outdoor hat?

I've got a small noggin, so I don't care for the excessive wide-brimmed hats. My Filson Packer has been my go to hat. I still use baseball caps and a couple cotton boonie hats, but the Filson is much more durable. I'd like to pick up a good wool crusher hat for this winter.

My momma always said I was special and my wife loves me regardless of what hat I'm wearing...who cares if I look like an Indiana Jones geek:D

Well the current fashion fad for hats is the baseball crap. Now, I simply ask anyone on these forums to objectively look at a baseball cap and consider its merits. It has a single visor that affords no protection of the ears or back of the neck from sun or rain. It doesn't keep the mosquites and bities' from nipping at your neck.

Now if you were part of a lost tribe and saw two people hiking out to greet you. One was wearing a cowboy hat and one was wearing a baseball hat. What would you really think???? I think the guy with the baseball cap would be the one being called a dork and the clown.....Lets be realistic here.

Well, if the baseball cap was on backwards or cockeyed, I would say "hey a redneck that probably knows what's going on and there's some punka$$ knucklehead tagging along"....:D

I agree, when it's windy, sunny or raining a baseball cap is pretty much useless.

Great thread, good pics. Amen KGD. In my twenties I had big sun exposure at high altitude, no hat, no sunblock, now I have melanoma, sarcoma, surgery, including ear surgery. I wear a Tilley but its a little late for me. Rock6, you would look good in anything but those big brim hats come in all sizes. Dobomon the pith helmet has been the choice in some extreme environments by military and govt such a the NVA and even the Brits in the Sahara. Just say no to baseball caps when you are in the bush.

If it maintain its shape then a till sound good.. I like the LTM6 and the TH4 for someone that is in the sun alot i rather cover myself.. I would let everyone know what i want for my birthday or any other time i get a present.. If i can wash it every couple of months and have it last for the next ten years ... thats a bargin.

Actually, that Packer looks more like something Survivor Man might wear. I remember an episode where he made a meal out of prickly pear using his multi-tool. Cool!

Tilley's do very well after coming out of the washing machine. The only thing required is that you remove the little foam insert in the top (its the piece that keeps the hat floating if dropped in the water). As I said earlier, because of the bird poop and heavy amounts of sweat I will wash mine pretty much once per week in the height of the field season. You let the hat air dry after washing it - it takes about 1 hr and you are good to go.

The brim never retained any creases in doing this. In fact, Tilley recommends washing the hat when it gets out of shape, and giving it a bit of a stretch and shaping after it comes out of the wash - at least for the Hemp ones.

Thanks for the update on Tilley hats. I missed your post initially. Just ordered the TH4 'bout an hour ago. Can't wait to have something more substantial than the BBB.

For us nerds who are already grown up and dont need the Indiana Jones look of the Akubra a Tilley with natural materials is number one. Hope you feel superior with your hollywood inspired fedora and trendy "raful".

My apologies for putting you on the defensive. Everyone else seems to have understood I was kidding.

Trendy "raful"? Whoever heard of it it, for it to be trendy? I've been going around in ball caps, bucket or boonie hats for years. I just got into fedoras. Nobody else around here wears anything like them, either.

Relax, this thread is a good discussion, and it's for fun.

I've certainly enjoyed this thread. Quirky misfits that we all are.....Now we should get to the real discussion.

Who wears a kick'n ass belt buckle? I must say - in Latin America, those boys know how to show off their boys. They got belt buckles that are like picture frames!!!!!!!!!

I've never found any hat that kept insects from biting at my neck if they wanted to.

Sunny and raining I get, but windy?

In the woods I normally wear either a ball cap or a booney, it depends on my mood and the weather.

The rest of the time I wear a ball cap or a cowboy hat. Since I live in Wyoming wearing a cowboy hat doesn't make me look like a "clown". :D (However, if you're from out of state on vacation here and trying to look like a cowboy, clown might be one of the better things the natives would call you ;))

When you are just chillin' by the campfire. You can enjoy your nice big cigar, blow slow and the smoke circles around the rim and gives you bug free respite.

When its really nasty, take some good ol' hard core deet and put a nice line around the rim of your hat. It keeps the bugs away really well, and you don't have to get the repellent all over your face and neck.

I've always been a ball cap wearer. Just can't make a full switch to another style. I do have a Filson Packer I wear occasionally when camping or hunting.

Tilley Hemp Hat! I find that they are more packable then the nylon versions and I like the slightly greater weight of them.

I have not read the rest of the posts but I have to give my vote to the Tilley Hemp as well, not cheap but well worth the extra dosh !!!!!

Sunny and raining I get, but windy?

I've found the brim can be tilted a little to act as a wind break...something you can't do with a ball cap when the wind is hitting you from the side. Of course if it's cold along with the wind, the packer hat gets packed and the fleece beanie comes out:thumbup:

As you can tell from my avatar, I like the Akubra's too :D

I wore wool felt for quite a lot of years. I did not realize what I was missing and how much difference quality fur felt made between the cheapie wool felt hats.

It has to get REALLY hot for me to not wear the Akubra (which is not that often in MI). But, if it gets that hot, or I am backpacking (where the stiff brim gets in the way) I just use the military boonie.

I have messed around with the Tilley's in stores, and they are super nice and extremely comfortable. I would not hesitate to get one. However, since my use would be so specific, I didn't think it was worth the cash, since the Akubra is still the go to.....plus I think it looks better. Looks are obviously very subjective.

Acubra cattleman in winter seems to work for me. Or a heavy old Stetson that looks close to it. I'm not much of a hat person, most just don't look right other than the above. Loosearrow

A Filson Packer Booney while wearing a tank top and shorts somewhat defeats the purpose. If I could I would post up a picture of me on any number of camping trips. I could be made president of the "wilderness nerd society":D Seriously I have beem told by friends and family to relax and take in some sun. But I don't mess around out there. I can always be found wearing REI light weight long sleeve shirts and pants that have built in 30spf sun protection, and a wide brimmed hat with the same. My hat goes beyond wide brimmed, it has a very long back end that really shields my neck well. And I always wear the pants but if not; I will apply sun block on my legs. On my hands also. And I'm not just talking about camping either. Everyday day wear:D I wear these long sleeve shirts and pants while on a boat on the lake. Even swimming around in a lake; sometimes even while in a swimming pool:D The hat to I cinch it tight on my chin when swimming around. In fact I take it with me to water parks and where it while swimming around in the water. Not joking about that one. Now I don't wear the clothes while swimming in public pools or at the beach. Just the hat, sun block, and a speedo :D Sunblock goes on my face and hand's most days while the rest is covered up. If the sun is out you count on seeing me wearing a wide brimmed hat while walking the parking lot from my car to the mall. I don't own any short sleeve shirts and rarely wear shorts. And I am never without sunglasses. As for the Tilley hat I liked the looks and fit while trying them out at a store in West Yellowstone Village. Just didn't feel like spending $100 on a hat that week. All hail the president of the "wilderness nerd society":D

Way back in this thread Esav said "The problem with Tilley or Outdoor Research or even booney hats is you end up looking like a member of "the wilderness nerd society".

True, but almost no one ever sees me! I have a long-billed gore tex weather hat from Outdoor Research and I just love it in the rain. It's one of the few hats I've found that consistantly keeps the rain off my glasses--don't know if that's something the OP needs to worry about.
