Went to a local knife shop and met a nice chap and struck up a conversation with him. He was serious collector. He pulled 3 different folders from different pockets and then pulled out his wallet and took out a credit card knife and these were all his EDC. Is 4 knives overkill for edc?

You wouldn't believe me if I told you how many I carry  :D

I don't think four is overkill unless you only have one pocket :D

I don't know mabey he he just loves those knives so much he needs to cary them all or he has applications for all of them.

How many do the rest of you guys cary for EDC.

The most I can see the need to carry would be in a survival scenario. Then I think I'd want a large-ish fixed blade, a SAK or multi-tool and a 3" or so pocket folder. For around-the-town, a single pocket folder does it for me. I'll just hope TEOTWAWKI or something doesn't happen when I'm so ill-prepared ;).

I have to resist that tempatation to carry a ton of knives. Right now I'm trying to limit myself to one "tactical" folder and a slipjoint. But I have a little teeny SAK on my keychain so I guess I technically carry 3 knives all the time. I'm thinking about setting up a "slipjoint of the day" rotation, and carrying a different Case every day of the week. But it's so fun to sit at my desk and fiddle with my knives while I work- I usually have 3 or 4 different knives in my briefcase on top of the 3 on my person. Plus a leatherman. And usually one knife or the other finds its way into one of my coat pockets. Nothing terribly scary (besides my Manix, which isn't really all that scary)- just slipjoints or SAKs. They're like pocket jewelry.

It doesn't have anything to do with SD or really needing all of those knives, it has to do with having my toys with me- sort of like a kid who has to have ten different stuffed animals with him before he'll get in the car. I have a lot of knives that I enjoy having around, so naturally I end up carrying a lot with me. I totally understand the guy who EDC's 4 knives, but I can see why some people might think it's weird. That's why I never pull out all of my knives at once in front of people.

This is probably not the place to get a real world answer to your question. Around here anyone that carries just one or even two knives seems to be in the minority.

Ya, but then what do yo carry in your other pocket? lmao. I carry a 551 grip clipped to my rh pocket, native clipped to my lh pocket (backup), and a Sak tinker in my lh pocket. Only three. Good thing too. I was on my way to a gun show on Sunday, and had my grip out to take some tags off my new shoes, then left in such a hurry, and while talking on the phone, and managed to forget it on the side table.....I would have been nekked lol if I didn't have my trusty Native in the other pocket.

Nah.

<patting myself down...stand by>

Al Mar Osprey on my keys, Hide Away Knife in my cell phone case, Spyderco carbon fiber/ZDP Military in my left front pants pocket, Case trapper in my right thigh patch pocket.

Four's good :)

just one, i rotate between them i keep about 4 in the truck in addition to the one on my person though

Well.....we could talk about woods edc lmao......I will admit that I almost assuredly carry too many knives when in the woods....usually just because I like to try different things with different knives to see which does what most efficiently....sometimes that makes for a heavy pack. When out for a hike more than to play, I only carry four though...or seven if I haven't thought to remove my daily carry :).

:p So all of you guys are overweight because of your knives?

The real question should not be "How much do you weight?" but "How much do you weight ...without your knives?":p

yes, it's overkill.

i edc 2 knives and i think that's already plenty. i got a strider DB as my thick, hard use knife and a strider sng for lighter, finer, general use. i can't imagine why anyone would carry more, or if it'd be at all useful. now, if the guy is seriously a collector and just happens to like having a bunch of nice knives in his pocket, that's his prerogative. and i'm willing to bet a couple things:
A) he actually only uses 1 out of the 4
B) he likes knives for being knives, not b/c they are useful. it'd be like carrying around art that you could admire all the time.

that, or i could see carrying around 4 knives b/c they are 4 crappy knives and he doesn't expect them to last. but i spend good money on good knives with good warranties, so 2 will suffice for me. ;)

but hey, that's what freedom is. he (and you) should carry as many knives as you damn well please. end of story.

oh, i take it back.. i didn't even realize i edc more than 2 knives. i carry a strider BTSS in my messenger bag (never been used, but it's kind of an emergency/insurance tool) and i guess the one on my multiplier (which i've also never used, also carry in my messenger bag).

but in my pants? only 2 knives. sometimes one. *gasp*

I carry a boker folder a leatherman wave a leatherman surge plus a china beater for lending out and I use all of them. I am a firefighter and I do a lot or extrication and search and rescue so they all get used. 4 is fine. you can never have to many knives.

I think carrying more than one is overkill unless you know you are going to at some point need a SE and PE knife, or if you have a really top notch knife you dont wan't to "ruin" with tough jobs and you bring along a beater.

I EDC three. A CA legal auto that is used as a moneyclip, a SAK (usually a one hander or a super tinker) and a small stag handled lockback. I used to carry more but it got just too confusing.

I EDC four knives. A spyderco Manix, Leatherman Wave, Spyderco Delica 4 waved, and my SAK camper. I dont know why i carry four, it seems my SAK gets all the attention.
