Being over prepared is better than not being prepared enough. You may only get one chance... you get to decide.
I believe that says it all. I've read many, many newspaper articles from around the nation on how everyday people were saved from life-threatening crises, most often involving car seat belts, because they had a knife or a nearby, concerned person took the time to get involved and had a knife ready for the job. I've also heard accounts of people who weren't so lucky, due to lack of a knife.
Is there a ceiling on personal preparedness? I believe it's an individually-imposed limit. We all have a good idea of which tools we each need for life's everyday tasks and for those unforeseen events, as well. My own in-town comfort level favors carrying:
- a Benchmade 551 Griptilian D2
- a Leatherman Squirt P4 on my keychain
- a 2 2/3" bladed fixed blade in a jacket pocket.
In the wilderness, I carry:
- a Greco Explorer (9.5" fixed blade, 15" OAL)
- my Benchmade Griptilian
- a Leatherman Supertool 200
To each his own. I like to balance ease of carry with situational preparedness. If in doubt, life has taught me to err on the side of caution.
