Outdoors Picture of the Day

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa). Can be used to make a flavourful tea. Was also used medicinally. This is a picture of last year's plant, but even though long dead, the flower head, when crushed, is very aromatic. One of my favourite smells outdoors.

A couple of thoughts for your consideration, if pictures are kept to 800 pixels and narrower, it prevents a lot of browsing back and forth, and, I think it is more enjoyable if the location is noted (as has been done with most of the pictures). In this vein, Red Hill Valley, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, taken last Saturday.

I think this is good advice.

In thinking about this over the day, why not have a perpetually re-set Pic-of-the-week thread e.g. every Sunday night that would accumulate entries over the week.

Keep the rules established by Evolute - but it would be more fun if we demanded that the pic-of-the-week be actually taken during the proceeding week. I'd limit the entry to 1 pic per person. If they have a bunch of other shots they want to show then they could start their own thread. The neat thing would be that their entry would showcase what they decided was their best shot that week.

I agree with sizing 640 or 800 pixels but not bigger.

Are there any other labels/information for the shot that should be provided?

not one of my best shots, but a cool pic none the less....:o you gotta love redwood trees...

Most people think of Oregon as being very green, wet, and with some of the largest timber on the planet. Not so in the other half of the state.

An Eastern Oregon prairie school that hasn't seen students in a good many decades. Great area to practice those desert survival skills.

World famous for fly fishing and white water rafting, the Deschutes River meanders slowly past our home, heading north for about 190-miles before entering the magnificent Columbia River that divides Oregon and Washington.

My picture for day two: Western trillium... because today has an early spring feel for me.

Doc,

I think most people have big enough screens, these days, that we no longer need to constrain ourselves with small pictures. I normally try to size each individual picture at the smallest size that gives me a satisfying feeling when I look at it.

Noting the location is good, generally speaking. However, I don't always remember my exact locations, and I don't always consider it relevant information.

J Williams inspired me to take this pic.
Its the small pine forest behind where I work. Taken today on my lunch hour.

This was taken as a 'reference' shot with a phone while hiking, but I want to go back with my 35mm. Any tips ?

I think this composition would benefit from lower contrast. I would probably try to take it on a darkly cloudy day, and then also in dim light close to dawn or dusk. Fill flash is another possibility.

As far as screen size goes, I disagree. I have a 17" LCD and I have to scan back and forth on some pictures. Apparently kgd agrees. I picked 800 pixel width because that's what Photobucket says is its max size and that is a big picture.

As far as the location is concerned, I understand your problem but if this is supposed to be pick of the day or recently, you would remember. Granted, with some pictures it is irrelevant, such as with my Bergamot picture, but it's still nice to get a sense of location, especially with members all over the globe. I wasn't suggesting it be mandatory. :(

Besides I was just throwing it out for consideration.

Here is my pick of the (to)day picture. In it is 2 wild edibles and 1 poisonous plant.
