makes me nervous lol. I'm hoping he gets back to me today but who knows. and I knew it was cast heads but I didn't think that would cause a problem like this.

Looks like a great day, except for the break. Your daughter seems to be having a blast! Good job, Dad!
