Overkill...

i carry 2 sometimes more its eather my ritter gripper and my leatherman ti. or my lg skirmish and the leatherman. sometims when i go in the woods i carry a fixed blade as well i dont think of it as overkill i think of it as being prepared. when im in the woods ive carried my leatherman,lg ritter, srk, and a mora and thats not overkill atleast i dont think so

Right now I have four on me:
HAK Embassy Special
UHAKV2
CQC8
EBAC
I do not believe in overkill.

Four sounds about right:

1. One for general cutting purposes.

2. One used for nothing but cutting food such as fruit.

3. One cheapy to sacrifice to really harsh tasks and loan out.

4. One for self-defense. (unused to preserve the edge)

I carry many. To name a few, I carry around a straight razor or two, a few boot knives, some gloves with knife blades, concealed knives in my concealed shoulder pockets, various scalpels and sæxes, some combat knives, and some OTF switchblades. (That's only a few!) I also carry around some guns like .50 Desert Eagles and various shotguns.

This is a knife forum, for folks in the real world who use real knives -- primarilly as tools. Please return to the "online role playing" forum from whence you came.

I sometimes carry up to four knives:

Leatherman Charge XTi (or SwissTool Spirit)
Sebenza (rotated between large and small)
Kershaw Leek
Bud Nealy neck knife

I like to have all these knives with me and I will rotate the other knives I own just because like to give the other knives some pocket time.

BTW, did I mention how many flashlights I carry? It's three:D.

Typically I'll just have the one knife clipped to the RH pocket, but also:

Opinel #8 in my backpack (food knife, and if I ever had a really ugly task, this would be the one to sacrifice)

Paring knife in my lunchbag (for cutting up veggies, fruit, cheese and bread at supper).

Victorinox utilitycard in my dayplanner (includes a 1" blade). Would be useful for trimming a paper or opening an envelope in a business context.

Three, four, five, who knows. Is a 44 magnum overkill when a 22 long rifle (or a 22 magnum) will do the same job 90% of the time?

I used to always carry only a SAK and a folder (usually a tactical one). A few months ago, I started carrying a small fixed blade on my left side for a horizontal cross draw (that's now my "go to" knife in a pinch). I asked myself, "self? does this mean I don't need the folder anymore?" The answer I finally came to was "it depends". So, I usually still carry the folder even when I have the fixed blade. The fixed blade is always with me (in the house or out) so for a quick run to the store, I often don’t bother grabbing the folder. I will also sometimes throw on my Leatherman Wave. Is all this overkill? Maybe, but I like it that way. Being over prepared is better than not being prepared enough. You may only get one chance. Most self defense edged weapons experts recommend carrying 2 knives, in case you drop one. For daily tasks, one may need different type blades or use one until it’s dull then grab the other one. What's enough? Only you can decide for yourself.

A little story. When I bought my very first quality knife about 5 years ago (BM 710), there was a young (compared to me) Special Forces gentleman in the shop (in plain clothes) that just got back from Afghanistan. He was very nice and we got to talking. After a little while he produced his knives: one SAK and 2 BM 710's (black combo blades). One in his right front pocket, one left rear pocket. He could draw and deploy them both at the same time like lightening. About as fast as I can now draw my fixed blade. He said he had been studying Philippino edged weapons for years and I believed him. Was it overkill? Not to him. But then again, he had been highly trained and even been to war. At the time I thought it was overkill. But as the years have gone buy and I've also practiced edged weapons SD techniques, I now believe 2 knives are needed for self defense. And again, if the knives are just for just daily chores (to me that's a waste of something that could potentially save your life or someone you love), then someone may need different types of blades or need a backup if one gets dull (like a garage door repairman I know that carrys 3 on the job). Who knows a person’s reasons?

Again, it all depends. And again, you get to decide.

Regards

Ok, I'll play:

LM Core
Huntsman SAK
Spyderco Salt or Ritter Grip (depending on mood)

So, three. All three get used too, so I don't feel bad. All my stuff (flashlight, lighter, knives) just disappear in my trusty Carharts . . . .

I carry three "knives" all the time.
1) Leatherman micra, because I want real screwdrivers with square corners.
2) SAK classic because I like the rounded edge screwdriver to quickly get at for minor prying jobs.
3) A locking blade knife for cutting. Usually a BM Ascent in ATS 34 or Native III in VG10.
All cutting gets done with the main knife. The others are there for non-cutting jobs.

Nah.

<patting myself down...stand by>

Al Mar Osprey on my keys, Hide Away Knife in my cell phone case, Spyderco carbon fiber/ZDP Military in my left front pants pocket, Case trapper in my right thigh patch pocket.

Four's good :)

I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself there (ahead of Spyderco, too)! Perhaps you mean a carbon fiber/BG-42 Military?;)

Unfortunately for me I can't carry any knife at work. I work in a max. security prison so thats really frowned upon, not to mention a quick way to unemployment. Outside of work I like 2 with one in my vehicle, seatbelt cutter! Since in my state auto's are,... well lets just say they raise eyebrows. I carry a camillius lev-r-lok. Now someone tell me why that is legal and a traditional auto is not in this goofy state? (WI) Well thats my 2 cents.

Being over prepared is better than not being prepared enough. You may only get one chance... you get to decide.
I believe that says it all. I've read many, many newspaper articles from around the nation on how everyday people were saved from life-threatening crises, most often involving car seat belts, because they had a knife or a nearby, concerned person took the time to get involved and had a knife ready for the job. I've also heard accounts of people who weren't so lucky, due to lack of a knife.

Is there a ceiling on personal preparedness? I believe it's an individually-imposed limit. We all have a good idea of which tools we each need for life's everyday tasks and for those unforeseen events, as well. My own in-town comfort level favors carrying:

- a Benchmade 551 Griptilian D2
- a Leatherman Squirt P4 on my keychain
- a 2 2/3" bladed fixed blade in a jacket pocket.

In the wilderness, I carry:

- a Greco Explorer (9.5" fixed blade, 15" OAL)
- my Benchmade Griptilian
- a Leatherman Supertool 200

To each his own. I like to balance ease of carry with situational preparedness. If in doubt, life has taught me to err on the side of caution.

Around here anyone that carries just one or even two knives seems to be in the minority.

Oups! I carry one! I have more, but like to reduce it down on 1 and keep that as long as possible in edc.

Wow, my wishful thinking worked its way to my fingers on my keyboard :)

Hey, you gave me one heck of a wake up call! I went feverishly looking through my Spyderco catalogs for a sprint-run, ZDP/carbon fiber Military I thought I might have somehow missed.:D

Well I thought it was over-kill until I took an inventory of what I have most days.
- a credit card tool logic gizmo with a small fixed blade in my messenger bag
- an old folder I keep on my desk at work.
- a BM Stryker in my pocket.
- a small multi tool gizmo on my key-chain with a folding blade.

So I guess no it's not over-kill .... it's perfectly normal...:)

I usually carry 2 to 3 when I'm at home. A Strider fb or a Razel, an auto of some kind and another folder for general usage. At work is where I load down and it can be up to 6 knives. I've got knives for specific uses and a couple (bali and auto's) that I just like to manipulate when theres nothing to do.

I have been known to carry up to six knives. Not because I need them but because I can't make up my mind LMAO, But I always carry at least a large fixed blade and a tactical folder.

I truly EDC only one knife. I have a SAK around my neck all the time. When I'm not at work, I have two. I throw a custom fixed blade onto my belt. Sometimes I carry a second folder in my jacket pocket.
