Overkill...

regardless of how many knives I'm carrying on my person, I always have a knife within 2 arms length.

This is going to make me sound like a real nob but who cares What is EDC i know its got something to do with defense? maybe anyway i carry a small custom edge and a credit card blade in my wallet

EDC stands for Every Day Carry. Nothing to do with self-defense, just something that you carry with you every day.

Went to a local knife shop and met a nice chap and struck up a conversation with him. He was serious collector. He pulled 3 different folders from different pockets and then pulled out his wallet and took out a credit card knife and these were all his EDC. Is 4 knives overkill for edc?
Was the guy you were talking to perhaps behind the counter? If yes then a lot of it might just be salemanship. Demonstrating some of the products they just happen to have for sale in the glass case (nothing wrong with that!). Boosting sales by showing all the ways you can carry a knife comfortably without blatantly carrying a knife.
A gunsmith at my old local gunshop/indoor range used to be similarly heeled. Every time i'd come in he'd be carrying the newest toy(s) (knife and/or gun). And of course it may be salemanship AND actual EDC. Either way whether its excessive is not a matter of number of knives but knife types. In my opinion EDC 4 trailmaster bowies would be excessive! EDC 8 Leatherman micras would be less excessive (but kinda silly) lol.
I have never carried 4 anything at a time but I have occasionally carried three, an old Wave, a micra on a keychain or around the neck and a little two layer SAK. Usually its two knives tops, usually SAK's and/or Leatherman's. Right now i'm in love with my Victorinox OH Trekker!
But really within the limits of common sense and legalities whatever floats your boat is fine with me!
:D

3 knives. 1) folder for food preparation and personal grooming tasks, lighter clean cutting tasks. 2) second folder for dirtier jobs like scraping battery posts etc. 3) Fixed blade for doing heavier chores.

Not an unreasonable EDC. But sometimes I only have one, other times more depending on what I am doing.

Yeah what you are doing (tools for specific tasks) and where you are doing it (office/backwoods/construction site etc) factors into what is adequate/apropriate and/or excessive.

I don't think that is excessive, if they are used.
Right now, if you count my camera bag, I have a Benchmade 940, Queen Whittler, Micra, Wave, and BRKT Northstar.
If I have a new folder I also will carry another just in case the new one doesn't seem to work out.
<shrugs>
All in the eye of the beholder. Now if I was going someplace formal I would probably limit myself to my Micra (cause it is on my keys) and my 707D2. I an extreme case, just the Micra. I would probably feel a bit wierd though.

I EDC one 3.5" to 4" bladed folder, usually either a Sebenza or a Benchmade knife of some type clipped to my R.F. pocket; a Victorinox SAK Executive down in my RF pocket; a Leatherman Blast in horizontal carry on my belt; Spyderco Ladybug on keyring; sometimes a Victorinox SAK Pioneer in my LF pocket. If I'm wearing a coat, sometimes I'll have an Endura, Delica, or a mini-Griptilian in my coat pocket.

Do I need each and every one of them every day? No. I do use knives daily, esp. the large folder and the Executive. I suspect it's simply habit to carry so many knives. The Ladybug is always with me because it's with my keys all the time, unless I go somewhere like an airport or event where knives are forbidden. Otherwise, if I leave all the other stuff at home, normally I have the large folder, Executive, and Ladybug regardless.

Just one for me. If I'm carrying my Fatboy theres another in there though.

There was a time where I carried a Gunting, Sebenza, La griffe and a Benchmade NImravus all at the same time. That didnt last too long though.

Now I just grab one in the mornings before I leave the house and thats that.

Well let's see, 3-4 sounds like a lot but it really isn't.

True "EDC"
A SS Spyderco Endura 4 RH front pocket
Buck 303 slipjoint loose in the left front pocket
SOG PowerPliers in sheath on belt (w/ Fenix L1T)

Desk drawer
Vic Classic

My truck
Swamp Rat Howler
Becker BK9
Buck 889 to backup E4

Work truck
Machete
Hand saw

It just depends on what you do and use them for.

i guess if you are going to count multi-tools and SAKs as knives i carry 5

i hardly think of them as knives, it's pretty rare i cut something with them

Midnite Manager - house/work keys (small phillips and pen are too useful)

Jester/Ladybug - truck/car keys (this way it's virtually impossible for me to leave the house without a knife)

Large Sebenza - clipped on pocket

Charge Ti - 3 O'Clock (interesting notation)

Swisschamp - pocket (carried one for almost half my life now, can't stop)

large doug ritter gripper left pocket on the clip and aboker hunters stockman on my right hip on my belt i carry a letherman ti. in its pouch i have a arc flashlight and a boyscout flint in the front right pocket i have aset of keys on them i have a fox 40 classic wissel and a magneium block with flint thats my every day carry :D

I guess 3 for me, a folder in my right pocket, a SAK climber in my back pocket for when the sheeple are around, and a SAK classic on my keychain.

Four is not uncommon for me. Sometimes it's hard to decide in the morning.

When my wife got me a suit for father's day a while back, she checked to make sure it had a lot of pockets so I could carry a lot of knives.

At MOST, I carry a folder in my pocket and a fixed blade on my belt. 90% of the time, it is just the folder... most likely a Strider SMF or Sebenza.

I don't really count the Leatherman as a knife, although it would make three.

If I'm in a situation where an SMF, a Leatherman, AND a fixed blade isn't enough... I'm pretty well screwed already.

I have 4, soon to be 5 knives that I EDC.

I have a Schrade CH8 cliphanger that clips to my belt loop and then hangs down into my pocket, then I have a CRKT Hammond A.B.C. that rides on my belt.
Then there is my Gerber multi tool that I got in '98 in a NiteIze Pock-Its flashlight and multi tool pouch, and my folding $5 utility knife.
My CRKT Carson F4 should be here tomorow :D

At work I carry a folder in my right rear pocket, and an AO in my left front pocket (since I am left hand stupid with knives)... and a small folder in my vest.... and sometimes a TDI under my gunbelt... and a tinker lodged under my magazine pouches (to remove license plates usually).... oh, and sometimes one in my shirt pocket (small sak for fingernail duty). So that is five to six... most with a distinct purpose, but I still feel like tackleberry now that I have typed this.
